A Word From Pastor Caroline June / July 2018 As the Body of Christ we are called and sent to love and serve the world During the Easter season, I preached a sermon entitled What do you want to be when you grow up? In that message, I acknowledged how odd that may sound especially if you are at least as old as I am. It isn t usually something asked of people who ve worked more years than remain between themselves and Medicare. But 1 John 3:2 says we are God s children now, but what we will be has not yet been revealed. In other words, regardless of our age, we are still in process. As long as we are breathing in God s Holy Spirit, we are still being and becoming in the kingdom of God. This applies to us individually, but it also applies to us as a community of faith. As we celebrate 50 years of ministry as Christ the King Lutheran Church, this is a good time to remember that, as 1 John says, We are God s children now. What we will be has not yet been revealed. Therefore, at the grand old age of 50 or at the young age of 50 (depending on whether you re looking at it from above or below) we are still in process, too. As a community of faith, we are still breathing in God s Holy Spirit. We are still being and becoming who we are intended to be in the kingdom of God. What is God doing and how can we be part of it together? Or in the language of this particular message, As Christ the King Lutheran Church, who do we want to be when we grow up? Certainly the answer to this question has yet to be revealed; however, a process for exploring it has come to light. In cooperation with the Church Council and a team assembled for just this purpose, Christ the King has been accepted into a program initiated by the Center for Congregations. After a period of listening to you, the people of Christ the King, and to people in the surrounding community, we have the opportunity to apply for a Community Ministry Grant. Here are a few more specifics from the assembled team: Have you heard the good news? Christ the King has been accepted into the Center for Congregations s Community Ministry Grant (CMG) program. We are one of 30 congregations of various Christian denominations throughout the state of Indiana that has been awarded this opportunity. The goal of the program is to create a mutual ministry within our community over the next couple years. Something brand new that we have never done before!
2 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church A Word From Pastor Caroline And The CMG Team (continued) When you hear mutual ministry, think of three words: Relationships, Asset-based and Collaboration. 1. Mutual ministries are relational. These ministries allow for friendships to be formed and will create a ministry to be done with people, not for people. 2. Mutual ministries are asset-based. CtK will look at the passions and gifts of the individuals of our congregation, assets of our congregation as a whole and assets of our community to create a ministry that combines these three asset areas together. 3. Mutual ministries are collaborative. The Center for Congregations explains, They involve congregants, community members, and those they wish to serve, working together to create and build a program to serve a chosen group. Right now, we are at the stage where God only knows where we are going. We don t know yet. What we do know is over the upcoming months, you will hear a lot about Mutual Ministry, but even more importantly, you will be listened to by our CMG team. Serving on our team are Marie Blunt (project director), Pastor Caroline, Pastor Brad, Jill Harms, Bill Montgomery, Tom Jordan, and Mallory Weinhold. The team feels blessed that a lot of work has already been done through several missional discernment processes in the past. We will use this work as a stepping stone and add to it as we forge ahead. This is a natural next step in our missional journey. INTO was meant to prepare us to GO OUT! It all started a long time ago with tongues of flames and it continues. So, stay tuned as this process develops and start thinking about passions and gifts God has blessed you with that you can bring to this endeavor. Thank you from your CMG Team! What is God doing and how can we be part of it together? Let s keep talking and keep praying. God, put us in the path of what you are doing in this world. Show us what you are working. Thanks to the generosity of JCPenney, we are able to purchase new winter coats for $12.80 each. If you would like to purchase a winter coat for a child, take a tag from the narthex throughout the month of July and include that with a check with AB&B written in the check memo.
