ST. CATHARINE S PARISH 523 Western Highway Blauvelt, New York 10913 Rev. Msgr. Francis J. McAree, S.T.D. Pastor

SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2019 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this coming Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year Feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and clear the air by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 29, and Yom Kippur October 8. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your Lent. TODAY S READINGS First Reading One s speech shows the bent of one s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks (Sirach 27:4-7). Psalm Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92). Second Reading We are given victory over death through Jesus. In the Lord our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:54-59). Gospel A good person produces good, an evil person produces evil. The mouth speaks from the goodness of the heart (Luke 6:39-45). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. THE 2019 CARDINAL S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL THIS IS COMMITMENT WEEKEND "You are the light of the world. Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify our Heavenly Father. Matthew 5:14-1. We are often reminded by Sacred Scripture that in order to love one another, we must share the blessings which God has provided to us. As Catholics, we are called to serve our neighbors with compassion and humility. This is Commitment Weekend. At all of our Masses, you will have an opportunity to make your commitment to The Appeal. We are asking every family to participate and make a sacrificial pledge to the 2019 Cardinal s Annual Stewardship Appeal. The success helping those less fortunate, spiritually nurturing our youth, caring for our retired priests and religious, growing the many ministry programs that serve our communities depends on us. Please join your fellow parishioners, prayerfully consider your contribution, and make your gift to the Cardinal s Appeal today. Remember, you can pledge your gift now, and make payments in the coming months. You may also choose to make your donation online at www.cardinalsappeal.org. +ASH WEDNESDAY+ MARCH 6 th Ashes will be distributed at the following times 6:45 AM MASS 8:30 AM MASS 12:10 PM MASS 5:00 PM ASHES IN CHURCH FOR PREP STUDENTS 7:30 PM MASS + PARISH LENTEN ACTIVITIES + Daily Mass Monday Friday 6:45 & 8:30 AM Saturday Mass 8:30 AM Eucharistic Adoration Every Friday morning from 9:00 11:00 AM Stations of the Cross Every Friday evening at 7:30 PM Confessions Every Saturday from 4:00 4:45 PM Reconciliation Monday, April 15 th Individual confessions 4:00 7:00 PM DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS NEXT WEEK! SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2019 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NEXT WEEK S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES Next week, our Parish will take up a collection for Catholic Relief Services. This collection supports six Catholic agencies that work to provide services including advocating for immigrants, providing humanitarian aid in the wake of natural disasters, resettling displaced individuals, and working for increased peace. Your compassionate caring can make all the difference in our world. LENTEN REGULATIONS ON FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Lent is the penitential time of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and personal sacrifice meant to draw Christians more deeply into the sacred mystery of the Lord s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. During Lent, the Church calls the faithful to bring a spirit of penance into their lives through fasting and abstinence. The following fasting and abstinence regulations are to be observed: Abstinence from eating meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age, but not yet 59 years of age. Those bound by fasting may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Those who are not specifically obliged to fast or to abstain are encouraged to join in those disciplines to the extent they are able. The season of Lent culminates in the celebration of the Easter Triduum of the Lord s Last Supper, Passion, Death and Resurrection. Holy Thursday this year is April 18 th. Good Friday is April 19 th. The Easter Vigil of the Lord s Resurrection is April 20 th. Easter Sunday is April 21 st. ALMSGIVING DURING LENT POOR BOX DONATIONS Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Pope Francis During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on almsgiving, which means donating money or goods, and performing other acts of charity. Please consider dropping a few coins into the Poor Box on your way into or out of Church each week. BIBLE STUDY BEGINS THIS TUESDAY, MARCH 5 th, 7:30 PM Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity to do something special during the coming season of Lent. Bible Study meets every Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM in the Lower Parish House. For more information, please contact Mrs. Anna Stellwag at (845) 359-0769. dear Padre Why is Ash Wednesday so important? Ash Wednesday is unique because it signals the beginning of Lent, the Church s special time of confession and renewal in preparation for Easter. It is what Christians are all about. The symbols of Ash Wednesday touch us in a powerful way. When we hear the words, Remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return, we are reminded of our vulnerability and utter dependence on God. We all know in our hearts that the cross of Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation. We also know how difficult it is to internalize this truth, to pick up the cross daily and live it in all of life s circumstances. We know we need more prayer and discipline in our life, more genuine concern for others and less self-centeredness, more involvement in church and community. So, we get our ashes, and turn back to the Lord. People wear the cross of ashes on their foreheads without embarrassment or shame. It s like a badge of identification, reminding Catholics that we need to go back to being who we are supposed to be, fully and totally Christian. It is as if Catholics are saying, I m Catholic and proud of it. I may not be the best or greatest. I may slack off a little on my church attendance and commitments. I have my faults and sins. But I m not a bad person. I know deep down that being Christian is the way to live and I m going to try again. And, now is the perfect time. +EUCHARISTIC ADORATION DURING LENT+ EVERY FRIDAY, 9 AM TO 11 AM Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration every Friday morning throughout the remainder of Lent, following the 8:30 AM Mass, and concluding at 11:00 AM with Benediction. Please do your best to spend some quiet, quality time with Our Lord during this Holy Season. +STATIONS OF THE CROSS DURING LENT+ EVERY FRIDAY EVENING AT 7:30 PM One of our most traditional and beautiful Lenten practices is praying the Stations of the Cross. Why not make Friday evenings one of your special Lenten observances by joining us at 7:30 PM for Stations of the Cross. MAGNIFICAT LENTEN COMPANION Please be sure to pick up a copy of the Magnificat Lenten Companion from one of the Ushers tables in the lobby of the Church. This lovely little booklet, our gift to you, provides a series of original reflections to guide you through every day of Lent. By spending a few moments meditating on the inspiring daily reflections and the short prayers that follow them, you will discover all that is true, good, and beautiful about the Catholic faith.

SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2019 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WE THANK OUR ELDERLY PARISHIONERS We would like to take a moment to thank and honor our elderly Parishioners for sharing with us the wisdom of their experiences of life and of God. We thank all the elderly who faithfully come to Church, no matter what the weather, or how you feel, or how far it is to get here, or what it takes to get here, and at the same time being so generous in your contributions to our Church. We are always amazed how so many of you, in spite of physical pain and loneliness, remain sweet, just as the Psalm says, in their old age still full of sap still green (Psalm 92:14). Your prayers, your pain, your sacrifices contribute so much to the well-being of our Parish. You are role models to all of us. May God always bless you as you have blessed us by your faith and presence at St. Catharine s Church. Take My Hand, O Blessed Mother Take my hand, O Blessed Mother hold me firmly lest I fall. I grow nervous while I m walking humbly on thee do I call. Guide me over every crossing watch me when I m on the stairs. Let me know that you re beside me listen to my fervent prayers. Bring me to my destination keep me safely along the way. Bless my every undertaking and my duties for the day. And when evening creeps upon me I ll never fear to be alone. Once again, O Blessed Mother take my hand and lead me home.
