SUPER KIDS 3s, 4s & Kinder Lesson Plan September 2/3, 2017 Classroom Lesson at a Glance... SOCIAL (providing time for fun interaction) Activities that encourage preschoolers to enter the classroom and begin engaging with peers and Small Group Leaders by providing age appropriate and hands on fun while introducing new concepts they will hear in the day s Bible story. Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your 3-, 4-, or 5 -year-olds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. One Little People Adventures WORSHIP & STORY (inviting people to respond to God) Worship & Offering Bible Story GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU. afraid...for the LORD your God goes with you. Deuteronomy 3:16 NIV Elijah and the Fire 1 Kings 18:1-30 GROUPS (creating a safe place to connect) Create a safe place to connect through activities that are written to reach every learning style while reinforcing the bottom line that was introduced during the Bible Story and applying it to real life experiences. In addition, these activities provide preschoolers with an opportunity to build relationships with their Small Group Leader. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time or offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each. Then switch groups and repeat the activities. Memory Verse With Motions Elijah and the Fire Super Kid Journal and Prayer 1

GOD IS ALWAYS WITH ME No Supplies Needed SOCIAL Providing time for fun interaction ONE-TIME ONE time. How many times? (Pause.) That s right. ONE time. Are you ready? Here we go! After the Activity: Great job, everyone! I think you all wore your listening ears today. We did each action how many times? (Pause.) Yes! ONE time. One is a super important number, because we know there is only ONE true God. We ll talk more about our ONE true God in Large Group today! Before the Activity: Gather the children in an open area of the room During the Activity: Ask the children to follow you as you complete ONE move from the list below. TRANSITION: Move to Large Group by chanting the number one. Say, You did an awesome job doing each action only ONE time today! We re going to hear a story about our ONE true God today! Let s go to large group while chanting, One! Clap ONE time Stomp ONE time Hop ONE time Pat your shoulder ONE time Twist ONE time Blink ONE time LITTLE PEOPLE ADVENTURES Adventure Activity Page and several Little People figures Say Hi! ONE time Snap ONE time Before the Activity: Hello, friends! Gather with me over here. (Motion for children to come.) I have a super fun and super silly activity today. I m going to name an action that I want all of us to do Before the Activity: Place the Activity Pages onto a hard surface in the activity area. During the Activity: Give the children the Little People figures and encourage them to move the figures over the different parts of the Activity Page. After the Activity: Make sure each child has a 2

afraid...for the LORD you God goes with you. ~Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV 1 Kings 18:1-39 turn to move a figure GROUPS Creating a safe place to connect Before the Activity: Let s have an adventure! During the Activity: (Point to the Activity Page.) Look at all of the cool stuff on our page! I see mountains, rocks, and a river! (Hold up the Little People figures.) Use these figures to go on an adventure! First, let s climb the rocks. (Move figure over rocks.) Uh-oh, here is a river! Let s go for a swim. (Move figure through the river.) Great job! There is a very tall mountain. Let s start climbing! (Move figure up the mountain.) YAY! We did it! Nice work! After the Activity: That was a fun adventure. You did a super job getting the Little People over the mountain and rocks and through the river! You are all SUPER KIDS! Today in our Bible story, we are going to hear about a man named Elijah. In our story, he is SUPER ELIJAH! I cannot wait for you to hear what he did! TRANSITION: Move to Large Group by pretending to fly while holding a pretend cape out to the side. Say, You are all Super Kids! You can do super things, like climb and swim! I think we should head to Large Group by pretending to fly! Wouldn t that be super? Hold onto your pretend cape like this (demonstrate) and pretend to fly to Large Group. Let s go! ELIJAH AND THE FIRE Elijah and the Altar Activity Page; orange, yellow, and red tissue paper; scissors; crayons; and glue sticks During the Activity: Give each child an Activity Page to color. Show them how to use the glue sticks to glue down the tissue paper squares around the altar to act as the fire. Before the Activity: In our Bible story today, who trusted God to light the altar? (Pause.) Elijah did! Today we re going to create a picture of what that may have looked like. During the Activity: Instead of drawing in the fire, I want us to glue these tissue paper squares (hold up) around the base of the altar. Here, let me show you. (Continue with activity.) After the Activity: Your pictures look great! Did Elijah make the fire appear? (Pause.) NO WAY! God did that. Who was with Elijah that day? (Pause.) God was! Elijah could be brave that day, because he wasn t alone God was with Him! And He is with you too! Who is always with you?? God is always with me. 3

