ANCHOR AWARD Affectionately known as the Mayor of Marquette, Mr. Charlie Tullier has served the Mercy community in many capacities throughout the years. The Tulliers (Mr. Charlie and his bride Marie) have witnessed many changes on their beloved Marquette Avenue, from the paving of the street; to the building of a school, two churches; and have been active members of the Mercy community since our founding priest, Monsignor Marionneaux was Pastor. Mr. Tullier has worked tirelessly as a volunteer for the parish, not only serving as Cub Scout Pack Master, he also established the Cub Scouts at OLOM. He served as assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts and was later active in the Catholic Committee on Scouting. Mr. Tullier opened the church every day for 30 years, and worked with his wife Marie in the church nursery every Sunday for many years. He is currently an usher, member of the Knights of Columbus, and is a member of the Mercy Hall of Fame. Although not a founding member of the church parish, Mr. Tullier has been part of the Mercy family for so long, in 1961 he drove to the New Orleans airport to pick up the first religious sisters assigned to teach at the school. For the past 60 years, Mr. Tullier s love for Mercy has been unwavering. All 5 of his children are Mercy alums as well as 4 of his grandchildren. Those involved in the OLOM fair construction are sure to know Mr. Tullier as he has been a critical component in most of the major projects on Marquette Avenue. From fair set up to take down, to repairing the church and gym, to building the Parish Activity Center, Mr. Tullier has exemplified self-sacrifice and commitment throughout his years of service. Because of his dedication to the church and school, the newly re-established OLOM Men s Club thought it fitting to present their first Anchor Award to Mr. Charlie Tullier. The Anchor Award is given by the Men s Club to a man who has consistently rendered unselfish service to the school and church. Anchored in family and faith, Mr. Tullier is most deserving of this special award. BATON ROUGE, LA 3

Sr. Ily ilyfercsj@gmail.com (225) 757-6095 Life Teen Camp July 26 - August 2 Dahlonega, Georgia MIRACLE OF THE CORPORAL AT ORVIETO It is that time of year again when life-changing camps are offered for our high schoolers! Camp Hidden Lake is a week-long Catholic summer camp located in scenic Dahlonega, Georgia (July 26-August 2). It is a place where parish youth groups from all over the country come together to dive deeper into their Catholic faith and strengthen their relationship with Christ, while having unforgettable experiences. With prayerful consideration, we encourage you to sponsor a high schooler to attend Camp Hidden Lake this summer. While any donation is greatly appreciated, we ask that you would consider a donation of $500 for our Life Teen members to attend Camp Hidden Lake. We also ask that you would keep us in prayer, entrusting us to the Immaculate Heart and Merciful Heart of Our Lady. Ms. Amelia Gallagher amelia.gallagher@olomchurch.com (225) 926-1883 Fr. Peter of Prague, described as a pious priest, found it difficult to believe that Christ was actually present in the consecrated Host. In 1263 while on a pilgrimage to Rome, the priest stopped in Bolsena, Italy to celebrate Holy Mass at St. Christina s Church. He had barely spoken the words of Consecration when blood started to seep from the consecrated Host and trickle over his hands onto the altar and the corporal. Immediately confused, the priest attempted to hide the blood, but then interrupted the Mass and asked to be taken to the neighboring city of Orvieto where Pope Urban IV was residing. St. Thomas Aquinas was then commissioned by Pope Urban IV to compose the Proper for a Mass and an Office honoring the Holy Eucharist as the Body of Christ. One year after the miracle, by means of papal bull, the feast of Corpus Christi was introduced. In August of 1964, 700 years after the institution of the feast, Pope Paul VI celebrated Holy Mass at the altar where the holy corporal is kept in its golden shrine in the Cathedral of Orvieto. Many pilgrims today journey to St. Christina s Church to see for themselves the place where the miracle occurred. BATON ROUGE, LA 5

Please call the Church Office to make your gift. Memorial Gifts At the death of a loved one, many choose in lieu of flowers to encourage friends and family to make a donation to a special charity or cause. Our Lady of Mercy has nourished the spiritual life of so many parishioners and those throughout the Diocese who come here. A Memorial Gift to our parish and school is a wonderful way to acknowledge the lives of our beloved dead with a gift of loving generosity to the church that has been such a spiritual home. Ms. Deanie Smith can discuss beautiful ways for you to remember your loved one. REMEMBER OUR LADY OF MERCY CHURCH AND SCHOOL IN YOUR LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT A PRAYER FOR PROTECTION DURING HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your Son s command, when He calmed the stormy waters and delivered the disciples from fear and harm. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O Loving Lord, for your Mercy is without end. Spare us from tragedies like those of the past and keep us safe in your loving care. O Virgin Mother, Star of the Sea, we seek your powerful help. Plead for us with Your Son that we might be spared all harm, whether natural or made by human hand, and walk safely in His footsteps until we reach our heavenly home. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us! BATON ROUGE, LA 7

SAINT OF THE WEEK St. Barnabas FEAST DAY: June 11 Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus, comes as close as anyone outside the Twelve to being a full-fledged apostle. He was closely associated with St. Paul (he introduced Paul to Peter and the other apostles) and served as a kind of mediator between the former persecutor and the still suspicious Jewish Christians. When a Christian community developed at Antioch, Barnabas was sent as the official representative of the Church of Jerusalem to incorporate them into the fold. He and Paul instructed in Antioch for a year, after which they took relief contributions to Jerusalem. Later, Paul and Barnabas, now clearly seen as charismatic leaders, were sent by Antioch officials to preach to the Gentiles. Enormous success crowned their efforts. After a miracle at Lystra, the people wanted to offer sacrifice to them as gods Barnabas being Zeus, and Paul, Hermes but the two said, We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God (see Acts 14:8-18). But all was not peaceful. They were expelled from one town, they had to go to Jerusalem to clear up the ever-recurring controversy about circumcision and even the best of friends can have differences. When Paul wanted to revisit the places they had evangelized, Barnabas wanted to take along John Mark, his cousin, author of the Gospel (April 25), but Paul insisted that, since Mark had deserted them once, he was not fit to take along now. The disagreement that followed was so sharp that Barnabas and Paul separated, Barnabas taking Mark to Cyprus, Paul taking Silas to Syria. Later, they were reconciled Paul, Barnabas and Mark.