The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 5 Spotlight on Missions A BACKPACK & BEYOND Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 11, the date of the second annual A Backpack and Beyond (AB&B); a program CtK partners with Clay Church, St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church and Sunnyside Presbyterian Church to serve hundreds of children in the South Bend area. For those not familiar with this program, it is a fulfilling day where low-income children can bring their families to receive: 1) a new backpack; 2) a new winter coat; 3) new tennis shoes & socks; 4) school supplies; 5) hats and mittens; and 6) underwear. In addition, children will have the opportunity to receive a free haircut, vision exam and 2017 Photo dental exam on site the day of the event. Also, (as a prerequisite) after checking in but prior to receiving the gifts listed above, parents will be required to talk to a number of social service agencies. (It is our hope this will connect the parents with local services that can help their families.) The idea of AB&B came from Suzanne Wyatt of Clay church. She had seen a similar program in Indianapolis and the Holy Spirit kept pushing her to replicate it in our area. Through perseverance, an outgoing personality, and unrelenting drive, Suzanne created a team, got partnerships with churches and local businesses, and made the idea come to life. Suzanne explains, The Lord just kept nudging me. For example, I was walking out of a movie theater and started talking to a man who happened to be a barber. I looked at him and said, have I got a program for you and then we had free haircuts. I was in JCPenney one day and asked to speak with a manager. As I told her about the program, she got just as excited about it as I was. JCPenney now provides all winter coats, tennis shoes and school supplies at cost, as well as donates the backpacks. They also provide a team of warriors to help set-up on Friday and fit children in the coats and shoes on Saturday. Last year over 50 CtK congregants volunteered at AB&B. Everyone working felt they got more joy from volunteering than the actual families receiving the gifts. This year volunteers are needed on Friday, August 10 to help set up, as well as on Saturday. Please look in the narthex for sign-up sheets, starting mid-june. We will be collecting socks throughout June for AB&B and in July, you may purchase winter coats for $12.80. Come and listen to Suzanne as our Missional 2017 Photo Speaker on Sunday, June 24 from 10:30-11 in 504 as well as watch her accept a $2,000 Big Check from the Mission Grant Fund at one of the services. A special thanks to JCPenney, Boling Vision (who will be doing eye exams and providing glasses to those who need them), Solomon Merrill of The Blue Line Barber Shop, and Kona Ice (for providing snow cones for families and volunteers). 6 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church Laser tag meets Capture the Flag with Flour Bombs YO! 6th thru 12th Graders Bring a Friend! June 3rd FLOUR BOUTS IS COMING! June 3 Grab all your friends (rising 6 th Graders and up) and head to CtK for this fun outdoor event! Flour Bouts is a highenergy cross-over game of Capture the Flag meets Laser Tag using bombs made out of flour wrapped in tissue. Use the bombs to tag your opponent and eliminate them from the game. On June 3 at 3:00 pm we will play multiple rounds and then have a cookout. The event will even feature a round of ADULTS vs. YOUTH! Make sure you wear old clothes and sturdy shoes you can run in. The staff of CtK, council and the 50th anniversary planning committee say Thank You to Kristen Workman, CtK member and graphic designer for sharing her talent with us in designing the new CtK logo. CTK S 50TH ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE WANTS YOUR HANDPRINT The CtK 50th Anniversary committee is asking for your help in creating a new banner for our September 9, 2018 celebration church services. The God's Work, Our Hands banner will be displayed above the altar starting September 9th. We are asking EVERY CtK member to trace their one handprint (either left or right) onto a piece of cotton using the fabric and black sharpie markers available in the narthex. On the single handprint we ask that you print your name (first, last) on the first line, the month and year (i.e. May 2008) you joined CtK (or were baptized) on the second line. Fingers will be pointing down on the banner. Samples will be displayed on the table through mid-august, as we collect (hopefully) HUNDREDS of handprints for the new banner. We want baby hands, children's hands, teenager hands, mom and dad hands, adult hands, grandparent hands everyone's hand!! We will also be needing volunteers to help cut out the handprints for placement on the banner. The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 7 SUNBEAM CORNER Jamaica, June 7-15 Once again a team of seven will soon be on their way to the Sunbeam Children s Home in Jamaica. While at the home, the team will be very busy. Between helping with the three daily meals, they will also lead a daily devotional with the boys where they sing, entertain through skits and puppets, and share the message of Christ. Throughout the day, they will also play games and do crafts with the boys as well as work on making repairs and improvements to the facility. They will then end each night with a team devotional. In addition, the Jamaica team will take a one day pilgrimage to Kingston and visit three different homes: a home for the severely mentally disabled, a home for the elderly and a children s orphanage. While visiting these homes, they will sing songs and share the good word of Christ. The team is to arrive at the Home on Thursday, June 7. They will leave the following Thursday for a night in Kingston. Here, the team leaders will use this last night on the island as a transitional time, doing exercises to help everyone process what they have gone through over the past week. The CtK team in Jamaica this year includes Andy Trundle, Chuck Trundle, Sally Dixon, Audrey Dixon and Don Zerfas along with two first-timers, Mariah Trench and Gary Moore. RUMMAGE SALE THANK YOU Thank you to the many people who volunteered their time to the 2018 rummage sale. Their efforts worked to once again make it a big success and a wonderful outreach to the community. The sale netted approximately $10,000 this year! Thanks be to God.