GOD IS ALWAYS WITH ME SUPER KID Elijah Label Activity Page, blue construction paper capes, large craft sticks, and white glue (Optional: Very small googly eyes and blue markers) During the Activity: Encourage the children to glue the cape to the craft stick. Place the label to the stick on the opposite side of the cape. This will be the front of the stick. If you choose to use the optional supplies, help the children glue the googly eyes to the top front of the stick and allow the children to use the markers to draw a mask. Before the Activity: You are all SUPER KIDS! Elijah was super too! During the Activity: We are going to make a SUPER ELIJAH puppet. First, we need to put on his cape. (Glue cape.) Awesome! (Finish activity.) After the Activity: Your Elijah puppets look super! Elijah was SUPER, because he knew that there was only one true God, and he knew that God was ALWAYS with him! He is always with us too! Who is always with you? God is always with me. No Supplies Needed WITH MOTIONS Before the Activity: Say the memory verse with the class several times. During the Activity: Teach the following motions to the children while saying the verse: Be strong (put right forearm and wrist out in front of you, similar to Wonder Wom- 4

afraid...for the LORD you God goes with you. ~Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV 1 Kings 18:1-39 an) and courageous! (Put left forearm and wrist out in front of you and hit wrists together.) Do not be afraid... (wind up in a crazy karate chop pose and chop down on the word afraid ), for the Lord (point your right hand up) your God (point your left hand up) goes with you (put both hands on hips in a strong pose), Deuteronomy 31:6 (hold out hands like a book). After the children have learned the motions, repeat several times. Before the Activity: : We have a new memory verse this month! It is: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid... for the Lord your God goes with you, Deuteronomy 31:6. Now let s say it together. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid... for the Lord your God goes with you, Deuteronomy 31:6. Awesome! Again! (Repeat verse.) During the Activity: Now I am going to teach you some motions that we can do while we say our verse. Watch me and we can do them together. Be strong (put right forearm and wrist out in front of you, similar to Wonder Woman) and courageous! You are all doing so well! Let s do it again! (Repeat verse with motions.) After the Activity: "Way to go! Our memory verse for this month tells us that God is always with us and wants us to be strong and have courage! He is ALWAYS with us! Who is always with you?? God is always with me. JOURNAL AND PRAYER Memory Verse Card paper clipped in your Bible at Deuteronomy 31:6, journal, and fun-shaped pen SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): It s Small Group time! I need my SUPER Kids to come sit with me. That means I need SUPER [child s name] and SU- PER [child s name] and... (give each child a highfive as you say their names). I m so happy you re here today to learn about how God can help us do SUPER things, just like He helped Elijah in our Bible story today. Who remembers what SUPER thing God helped Elijah do in our story? (Pause for response.) Yes! God helped Elijah be brave and tell the king there is only ONE true God. The king wanted the people to worship a fake god instead of the one true God. God heard Elijah s prayer and sent fire down to show everyone that HE is the one true God! It was SUPER! And because God was with Elijah, Elijah was SUPER brave. 5

GOD IS ALWAYS WITH ME You can be SUPER brave too, because God is always with you. Who is always with you? CHILDREN and SGL: God is always with me. SGL: That s right! We don t have to be afraid of doing what God wants us to do, because God is always with us. Hey! I have the perfect Bible verse for us to learn that will help us remember that God is always with us. (Open the Bible.) It says: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid... for the Lord your God goes with you, Deuteronomy 31:6. (Lay Bible down.) Elijah knew God was with him. That is why he was SUPER brave instead of afraid. I want us to be SUPER brave instead of afraid too, so let s stand up and start learning this verse. Just say what I say and do what I do! CHILDREN and SGL: Be strong (put right forearm and wrist out in front of you, similar to Wonder Woman) and courageous! (Repeat several times.) SGL: That was SUPER fantastic! I love that pose at the end! High-five, everyone! (Give each child a high-five.) Now let s sit down for journal and prayer time. One, two, three, come sit with me! (Hold journal and fun-shaped pen.) Raise your hand if you ve ever been afraid of something. (Raise your hand.) I have! I remember one time when I was afraid of... (share something the children can relate to, like the dark or a strange sound). Everyone feels afraid sometimes. Maybe you re afraid of meeting new people or going to the doctor. When we feel afraid, we need to remember that God is always with us. Knowing God is with us can help us be SUPER brave! Let s make a list of things that we are afraid of sometimes. When we pray, we can ask God to help us be SUPER brave instead of afraid. Tell me, what s one thing you re afraid of? (Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) This is a great list. Let s close our eyes and put our hands together so we can pray. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) PRAYER Dear God, thank You for teaching us that You are always with us and that we don t have to 6

afraid...for the LORD you God goes with you. ~Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV 1 Kings 18:1-39 be afraid. Instead, we can be SUPER brave, just like Elijah was in our story today. Please help [child s name] be brave when he feels afraid of (say what he listed) and help... (repeat for each child). Thank You for loving us like You do, God. You are SUPER amazing! Help us to always trust and love You. In Jesus name, amen. DISMISSAL ONLY A BACKGROUND CHECKED ADULT MAY CHECK CHILDREN OUT OF THE CLASSROOM.
