The pantomime makes a significant contribution to the church finances and it looks as though the final net profit will be just over 4600.

Wesley Pantomime 2016 Aladdin Well another pantomime has come and gone, and looking though the list of pantomimes it appears to have been our 7 th production of the very popular story of Aladdin. Aladdin was also the first pantomime we ever produced at Wesley back in 1948, long before my time of course! From my point of view as co-producer again of this year s production, I was very pleased with the final outcome and I would like to thank everyone who had an involvement in any way whatsoever. As always it is very much a team effort and thanks are due to everyone on stage and off stage who worked so hard and contributed in various ways to make the production a success. We had many very positive and complimentary comments about the production from members of the audience. Thanks are due particularly to Linda and Jane who both play very important roles and without whom it would be very difficult if not impossible for the pantomime to go ahead. The pantomime makes a significant contribution to the church finances and it looks as though the final net profit will be just over 4600. My first involvement in Wesley s productions of Aladdin was in 1979 when I set up and operated the lighting. Since then I have played the Genie of the Lamp twice in 1987 and again in 2007 and played Widow Twankey in between in the 1998 production. This year my daughter appears to have followed in my footsteps by playing the Genie of the Lamp. As I write this report I am already preparing for our 2017 production which will in all probability be Sleeping Beauty. I am currently re typing Auntie Dot s original script from the last time we did it in 2006 and then it is looking as though it will need something of a rewrite to suit our current needs. We have also just taken delivery of some new lights which have been funded by monies left to the pantomime by Margaret Chambers. These are to be installed during the summer months and which will give us much more versatility in future. We are very grateful to Margaret who is sadly missed by us all. So all being well, and assuming everyone is willing and able, we shall be back in February 2017 with Sleeping Beauty. Ian P Collett

Did you know.. The character of Aladdin was meant to do for Disney Princes what Ariel and Belle had done for princesses. The Genie s lines were recorded up to 20 different ways. Not all of the song lyrics on the video release were the same as in the theatre release. To land Robin Williams, the animators created tested sequences of the Genie peforming the comedian s stand up routines.

Anchor Boys Since half term the Anchor Boys have been very busy working on a piece of artwork for the Battalion Picture Competition. This year the topic was Easter. We have done many activities involving games, stories, quizzes and making Easter nests. All the pictures were of a very high standard. It was very hard to choose only two but eventually we decided upon Harry Sutton for the younger section and Andrew Wiltshire for the older one. For Mothers Day the boys painted shopping bags and made a card. On Saturday 12 th March the boys took part in the Battalion Anchor Fun Swim. All the boys came home with a medal and overall we won the event, well done boys! We then came back to Wesley to sleepover. The boys watched the film Big hero 6. The boys were collected the next morning after church following a visit to the park. During the Easter holidays we have met as normal doing various activities. Forth coming events in May include; the Battalion Anchor Fun Day (and another sleepover) and our Company Awards evening. We currently have 9 members. However we are always looking for new members, therefore if you know of any boys between the ages of 5 and 7 then please point them in our direction.

This year we spent the Easter weekend in London, and had a very enjoyable weekend. I like the Easter Services and the Easter hymns but we missed out on them by being in the Capital. However it was to a large part made up for when we took our place in Trafalgar Square just before 11.00am., on a bright and sunny Good Friday to watch the Passion of Jesus performed by volunteer amateur actors from the Wintershall Estate in Guildford. The passion started at 12.00 noon and took 1¾ hours to play out. It was a very colourful and dramatic performance which included full costumes, a donkey and horses. It seemed a little incongruous to watch the happenings of some 2000 years ago performed in a square with Admiral Lord Nelson looking down on the proceedings from his column, and against a background of red London buses going on their way, traffic lights changing and the occasional siren of ambulances and police cars travelling around the edge of the square. However the trapping and necessities of the 21 st century didn t detract from the story nor from the events of that first Easter. If you are ever in London over the Easter weekend I would certainly recommend a visit to the Passion play which has now become an annual event and is in its sixth year with two performances at 12.00 noon and again at 3.15pm. I have including some photographs which give a flavour of the event. Ian, Jane and Ruth Collett
