Knights of Columbus Arkansas State Council STATE DEPUTY COMMENTS CHARLES KETTER Brothers we have just completed a great organizational meeting on beautiful Mount Magazine. Many participants agreed this was a good way to start the Fraternal Year. I want to thank everyone who gave of their time to present the program and especially the District Deputies who will take this back to their districts and put this in place. You will be dealing with the Membership Director Jimmy McKinnon with all of the council s membership questions. His e-mail is jimmymckinnon@sbcglobal.net. He is very knowledgeable about everything membership, including suspensions. His charge from supreme and me is to get every council to recruit one member per month. This is a small expectation for each council. This year we will be contacting Philip Savage for all programs. Philip s e-mail is philipsavage@hotmail.com. There are six programs Church, Community, Family, Youth, Pro-life and Council and there are ways to win Star Council of the Year that have not been available before. Your District Deputy will be holding his district meeting soon. Be sure your council is represented. One of the best and most needed programs is RSVP. If you have not as of yet sent in the $200 request we have made for the Taste of Faith in Little Rock and Springdale please consider it

now. Please consider inviting your seminarian to your council or parish to visit and meet your members and parishioners. This is a great way to let your Brothers see what a worthy cause we support. Also, it just might spark a vocation in your parish. Brothers keep up the good work supporting our priests and religious. I would like to take a moment to thank each and every Knight and his family who prayed for me during my surgery and recovery. I am healing and getting stronger every day. Just know that so many gathered in prayer made this an easy time in my life. Also, thank-you for all the thoughts and prayers offered during the loss of my brother Pete. It is great being a part of the communion of saints. You, my Brother Knights are living the command from the gospel I am My Brother s Keeper. Vivat Jesu Charles Ketter State Deputy April 29, 2011 ARKANSAS STATE COUNCIL MICHAEL L. KIEFFER, STATE SECRETARY Worthy State Chaplain, Worthy Supreme Director, Worthy State Officers, and Brother Knights, The Credentials Committee met on April 29, 2011 and reviewed the delegate credentials and Per Capita Payments. The committee found the list of credentialed delegates to be in order. Charles Fields Richard Donohue Tommy Daughtenbaugh Michael L. HOT SPRINGS Local Knights of Columbus Council 06419 wins the first annual Arkansas Knights of Columbus Cup recently held at the Belvedere Golf Course in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The local Knights played under the skillful leadership of team captain Fred Blais and co-captain Hans Purkott. The participating Hot Springs golfers included Frank Janeskie, Greg Speas, Larry Martin, Steve Libby, Dough Shackleford, Joe Dierks, Randy Schnoebelen, Mark Layton, David Meyers, and Joe Harrison. Teams competing included the following: Searcy, Council 11294, El Dorado, Council 05099, Morrilton, Council 05209, Hot Springs Village, Council 10208 and Hot Springs, Council 06419. The competition s format was 3 x 9 holes match play, scoring was 0 points for the loss of the match, 1 point for a draw, 2 points for a win, and 3 point for a win by 2 or more holes. Hot Springs Village won second place, Morrilton came in third and the teams from El Dorado and Searcy tied at fourth. This enjoyable event has set up the potential grudge match for next year. The Hot Spring s Knights of Columbus Council 06419 is affiliated with the international Knights of Columbus that includes more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the world. Their activities encompass an almost infinite variety of charitable projects. Please mark your calendar for the annual, giant Rummage Sale to be held on October 14 & 15 and again on October 21 & 22, 2011 at the 3045 East Spring Street, Hot Springs, Arkansas. All proceeds benefit local charities. I asked the Council to help and had a great turn out on a Saturday with 100 degree heat. Members of Pius XII Council 00996 Fort Smith AR, members participating included: Jason Morland, Daniel Moore, State Advocate Mike Heathcott, Gary Barker, Gilbert Koch, Mark Giuliani, Robert Collins, Chris Brown, Roger Donald, and Patrick Giuliani who is still too young to become a member but gave up his Saturday morning to help. Thanks to all. Page 3

