JOURNAL AND PRAYER Memory Verse Card paper clipped in your Bible at Deuteronomy 31:6, journal, and fun-shaped pen SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): It s Small Group time! I need my SUPER Kids to come sit with me. That means I need SUPER [child s name] and SU- PER [child s name] and... (give each child a highfive as you say their names). I m so happy you re here today to learn about how God can help us do SUPER things, just like He helped Elijah in our Bible story today. Who remembers what SUPER thing God helped Elijah do in our story? (Pause for response.) Yes! God helped Elijah be brave and tell the king there is only ONE true God. The king wanted the people to worship a fake god instead of the one true God. God heard Elijah s prayer and sent fire down to show everyone that HE is the one true God! It was SUPER! And because God was with Elijah, Elijah was SUPER brave. 5
GOD IS ALWAYS WITH ME You can be SUPER brave too, because God is always with you. Who is always with you? CHILDREN and SGL: God is always with me. SGL: That s right! We don t have to be afraid of doing what God wants us to do, because God is always with us. Hey! I have the perfect Bible verse for us to learn that will help us remember that God is always with us. (Open the Bible.) It says: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid... for the Lord your God goes with you, Deuteronomy 31:6. (Lay Bible down.) Elijah knew God was with him. That is why he was SUPER brave instead of afraid. I want us to be SUPER brave instead of afraid too, so let s stand up and start learning this verse. Just say what I say and do what I do! CHILDREN and SGL: Be strong (put right forearm and wrist out in front of you, similar to Wonder Woman) and courageous! (Put left forearm and wrist out in front of you and hit wrists together.) Do not be afraid... (wind up in a crazy karate chop pose and chop down on the word afraid ), for the Lord (point your right hand up) your God (point your left hand up) goes with you (put both hands on hips in a strong pose), Deuteronomy 31:6 (hold out hands like a book). (Repeat several times.) SGL: That was SUPER fantastic! I love that pose at the end! High-five, everyone! (Give each child a high-five.) Now let s sit down for journal and prayer time. One, two, three, come sit with me! (Hold journal and fun-shaped pen.) Raise your hand if you ve ever been afraid of something. (Raise your hand.) I have! I remember one time when I was afraid of... (share something the children can relate to, like the dark or a strange sound). Everyone feels afraid sometimes. Maybe you re afraid of meeting new people or going to the doctor. When we feel afraid, we need to remember that God is always with us. Knowing God is with us can help us be SUPER brave! Let s make a list of things that we are afraid of sometimes. When we pray, we can ask God to help us be SUPER brave instead of afraid. Tell me, what s one thing you re afraid of? (Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) This is a great list. Let s close our eyes and put our hands together so we can pray. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) PRAYER Dear God, thank You for teaching us that You are always with us and that we don t have to 6
afraid...for the LORD you God goes with you. ~Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV 1 Kings 18:1-39 be afraid. Instead, we can be SUPER brave, just like Elijah was in our story today. Please help [child s name] be brave when he feels afraid of (say what he listed) and help... (repeat for each child). Thank You for loving us like You do, God. You are SUPER amazing! Help us to always trust and love You. In Jesus name, amen. DISMISSAL ONLY A BACKGROUND CHECKED ADULT MAY CHECK CHILDREN OUT OF THE CLASSROOM.
