Paraclete is a term which comes from the Greek and signifies a legal advocate, one who speaks for us. It is only the loving acceptance of this Spirit of truth which allows us to love someone whom we know not by sight but through the testimony of others. The Spirit of truth is the Church s creative memory. It enables us to enter into the mystery of Christ. Thus the Church takes part in the vital communion of Father and Son. The same Spirit inspires us to love Jesus, in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it (1 John 3:18). The love of a Christian for the Master is not satisfied with words. The scriptures attest to the indissoluble bond between knowledge and moral life. To say that we know Christ without keeping his commandments is a lie. On the contrary whoever keeps his word, truly has the love of God been made perfect in him (1John 2:5). By living as Jesus lived, we already pass with him from death to life. Questions of the Week - Reflect and Respond to Scripture John 14:15-21 Jesus speaks of the Father sending to believers "the Spirit of truth." Where do you see the Spirit of truth at work in the Church today? Acts 8:5-8, 14-17 Why do you think Luke records the descent of the Holy Spirit onto the Samaritans? 1 Peter 3:15-18 Peter's encourages believers to defend the faith to non-believers. When have you found yourself in this situation?

MAY 21, 2017 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER PAGE 3 Important Information We are asking parishioners of Holy Sepulcher Parish to attend a very important meeting on Monday, May 22, 2017 at 7:00 PM in church concerning the On Mission for the Church Alive! process. On May 11, 2017, Holy Sepulcher On Mission for the Church Alive! team leaders attended a district meeting at St. Catherine of Sweden Parish. At that time, we received the new parish grouping for our area. We would like to provide and share all the information we received with you at the meeting. Along with providing you this information on the proposed groupings, or alternative groupings, your input and feedback is important. We urge you to attend and let us know what you are thinking. Are You Called to a Vocation to the Priesthood? College and post college men, come to enjoy Breakfast with the Bishop on Sat., June 24 at 7:30 am in Synod Hall of St. Paul Cathedral, 108 N. Dithridge St., Pittsburgh, before the priestly ordinations. Father Nick Vaskov will cook breakfast, Father Mike Ackerman will speak on how to discern your vocation, and Bishop Zubik will host a Q & A session. No cost to attend. To register for the breakfast, email tsullivan@diopitt.org. FESTIVAL OF PRAISE FOR VOCATIONS Come to praise God for the five men to be ordained to the priesthood and pray for an increase in priestly vocations at the Festival of Praise for Vocations on Thursday, June 22 at 7:00 pm at St. Paul Cathedral (108 N. Dithridge St., Pittsburgh, PA). The night includes Adoration, a reflection from Bishop Zubik, praise and worship music by Carl and Erin Stuvek, Evening Prayer sung by the St. Paul Cathedral Schola, opportunity for confession, and a light reception. For more information, contact Theresa Sullivan at tsullivan@diopitt.org or 412-456-3123. THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD The Ascension is one facet of the rich Easter mystery. The reading from Acts relates the event of Jesus leaving his apostles. As a natural or supernatural phenomenon, it certainly merits considerable fascination. Yet the New Testament leaves us without details. We too can gaze up into the heavens and wonder about the Ascension, but this day is not really about a departure. It is a day that unfolds the promise that Jesus will return. It reminds us that Jesus is with us always. Indeed Christ is the vibrant head of the Church which is his body. We do not observe a departure. We celebrate a presence. Thus this day in the fifty-day sweep of Easter is a peculiarly opportune time for relishing our hope and status. We can discover Christ s presence at every turn, renew our flagging spirits with tastes of the kingdom. It simply takes eyes of faith, our innermost vision that sees the great hope, glorious heritage, and immeasurable scope of Christ s power. We should approach this day with open hearts. We do not gather at Eucharist to have the Ascension explained or to memorize exegetical points. We come to be inspired, to offer praise, proclaim the risen One who never leaves us. Each volunteer will be asked to make approximately 10 phone calls. Large baskets or containers are needed for baskets. Please drop off baskets in the coat room. Do you know how to put baskets together? We can use a volunteer to help with that! Please check out the Bee Board and table in the Narthex for basket and item donation ideas.
