FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANTHONY. I hope you are in the swing of Lent by now, the Third Sunday of Lent. Probably all of us are at different stages. Are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving part of your life right now? How are you drawing closer to the Lord? Are you becoming more aware of the persons around you and their needs? As you abstain and fast, are you hungering more for God? Has God revealed anything to you when you pray? In my personal experience of Lent, I usually become somewhat uncomfortable because Lent helps us to look at ourselves honestly we like some things about ourselves, but probably not everything. So what can we do about it? Perhaps today s Opening Prayer can be our prayer all week long: O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness, who in fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, have shown us a remedy for sin, look graciously on this confession of our lowliness, that we, who are bowed down by our conscience, may always be lifted up by your mercy. Through Christ our Lord. On this Third Sunday of Lent we begin to celebrate the Scrutinies with our catechumen, Suzanne Dunn, who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. What is a Scrutiny? The Church teaches that [t]he Scrutinies, which are solemnly celebrated on Sundays and are reinforced by an exorcism, are rites for self-searching and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. For the scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life. These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all. The Scrutinies will be celebrated at the 11:00AM Mass today and the following two Sundays. Please pray for all those who are preparing to be baptized or received into the Church this Easter. Tomorrow we have a beautiful feast in the midst of Lent! We will celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, exactly nine months before we celebrate the Nativity of our Lord on December 25. The Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God. This is a great celebration of our Redemption, as we know why Jesus took on the flesh to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Meditate on the Prayer after Communion for tomorrow: Confirm in our minds the mysteries of the true faith, we pray, O Lord, so that, confessing that He who was conceived of the Virgin Mary is true God and true man, we may, through the saving power of His Resurrection, merit to attain eternal joy. Through Christ our Lord. We are making great progress in our Diocesan Lenten Appeal. As of Tuesday, March 19, we had received 57 gifts for a total of $36,740. We are at 76.05% of the diocesan goal. Thanks to all who have been so generous to the Diocese and to the parish. If you have not yet made your gift or commitment to the DLA, please consider doing so soon. May God bless you for your generosity. Have you given any thought to how you might like to participate here in our parish? We have need for readers, ushers, servers, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Please let me know if you would like to serve our parish in these capacities. I hope to meet with the various groups during the next several weeks. As Lent progresses, I hope that you will take the opportunity to confess your sins. We have a communal penance service here at Holy Trinity on Tuesday, April 16, at 7:00PM. Several priests will be present to help us be reconciled with God as we enter into the celebration of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. And of course, the Sacrament of Penance is celebrated on Saturday at 4:00PM. If you need to make an appointment for a different time, please call the parish office. MOST HOLY TRINITY, ONE GOD, HAVE MERCY ON US! DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL Open your heart to HOPE, the 2019 Diocesan Lenten Appeal, helps HOPE grow. Community Service will be preparing Easter food baskets for those in need on Palm Sunday, April 14 and we need your help. Community service will provide a complete Easter meal but we would like to provide these families with some additional non-perishable groceries during these difficult times. Some suggestions for non-perishable food items (but not limited to): canned soups and fruits, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni & cheese, cereal, Pop Tarts, cereal bars, pancake mix & syrup, pasta sauce, cookie, brownie or cake mix, bagged snacks (chips, pretzels, etc.) To ensure the safety of our recipients, please check the expiration dates on your donated food.