We want to thank CtK for all of their amazing support through this winter and spring as we have been preparing for these trips, and we look forward to sharing about our experiences when we return! Baptism Asher Thomas Heasley was welcomed into the Church through Holy Baptism on May 6 at the 9:30 am service. Asher s parents are Emily & Jeff Heasley. Wedding We rejoice in the marriage of Brandon Nadolny and Sarah Hampel who were married at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on April 28 with Pastor Loren Van Oort officiating. Brandon s parents are James & Nancy Nadolny. New Members Jana Dahmen was welcomed as a new member on May 27 at the 9:30 am service. She lived in LaCrosse, WI and Gilbert, AZ before she moved to Granger in August, 2017. She enjoys hiking, kayaking, exercise, reading, woodcarving and micro-brewery beer. She came to CtK based on the internet and friends. Jana likes hugs and hugging people. Dave, Amy, Delayna and Andrew Hockenhull were welcomed as new members on May 20 at the 11:15 am service. They moved to South Bend in 2006 from the Detroit area. They love to have campfires and hang out with friends. Amy loves to read, Dave likes to experiment with smoking different cuts of meats and seasonings, Delayna loves to draw and Andrew does Taekwondo. Dave & Amy met in 1995 at ages 21 and 18. Amy was confirmed Lutheran prior to their wedding and they have continued their Lutheran faith ever since. They were invited to CtK by Jon & Kathy Thornton, their best friends. Jeff & Kathy Bernel were welcomed as new members on April 29 at the 8:15 am service. They moved to the area from LaPorte in October 2017. Jeff and Kathy enjoy traveling; Jeff enjoys motorcycle touring and Kathy plays violin and tennis. They found CtK to be very welcoming and they look forward to exploring various ministries.

The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 11 WHERE THE HOLY SPIRIT RESIDES WITHIN US On April 5, 2018 about 1:30 pm, I was headed into a storage closet across from our laundry room to get something I needed. I came to an immediate stop because the Holy Spirit was waiting for me there. He took me inside myself to the place he resides within me, and he allowed me to see myself as God sees me. God spoke to me there as his love washed over me. He told me how pleased he is with me and how very special I am to him. I felt very overwhelmingly blessed and cherished. No one loves like God. Every day I read devotions from God Calling by Two Listeners. (This is not part of the Jesus Calling series that is so popular now.) I do not read these devotions in exact order by date, so although I read it on April 5, the devotion was from September 18. The devotion was titled Dwell There. Many of the devotions are preceded by a Bible verse; this one was no exception. The verse was Psalm 91:1, and it reads as follows: He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the Shadow of the Almighty. (This is my favorite Psalm). The devotion reads as follows (partial sentences are as they appear in the devotion). Hidden in a sure place, known only to God and you! So secret that no power on earth can even find it. But, my beloved children, you must dwell therein. No fitful visit, but a real abiding. Make it your home! Your dwelling place! Over that home shall My Shadow rest, to make it doubly safe, doubly secret. Like brooding mother-bird wings that Shadow rests. How safe, how sure, you must feel there. When fears assail you and cares trouble you, then it is because you have ventured out of that protecting Shadow. Then the one, the only thing to do is to creep back into shelter again. So rest! To experience the Holy Spirit taking me to the place where he resides within me To read Psalm 91:1 which speaks to those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High under the Shadow of the Almighty To read the Dwell There devotion that speaks of a hidden place, known only to God and overshadowed by him a place for his children to be safe and protected All of the above remind us that God is always with each one of us, his beloved children. He has given us the Holy Spirit through his son Jesus. It is the Holy Spirit who bears witness to truth, who guides and directs our steps, who lives within the temples inside each of our bodies. And it is our Heavenly Father who forgives our sins, remembers them no more, and loves each of us his dear and precious children. All praise and honor and glory be His!
