The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany Divine Service Setting 3 (LSB pg 184) February 5, 2017 8:00 a.m. AS WE GATHER The classic structural shape of cathedrals and other great churches is cruciform, which means they are built in the shape of a cross. The building sets an imprint of the cross on the landscape, and the people who gather there set an imprint of the cross on the world. Paul writes compellingly to the Church at Corinth, For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2). No matter what the architectural shape of the building is in which we gather for worship, it is cruciform in purpose. We are here to know nothing except Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen Savior. PRESERVICE MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: Hail to the Lord s Anointed LSB 398 INVOCATION and OPENING SENTENCES P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? C: Put on then, as God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Isaiah 58:7; 1 Corinthians 6:19 20 P: God s kindness toward us knows no limits. Let us go to Him, confident that He will grant us forgiveness for Jesus sake. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination P: Heavenly Father, C: we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have failed to show kindness, the fruit of Your Holy Spirit, in our 2

thinking, speaking, and acting. We have not loved You completely or our neighbors as ourselves. We know that You call us to share our bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into our house. We have let opportunities to show kindness slip away from us, exhibiting only what was expected of us and keeping Your kindness hidden within us. Our Lord Jesus revealed His person and ministry through His words and actions. In Your great mercy, forgive, renew, and lead us so that we may be revealed as His faithfilled followers to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. INTROIT Psalm 119:9 16; antiphon: Psalm 119:12 P: Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes! C: How can a young man keep His way pure? By guarding it according to Your word. P: With my whole heart I seek You; let me not wander from Your commandments! C: I have stored up Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You. P: Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes! C: With my lips I declare all the just decrees of Your mouth. P: In the way of Your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. C: I will meditate on Your precepts and fix my eyes on Your ways. P: I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes! C: How can a young man keep His way pure? By guarding it according to Your word. 3

SALUTATION and COLLECT P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray O Lord, keep Your family, the Church, continually in the one true faith C: that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; P: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit 5

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Isaiah 58:3-9a Why have we fasted, they say, and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed? Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God s power. We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived the things God has prepared for those who love him these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 6

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand ALLELUIA HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 5:13-20 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter. You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. 7

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen Sit CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN OF THE DAY: Thy Strong Word LSB 578 vs. 1-4 SERMON: Church of the Weak (1 Corinthians 2:1-12) OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. P: It is truly meet, right, and salutary... evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS 9

LORD'S PRAYER ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF CONSECRATION PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI 10

About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires gluten-free wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions. DISTRIBUTION HYMN: Thee Will I Love, My Strength, My Tower LSB 694 NUNC DIMITTIS 11

THANKSGIVING P: O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good. P: Let us pray We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 12

SALUTATION AND BENEDICAMUS P: The Lord be with you. P: Bless we the Lord. BENEDICTION P: The blessing of God Almighty the Father, who gave His Son for the life of the world; the Son, who has revealed to us God s grace, mercy, and love; and the Spirit, by whose fruit we are seen to be children of God bless you now and forever. CLOSING HYMN: My Faith Looks Up to Thee LSB 702 WE WELCOME FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN We are glad you are here! Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Isn t it wonderful that God Himself refers to YOU as His salt and His light for His world that He seeks to love and save? Empowered by the grace and forgiveness of Christ crucified, we have the privilege and responsibility of bearing witness to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in our every thought, word and deed. We are blessed salt and light that bring glory to God and lead others to praise God rather than praising us for our deeds. While this is hard to accomplish as sinners, we have the righteousness of Christ crucified to carry it out. May God bless us so we can season others with His salt and light to make an eternal difference everywhere we go. Today s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by the members of Trinity Lutheran Church. We thank them for sponsoring this broadcast. We have sponsorship openings in February and March. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast please complete a form and turn it in. Forms are available in the church office. The radio transmission enables our shut-ins, as well as others in our community to hear and participate in our worship. VOTER'S ASSEMBLY MEETING - February 19 th All congregational members are invited to a Voter's Assembly Meeting which will take place at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 19th in the Fellowship Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the implementation of a formal "Call-Committee," which will examine the vacancy left by Pastor Paul. We ask that you prayerfully consider if you would like to be a part of this process. We thank, with grateful hearts, Pastor Paul and Nancy, for all of the Spiritual dedication and devotion they have given Trinity, and ask God to bless the excitement of what they have to look forward to! In His Name, Trinity Leadership Team VOLUNTEER NEEDED! JoAnne Wilke will soon be vacating her volunteer position as a bookkeeper in the church office. She has been a blessing at Trinity, and with sincerest gratitude, we thank her for all of her dedication and willingness to serve the Lord. This means we are looking for a person to volunteer to help us. This person should be familiar with Quickbooks, accounts payable and general duties such as running reports and bank statements that will take care of our financial obligations. If you are interested, please contact Judy in the church office, or call Jeff Cziok - 253-0475. We congratulate JoAnne and Pastor Don Wilke as they retire and enter an exciting new journey! With Sincerest Thanks, Leadership Team Anyuak Resettlement Project After many years of working through government agencies and bureaucratic red tape, three families from our Anyuak congregation are finally reunited, or in the final stages of reunification, with relatives who were refugees living in Kenya. (Much credit for the patience and work that has made this possible goes to DCO Craig!) One of those families is that of our Pastor John Bakou, whose mother, sister, brother-in-law and children arrived on January 19th and are now living in St. Cloud. In both of our worship services of Sunday, February 19th, the Anyuak Resettlement Project will commence. Pastor John s family will be formally introduced at the 10:30am worship service. Information and pictures will be presented that day that will tell the story of these refugees. In an effort to assist these families with the resettlement process into our community, we will be starting a fund that will be used to purchase clothing, food and basic household items. Door offerings will be received after both services. Checks can be made payable to Trinity Lutheran Church and in the memo note: ARP Fund. To help kick-start this fund, copies of Pastor Jeff Cloeter's recently published book, Love & Sent, are being shamelessly promoted by Jeff's dad and made available for purchase. The price of the book is $15 ($15.99 on Amazon), of which $7.50 will go to the fund. Books are available in the church office. Lenten Soup Suppers will begin Wednesday, March 1 st, served from 4:45 to 5:45pm. Volunteers needed for set-up, serving, clean-up or to make soup. Sign-up sheet to bring desserts will be on the kitchen door. To volunteer, talk to Gail Reginek, 253-9462. Come to enjoy great soup and fellowship before the 6pm Lenten worship. 16

We are just 24 days away from Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent - Wednesday, March 1 st! The theme for our faith-journey to the cross and ultimately the empty tomb of Christ this year will be The Passion for Prodigals. Each week we will look at one set of Jesus words from the cross as well as a corresponding section from Luke 15 and the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Pastor Paul and Pastor Dave will engage you every Wednesday through a dialogue-style message as they make connections with what Jesus said from the cross to the parable He told about the man who had two sons. Worship will be at 6:00 p.m. and will be preceded by a delicious soup supper. May our gracious Lord bless our Lenten journey into His Word! SJBC welcomes the renowned National Lutheran Choir (Dr. David Cherwien, director) to present a hymn festival in the Abbey Church for the first time in 6 years. In addition to several choral selections of sacred music, this concert will feature the voices of the audience, joining in the great American tradition of hymn singing. Repertoire will focus on the theme of unity. Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8:00 pm, Saint John s Abbey Church, 2900 Abbey Plaza, Collegeville. Free will offering.
