First Christian Church FCC NEWS March 2019 First Christian Church 1806 Central Ave. Hot Springs, Arkansas 71901 Office: (501) 623-3389 Office Hours: 9:00am 1:00pm Monday-Friday fcchs@hotsprings.net www.fcchs.org Church Staff Rev. Don Hubbard Senior Minister (479)653-6285 donhubbard@hotsprings.net Tracy Brodrick Secretary Marsha Burford -Organist Board Officers Mark Whisenhunt Chair Keith Scott Vice Chair Carol Sipe Board Secretary Naomi Hundley Treasurer The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6. This year our service will be held at 4:00pm rather than 6:00pm with hopes that more people will be able to attend at this earlier time. The traditional spiritual practices during Lent include prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The practice of giving up something for Lent is ultimately a form of fasting. Almsgiving involves giving money, food, or other goods to people in need. And prayer is a daily discipline for most Christians. The Apostle Paul urges us to pray without ceasing (I Thessalonians 5:17), yet he also says that we do not know how to pray as we ought (Romans 8:26). Most of us can identify with the last statement. We struggle with knowing how and what to pray. To help address this concern, we will have a mini-retreat focused on prayer, Friday, March 15, from 10:00-11:30am in our Fellowship Hall. I will teach on prayer from Scripture and theology, and introduce a few practices of prayer I have found helpful in my own devotional life. I hope you will attend. Grace and Peace, Don Hubbard

The Season of Lent FCC NEWS Lenten Services at FCC 2019 Wednesday, March 6th is Ash Wednesday, the day that marks the beginning of Lent. Ash Wednesday service at 4:00pm in the sanctuary. Friday, March 15th "Prayer: A Mini-Retreat" 10-11:30am in Fellowship Hall April 14th is Palm Sunday and will be marked with our traditional processional of the waving of the palms, marking Christ s entry into Jerusalem. Thursday, April 18th is Maundy Thursday and will be commemorated through a communion service at 4:00pm in the sanctuary. Maundy Thursday remembers the Last Supper between Christ and His disciples. Good Friday, April 19th a time for prayer. Choose a time that is good for you to commune with God in prayer. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary Easter Sunday, April 21st will be celebrated in the traditional manner through worship and fellowship. We hope you will join us for these special services that will lead us to the empty tomb. March 10t Day light savings begins Sunday, March 10th! Remember to turn clocks ahead 1 hour before going to bed on Saturday the 9th! Say It With Flowers Would you like to remember or honor someone, or mark a special occasion, by placing flowers in the sanctuary on a Sunday morning? An Arrangement of flowers beautifies the church plus honors that special person or time in your life. If you are interested please contact Ann Tucker. * The flowers should be delivered to the church on Friday no later than 11am.

Giving from the Heart The CWF groups want to thank you all again for your support of the Spaghetti Luncheon. They were able to give extra support to the following charities: First Step - $200.00 Kamo s Kids - $200.00 Samaritan Ministries -$220.00 Potter Clay Ministries- $200.00 Change Point Care Center- $200.00 Cooperative Christian Ministries Clinic -$200.00 Shalom House -$200.00 CASA- $200.00 *600.00 was given to FCCHS designated to the church food pantry. The ladies will also be purchasing a new refrigerator for the kitchen. The children and youth made Valentine cards for the Quapaw nursing home and Lara Lowry delivered them. She is shown here with Peggy Goslee. And Music Filled the Air! Again! On February 15th and 16th the Arkansas All-State Music conference took place at the convention center. There were 400 choral students and 600 band and orchestra students sharing their talents. The office got a call from Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Murdock the Associate Director of Choral Studies at the University of Arkansas and director of the UA Inspirational Chorale. Jeffery is also the Minister of Music at First Christian Church in Rogers. They needed a place to practice again this year and they wanted to come back here to our church! We were blessed to have the Intercollegiate Choir practice for two days here in the sanctuary. The Chi Rho Sunday school class needs some bean bag chairs and a solid color small sofa or futon for the youth room. If anyone has any to donate please contact Rachel Shankles.

Appeal for Donations to Pay for the Repair of the Organ and Replacement of Chancel Lights In recent weeks, our church has experienced two large expenses that were unexpected and unbudgeted. Repair of the church organ $2,070.00 Replace lights front of sanctuary $1,600.00 Total $3,670.00 Many members have expressed their appreciation that the organ has been repaired as it enhances their worship experience. Members have commented that those serving at the lectern and communion table have been doing so in very poor lighting. We plan to correct that problem as soon as the lights are delivered. We hope individual members will prayerfully consider making a generous contribution OVER AND ABOVE their regular weekly or monthly commitment to our church to cover the cost of these unbudgeted expenses. We need to complete this needed and worthy fund raising effort by the end of March. As a challenge to church members to give generously, a church family has pledged to match each member donation up to $1,000. Should the amount of money raised exceed the cost of repairing the organ and replacement of the chancel lights, the excess will be held in a restricted fund to be used for future expenses related to the enhancement of our worship experience. The worship committee urges you to join your fellow church members in supporting this worthy cause for our common worship good. Please complete the form below and mail it along with your contribution to the church, 1806 Central Ave. 71901; or enclose it with your contribution in an envelope and place it in the offering plate during the month of March. ------------------------------------------------------------------Print this form------------------------------------------------- Donation for the Organ/Chancel Light Expense Name Address City Zip Code Phone # Email Amount of my donation $25.00 $50.00 $100 $250 $500 $1,000 Other (Fill in amount) Payment Method Check # is enclosed.