Robert Collins Grand Knight Council 00996 CAMPAIGN FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES JOHN BODENSTEINER Since the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities (CPID) is one of the first significant charitable events for councils each fraternal year, it is important to get started early with the planning and scheduling for it. I have sent an email to all district deputies, grand knights, program directors, and financial secretaries with addresses urging the involvement of all councils this year. Included were suggestions for fund raising activities as well as order forms for CPID aprons and tootsie rolls. Our goal for 2011 is to increase by 50% both the number of participating councils and the amount of funds raised for the intellectually disabled in Arkansas. Reference the fund raising history since its inception in 1975. The range is $41,483 to $90,256.26 with an average of $66,732 for the 29 years for which there is information. Although there was an increase of 30% from 2009 to 2010, we still did not attain the average for the previous 28 years. The need is great. We can do better! I have been trying desperately to locate information for the missing seven years. If anyone has the data or can suggest someone who may, please contact me at jbodie@suddenlink.net. As Knights, we should expect nothing less. It all begins with prayer. We are encouraged to pray daily, for Respect for Life from conception until natural death; for The Unborn; for Mothers and their babies; for those who work in the abortion industry; for our Government Officials, and their conversion to Pro-Life; and this list goes on. But as Pro-Life supporters we are encouraged to be Pro-Active in other ways. Are we stepping out of our comfort zone, where we pray with others who are Pro-Life or, discuss Pro- Life with others who share our belief? Or, are we being Pro-Active and making our voice be Page 5

heard outside of our comfort zone? Jesus didn t send His disciples to talk with each other about Him. He sent them out into the world to the end of the earth. Have we prayed at the Planned Parenthood facility with other Pro-Life prayer warriors? Have we written, called or emailed our public officials, The President, Congress Representatives, Senators, etc.? Have we taken advantage of the many Pro-Life email opportunities to send an email in support of Pro-Life. Have we gone online to our Knights of Columbus Supreme website at www.kofc.org and clicked on Public Policy Issues? Have we gone to the Diocese of Little Rock website www.dolr.org and read Life News on a regular basis? Life News contains a wealth of information about Pro-Life and many of the ways that we can be involved or, should not be involved. For instance in the May 2011 issue, the first article on page 1 Know Whom you are supporting, is a must read for all who are Pro-Life. Please read this article today. It will take less than a minute, but may change which causes that you support. The Supreme website www.kofc.org Public Policy Issues will take you to Culture of Life or, Legislative Action. Both pages are loaded with important Pro-Life information. Culture of Life page includes a link to Recommended Pro-Life websites where you will find several organizations with Pro-life action capabilities, such as petitions which you can sign and submit with ease. This can be done from the comfort of home and takes only a minute, or less. Of course, as Knights of Columbus, we have a number of Pro-Life programs that we conduct each year within our Parishes and within the State, i.e. March for Life, The Running of the Silver Rose, the Baby Bottle Campaign, and a number of others. We encourage you and your Councils to be Pro-Life, be Pro-active and get involved with these programs. Vivat Jesu! Membership recruitment is one of the most relevant aspects of the Knights of Columbus. Membership growth and the Knight s Programs are important to each Council and ties very closely together. Without Membership promotions and growth we could not achieve our programs. Without Programs including Church we would not need to grow in membership. Our fraternal year starts July 1, 2011. Our goal for Arkansas this fraternal year is 400 new knights. Page 7

