The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh Readings for the week of JANUARY 27, 2019 First Reading Rejoicing in the L must be your strength (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Second Reading In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12:12-30 [12-14, 27]). Gospel The Spirit of the Lord has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21). A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory. 1saiah 62:2 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Heb 5:1-10; Ps 110:1-4; Mk 2:18-22 Tuesday: Heb 6:10-20; Ps 111:1-2, 4-5, 9, 10c; Mk 2:23-28, or any of a number of readings for the Day of Prayer Wednesday: Heb 7:1-3, 15-17; Ps 110:1-4; Mk 3:1-6 Thursday: Heb 7:25 8:6; Ps 40:7-10, 17; Mk 3:7-12 Friday: Acts 22:3-16 or 9:1-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Mk 16:15-18 Saturday: 2 Tm 1:1-8 or Ti 1:1-5; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9 or Ps 96:1-3, 7-8a, 10; Mk 3:20-21 Sunday: Neh 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10; Ps 19:8-10, 15; 1 Cor 12:12-30 [12-14, 27]; Lk 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Page Five To Each Individual the Manifestation of the Spirit Is Given for Some Benefit Last weekend, as we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, we also had an opportunity to reflect on our own Baptism. Through Baptism we are washed clean of Original Sin and enter into the life of grace through the gift of the Holy Spirit. And it doesn t end there! In Confirmation we receive the fullness of God s Spirit and are sent forth into the world as instruments of his life and love. Yet, while we are united in the Spirit of God as his children, we are not robots who all speak the same words or who do identical deeds in God s name. Instead, as Saint Paul reminds us in today s second reading, each one of us shared uniquely in the gifts of the Spirit so that we might fulfill God s unique will for us. The journey of our life of faith must then include discerning the gifts that God has given us and how he wants us to use them. This is an important part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative. If each one of us has been endowed with spiritual gifts in what ways can we use them to enliven the Church? Spend a few moments in prayer this week and ask the Lord to help you know the gifts the Spirit has bestowed upon you and how you are being called to share them. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. ST. SYLVESTER MEN S RETREAT 2019 APRIL 12 APRIL 14 ST. PAUL OF THE CROSS RETREAT CENTER THEME: I HAVE CHOSEN YOU! Relax! Renew! The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh THE DEACON S CORNER A lady was overheard telling her friend, my husband and I had a big argument and we ended up not talking to one another for three days. Finally, on the third day he asked where one of his shirts was, I said So, now you re talking to me. He looked confused and asked, What are you talking about? I said, haven t you noticed I haven t spoken to you for three days? He said: No, I just thought we were getting along (from Reader Digest). Such is the joy and complexity of earthy love. But it is not the love that Paul tells us about in 1st Corinthians 12 & 13. This famous description of Love, often used at weddings, is one of Paul s most beautiful passages. It will be one of our Sunday readings on the 3rd of February. This describes an unselfish and self-sacrificing love. This describes an agape kind of love, God s love. This is the love we find in the Eucharist which comes from the cross and Jesus self-sacrificing love for us. This is not an easy love. It does not happen easily or without effort. It demands discipline and selflessness. This is the love we are always called to strive for a love for which Christ is the perfect example of. Our Mass helps us to abide in this love. It is a love for the benefit of another. Share this kind of love with your family. ~Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent Page Seven Since this is the Anniversary of this column, I thought that I would feature the first review that I put into our bulletin. Do you Believe? is a 2015 Christian film with an allstar cast, some of whom may surprise you. As is says on the DVD package, When a local pastor is shaken to the core by the visible faith of an old street corner preacher, he is remined that true belief always requires action. His response ignites a faith-fueled journey that powerfully impacts everyone it touches in ways that only God can orchestrate More than a movie, it is a question that we all must answer DO YOU BELIEVE? I score this movie 4 1/2 Beards out of 5 Beards. It is rated PG-13, as it may a little too intense for young children, but no more intense than any recent Star Wars film. At the very least, if you watch this movie, it will make you re-think your commitment to your Faith. More than likely, it will make a change in your life. ~Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts...forever! St. Sylvester Catholic School Where All The Pieces Come Together!
