Welcome to GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord....Then Jesus gave a loud cry & breathed his last Surely this was the Son of God. Selected verses from Mark 14 & 15 SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2018 Palm Sunday 205 S. Garner St., State College, PA 16801 phone: 814-238-2478 email: churchoffice@glcpa.org web address: w w w.glcpa.org 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. worship services Today s Hymns #ELW 344 #ELW 337 #ELW 434 Distribution #ELW 353 #ELW 462 #ELW 494 Our Mission Statement: Grace Lutheran Church is energized by the Holy Spirit and nurtured through God s Word and Sacrament to gather, feed, and send people in the name of J esus Christ.

HOW SWIFTLY THE MOOD CHANGES...for us this day! This is the day when, in times of old, people shouted praises and greetings, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" But, by sundown, already the shouts of "crucify" were being plotted. In the steady ride of the Christ, the faithfulness of God stands in stark contrast to the fickleness of God's children! So on this day, what begins as a shout of joy soon quiets into a sober contemplation of the awesome events that are already beginning to unfold - for our salvation! ABOUT TODAY S THEME The first and second readings and psalm are the same this Sunday every year: Christ emptying himself of divine power and protection, willingly becoming vulnerable to those who struck him and put him to death. With Christ we lament his suffering and all human suffering, but expect God s final vindication. Mark s passion story begins with an unnamed woman anointing his head, perhaps to proclaim him Messiah, and Jesus saying she has anointed him beforehand for burial. Mark s Easter story will begin with women going to anoint Jesus for burial, only to find that he has been raised, God s living Anointed One. A WORD ON THE READINGS The First Lesson: The image of the servant of the Lord is one of the notable motifs in the book of Isaiah. Today s reading describes the mission of the servant, whom early Christians associated with Jesus. Like Jesus, the servant does not strike back at his detractors but trusts in God s steadfast love. The Second Lesson: Christ did not act to attain status and glory but was obedient to God even to the point of death. Following Christ s example, we do not seek personal status or glory but care for others as God cared for us in Christ s death.. The Gospel Lesson: The passion story in Mark s gospel presents Jesus as one who dies abandoned by all. He shows himself to be the true Son of God by giving his life for those who have forsaken him. MOVING INTO THE DEATH AND TOWARD RESURRECTION...during Holy Week, the question about death should not be second-hand or academic for us. We cannot be satisfied to ask what it meant to Jesus, to Peter, to Paul, or to Luther. They are questions hungering for learned answers, to be sure. We must ask what death means for us in light of Holy Week and Easter. We are challenged to hear the stories well, searching out the new insights that will bring a true shout of joy and some confident changes in our lives...on Easter morning. He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! THE PASSION STORY...is today s Gospel lesson at all of our services. The congregation will be asked to be seated for this reading. And, except for a very brief commentary, this reading is our sermon for this day. TODAY AT 10 AM...Musical settings of Hosanna will be sung in the stairwell by our youth choir, Crossfire. Come into the stairwell at 10 to hear joyful strains of Hosanna to the Son of David by Marie Pooler, Michael Burkhardt, and others. 2

Now is the acceptable time, now is the day of salvation. May the grace of God, through Christ our salvation, be with you all. PRELUDE Sojourner Henry WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PROCESSIONAL WITH PALMS Sunday School students. The Palms (please see insert) PROCESSIONAL HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor.ELW #344 (stanzas 1-3 with refrains) Pastor: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Congregation: Hosanna to the Son of David! P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Mercifully assist us, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts whereby you have given us life everlasting; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Hosanna to the Son of David! P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew C: Glory to you, O Lord. (spoken) READING of the PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL.... Mark 11:1-11 1 When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, [Jesus] sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? just say this, The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately. 4 They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5 some of the bystanders said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9 Then those who went ahead and those 3

who followed were shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven! 11 Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give God thanks and praise. P: We praise and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph and was acclaimed the Son of David and King of kings by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path. We ask that you bless these branches and those who bear them and grant that we may ever hail him as our Lord and King and follow him with perfect confidence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Hosanna to the Son of David! PROCESSIONAL HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor ELW #344 (stanzas 4-5 with refrains) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray C: Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST LESSON.Isaiah 50:4 9a (pew Bible p. 594) 4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9a It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? SECOND LESSON....Philippians 2:5 11 (pew Bible p. 954) 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Hosanna.Laurel Sanders Sung by Tara Banerjee, Mardi McDonough, Laura Pauley, Laurel Sanders and Megan Widener; Anna Carol Buffington, handbells P: HOLY GOSPEL.... selected verses from Mark 14:1-15:47 C: Glory to you, O Lord. (spoken) Pastor Lynn very brief Palm Sunday commentary, then the Holy Gospel is read. You may be seated for the reading of the Passion of Jesus. C: Praise to you, O Christ. (spoken) SILENCE FOR REFLECTION 5

HYMN OF THE DAY Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed...ELW #337 APOSTLES CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Response after each petition: L: Lord, in your mercy C: Hear our prayer. WE SHARE THE LORD S PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. OFFERTORY Abide with Me arr. Jason Krug The Bells of Grace OFFERTORY SONG (ELW #182) C: Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing, Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer now. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. P: Holy God, gracious and merciful, you bring forth food from the earth and nourish your whole creation. Turn our hearts toward those who hunger in any way, that all may know your care; and prepare us now to feast on the bread of life, Jesus Christ, your only Son our Lord. C: Amen. 6

GREAT THANKSGIVING (ELW p. 161) P: C: P: C: P: P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: C: C: (ELW p. 162) 7

P: He was despised and rejected by others; (Isaiah 53:3) a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5) P: Let us pray with confidence in the words our Savior gave us: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. P: The gifts of God for the people of God. - Come, the meal is ready. C: Thanks be to God. COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION All are invited to join the congregation in receiving the Savior s Body and Blood. Children not yet receiving Communion are invited forward for a blessing. Rice wafers and grape juice are available for those who have sensitivities to wheat or alcohol. An acolyte has a special tray with these alternative communion elements. 8
