The Church Family V Be nice, you are in Bend T he other day I wanted to get back to the Historic Church to say the noon Mass and grew impatient while driving because the guy in front was too slow for me. Then I noticed the bumper sticker Be nice, you are in Bend. Since then, I have seen that bumper sticker multiple times. That bumper sticker contributes to creating a special culture here in Bend. We should all be walking bumper stickers. We should be helping to create a catholic culture here in Bend. We ve got to create a culture of welcome and hospitality in our Church. Everyone has a part to contribute to it. Are you doing your share to create a welcoming St. Francis community and a sense of belonging? In an effort to create that sense of family, we are planning a new Picture Directory for St. Francis Parish. We need your support and cooperation. Thanks to those of you who signed up to be part of the Directory Committee. We have an awesome team. Now, please sign up in the narthex after each Mass, or use our Church Website for a time slot to take your pictures. When you have your photo taken, you will get a few copies of your picture for free, as well as a copy of the Directory. It has been 11 years since the last Parish Picture Directory, and our goal is to get everyone s picture in the new one. It s also going to be a huge help for me to have the faces and the names together. And it will be a great help for all of us to know the members of our Church family. Thanks for your kind cooperation in this matter! Father Jose Help the Louisiana Flood Victims! The USCCB has asked all churches in the United States to take up a special second collection for relief of the thousands of families affected by the most unusual flooding in Louisiana. Therefore, we will be taking up a second collection at St. Francis at all the Masses on the weekend of September 17 18. Please make your checks to St. Francis of Assisi Church and drop it in the second collection taken up after communion with the memo Flood relief. Thanks for your generous support.

4 Fr. Joseph s Corner... ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Angels in the Classroom (Author Unknown) A PASTOR READ a letter from an elementary school teacher at East Hill Church. The gist of the letter was as follows: Last school year, her classroom was made up of little third graders every one having come from either a singleparent family, or a dysfunctional one, or they were undernourished or uncared for, or lived in an abusive home and was beaten, bruised, or raped by other family members. One little girl s dad died of AIDS... and the list goes on. Her heart bled for these kids. Before the 1999 2000 school year had started, she and her husband went to her classroom and prayed over each desk in the room. They prayed that God would place an angel behind each and every child throughout the coming year to watch over them and protect them. A month or so after the school year began, she gave the kids an assignment: to write about what they would like to be when they grew up. Everybody was busy with his or her assignment when Andrew raised his hand. When she asked him what he needed, he asked her how to spell mighty. After telling him how to spell it, she asked him why he needed to know. Andrew said that it was because when he grew up, he wanted to be a mighty man of God. Then little Mark, sitting next to him asked, So, what s a mighty man of God? The teacher, swallowing back her tears, and knowing she herself could not say anything in the classroom, told Andrew to go ahead and tell Mark what it was. So Andrew said, It s a man who puts on the armor of God and is a soldier for God. After observing some conversation going on between Andrew and Mark, the teacher, with a lump in her throat, started to walk away. But then Andrew motioned with his little forefinger for her to come closer. He asked her in a whisper if she believed in angels, and she told him that, yes, she certainly did. Then he asked her if she thought people could see angels, and she answered him that she thought some people probably could. Andrew said that he did, and that he could see an angel standing behind each kid in the room. * * * I don t think there was a dry eye in the church that night! We need to remember to pray for all of the teachers although there is no prayer in school that they will be dedicated enough to pray for the protection of God s angels over the lives of their students. Maybe it wouldn t even hurt to pray at work. Prayerful wishes, Fr. Joseph Religious Ed. / Youth Ministry (K 12) All Classes start on Wednesday, September 21st. Elementary from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and Youth from 5:30 to 8 p.m. R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation) RCIA Classes start Thursday, September 22nd, from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information, email Daniel Gutierrez For more information, email Dan Beougher at: faithformation@stfrancisbend.org or call at: RCIA@stfrancisbend.org or call Dan at: Daniel or Janet at: (541) 382-3631.
