The Season of Lent is often a time where people give up habits, practices, or mindsets. This season, we follow Jesus journey to the cross by looking at what Jesus and his followers also give up along the way. The banners in the sanctuary mirror that journey. Each week, we will remove a panel of color on the journey to the cross during our Litany for Lent. THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT March 31, 2019 Fort Street Presbyterian Church 631 W. SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY March 31, 2019 GOD GATHERS US TOGETHER TO WORSHIP PRELUDE O Sacred Head, Surrounded Johannes Brahms WELCOME OPENING SENTENCES Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, God s love is poured into our hearts. PRAYER OF THE DAY Gracious God, in order that the children of earth might discern good from evil you sent your Son to be the light of the world. As Christ shines upon us, may we learn what pleases you, and live in all truth and goodness through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. * HYMN 490 Wash, O God, Your Sons and Daughters BEACH SPRING * PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy One, the space between us is too great this agonizing expanse between you and us: The rift we have created by demanding our share. The distance we have put between us as we flee to a far country. The resentment we hold when things don t seem fair. Our refusal to join your gracious party. Forgive each selfish request each step away each bitter thought each joyless rejection. Forgive us, and run toward us with open arms. Amen. * DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Listen, so that you may live: the steadfast love of the Lord never fails. Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel: 2

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen. RESPONSE SONG 623 I ve Got Peace Like a River PEACE LIKE A RIVER * SHARING OF CHRIST S PEACE Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we too should forgive one another. Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Exchange signs of Christ s peace with those worshipping with you.) SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR LUNA HOCKING I believe God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED LESSON ONE 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 (p.644-645 in Pew Bibles) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Fairest Lord Jesus Calvin Hampton LESSON TWO Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 (p. 71 in Pew Bibles) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON My Cup Overflows Rev. Anne Lange 3

* HYMN Don t Be Weary, Traveller SLAVE SONG 98 LITANY FOR LENT A colored panel is removed from the banner behind the pulpit and placed upon the cross. Most journeys add color to our lives, In new memories, friends, and experiences. But there are other kinds of journeys That make our life less colorful. We have to lower our expectations, say goodbye Or discover hard truths about ourselves. Lamb of God, have mercy on us. The journey of Lent is one of loss. As we get closer to Jerusalem, More and more is taken away. Lamb of God, have mercy on us. ANNOUNCEMENTS WE RESPOND TO THE WORD SHARING CELEBRATIONS AND CONCERNS Microphone Available PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. 4
