Descendants of Amon WOOD Generation 1 1. AMON 1 WOOD was born in 1777 in Maryland. He died in Jun 1850 in Greene, Illinois. He married Sarah BAKER, daughter of David BAKER, in Kentucky (14 children). She was born in 1782 in North Carolina. She died in 1865. Amon WOOD was counted in the census in 1850 in Greene, Illinois (b1777md, no middle initial). He was buried in Greene, Illinois (Maberry Notes for Amon WOOD: Woodville a small village, situated in the southwestern part of the county was platted as a village on the 10th of October, 1835, by Amon Wood, Seanright Wood and others.... Not long thereafter George Rice opened a general merchandise store and conducted a prosperous business; his successors were aleen Wood and John Bronough. Shortly after the town was laid off, Esquire Wood erected a two-story frame buidling for use as a store, but it was never used as such... 1879 History p429-430 "A. Wood came to Greene county in 1833, and settled on the farm now owned by his son, John L. Aman Wood was born in the state of Maryland, in the year 1777, and was a son of Stephen and Rachel Wood, natives of Maryland. His father served in the war of 1812. Aman moved, with his parents to Kentucky, where he was married to Sarah Baker, a daughter of David Baker. They were the parents of 14 children - Bennett, deceased; James, deceased; Mahulda and Mahala, twins, deceased; Phebe, deceased; Cynthia, married William R. Rice, who died, and she was again married to James Short; Squire, deceased; Sarah, married George Rice, now deceased, and is again married to Gillespie Lapdice; Aquilla, married Mary Dix; Wilson and Allen, deceased; John L., the subject of the sketch which follows, and one child, who died an infant. Mr. Wood came to Greene county in the fall of 1833, settling in Bluffdale township, on the section where John L. now resides. The town of Woodville received its name from Mr. Wood. He died in June, 1850, and was buried in Maberry cemetery. Allen B. Wood became more fortunately situated in life than many in the West in an early day, although for some little time he worked as a farm hand. In 1850 he was united in marriage to Miss Tryphena Mulberry, by whom he had eight children, four of whom are living: John P., Addie, George, and Judy Ethel. Not long after his marriage, Mr. W. embarked in the grocery and dry goods trade in a small building in what is familiarly known as Upper Woodville, commencing his business on a light capital, save wit and energy, he sprang at once into a successful business career, and in after years became the owner of valuable farm property. He died during the Autumn of 1873, after a long and eventful life, and was laid at rest in the Maberry Cemetery. Mrs. Wood, who was born in Kentucky on the 26th of August, 1827, passed away March 18, 1871. Mrs. Wood departed this life May 14, 1878, and was buried in the Maberry cemetery. Mr. Wood owns 97 acres of land on Sec. 36, T. 10, R. 13, on which he raises stock and grain." 1885 History p 836 "Another obit. states that he was aged 75 yrs., 1 mo. and died at his home six miles SW of Carrollton. Mr. Wood or "Judge" as he was familiarly called came to Greene county in 1833 and spent the greater portion of his life on the farm where he died. Funeral services were held at the Woody school house, Wednesday afternoon. The remains were buried at the Maberry Cemetery, one mile southwest of Maberry."