Each Knights of Columbus Council needs to continue recruiting new men into the Knights of Columbus. Let s look close at promoting membership this year to increase our members for us and our local Councils in order that we can do more things for the Church and for our different Programs in the State. We have eleven months to achieve our membership quota for this year. Membership recruitment is going out and asking eligible men to join the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS in Arkansas. Our theme is one knight, per month, per council. That is an achievable goal. If you look at conducting a first degree or going to another Council for a first degree, and if you bring one knight, per month then we will achieve our goals. You can achieve those goals!! One of the most relevant aspect and reason is to continue the leadership of promoting our programs for its communities in the State of Arkansas. Good luck this year and with a positive attitude about our membership and programs we will succeed. Please contact me and we will work on the development of the membership program for this year. Jimmy McKinnon, PSD Membership Director Grand Knights: Worthy Grand Knights: VIRTUS TRAINING DISTRICT 06 A message from GK Mario Echevarria, Council 06834; please communicate our local Virtus training schedule to your members at your earliest convenience. Schedule is listed below. Page 8

For those of you, who have not taken a Virtus course, please consider attending one of the scheduled courses listed below. Certification in this course is mandatory according to our diocese if you are working with youth in our parish. As a member in the Knights of Columbus you will be around our youth at various functions, so being Virtus trained will be required. This is a well-planned curriculum with excellent content relevant to today. I encourage all members of the council to become Virtus trained as quickly as possible. Yes Meg Higson Liturgy and Worship Commission 479-899-7119 My Brother Knights, There is so much to be thankful for: VOCATIONS CHAIRMAN PETER MCNULTY We have three (3) new Deacons, soon (2012) to be ordained to the Priesthood. Three young Priests to serve God and all of us at the Altar, to bring us the Eucharist and all the other sacraments. Page 10

Our Diocese through the continuous efforts of Msgr. Friend, Msgr. O Donnell, and Father Erik Pohlmeier, we have seminarians under study (at present) that will provide new priests through 2019 The June 18th edition of the Arkansas Catholic contained the annual Vocations special report. The information contained in this issue is enlightening as to the many aspects of vocations, both to the religious life and to the lay families. The importance of prayer for the growth of those called to the service of God is stressed. We Knights of Columbus have had for many years, a Prayer for Vocations and a Prayer to know ones Vocation card produced by the Supreme Council. A few years back, one of our State Deputies had cards produced locally to give to each Knight. I am sure that these prayers may have been the inspiration to more than one candidate to the religious life. In the newspaper, on page 14, Father Erik Pohlmeier has another Prayer for Vocations that can raise the awareness of all to the spirit and source of vocations. Msgr. Friend, very aptly points out: the Journey to Priesthood is not a cake-walk. We have seen, over the years, some men leave the seminary. Some find that it is not really their calling and some are not meant to be a priest, When we see a young man come before the Bishop and finally pledge obedience to him, that moment is the final step in the Journey The priest never stops learning, he has to grow in his priesthood in order to deal with the various and many requests from his parishioners. He must also be ready to follow the Bishop s assignments, whatever and wherever it may be Three parishes in the Diocese of Little Rock have Vocation Prayer Groups, Perhaps, after reading this year s Vocation Edition, more groups will spring up. A daily prayer could be as simple as Heavenly Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit guide, encourage, and support each seminarian to the fruition of his calling. Please note the Knights of Columbus input on page 12. It says a great deal about our Seminarian Support. God bless you all and your families God bless America and all our service men and women who keep us FREE. Page 11

Vivat Jesu! Peter McNulty FATHER MCGIVNEY GUILD R. S. BOB PETERS, JR., PSD, FVSM FATHER MICHAEL J. MCGIVNEY GUILD CHAIRMAN The Roman process of investigation into his life and holiness is nearing completion, and the investigation into a reported miracle is progressing. The Guild plays an important role in making Father McGivney better known and spreading the word about his powerful intercession. Again I am pleading with each of you to join the Father Michael J. McGivney Guild, it is painless, free and it will help in the cause of Sainthood for Father McGivney. As a member of the Guild you will receive updates, miracles etc., on the progress to Sainthood. At present we only have about 10% (619) of our membership participating in the Guild, this is a very sad situation; we need to get our numbers way up. Get on your computer, right now, and go www.fathermcgivney.org to make your presence known, it is important, do it now. Thanks for participating and joining the Guild.
