AUGUSTINE SPOTLIGHT JUNE 10 TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Those who know me, or those who just see me at mass as a Eucharistic Minister or lector, may have noticed that I have lost 25 pounds since New Year s Day. However, I still have 25 pounds to go. People who know me also know that I have been trying to lose weight for about 20 years. It has usually been a yoyo cycle of losing and gaining it back. Hopefully, I will attain my goal, and keep it off. I do see a spiritual aspect of trying to be a good steward of the gift of my body, but that is not the purpose of this spotlight. The purpose of the spotlight is to make the comparison between being a disciple of Jesus and the discipline of losing weight. As I and many others know, losing weight requires a permanent change in life and attitude. Similarly, being a disciple of Jesus means surrendering our wills to the Father s every day for the rest of our lives. Just like one day of sticking with a diet and exercise isn t going to result in a lifetime of weight loss, one day of sincere prayer is just a beginning. We must participate in our salvation; we cannot be passive. We cannot just ask for grace one day and expect to sit back and let it shine. No. I believe that every moment of every day we are challenged to know and follow God s will in our lives. I believe that God s grace is not a magic potion that protects us from sin. Jesus said that if we ask the Father for His Spirit, He will answer that prayer (Lk 11:13). However, the Spirit will not take control of our free will and force us not to sin or to do good. We must make those decisions for ourselves with strength and guidance from the Spirit. So, being a Christian is like dieting for life. It takes active, willful participation in a plan that yields eternal life. But we cannot sit back and expect God to do the work for us. Even St. Paul made the analogy of salvation as a race (1 Cor 9:25). May we pray for the Spirit every day and then accept the gifts of the Spirit as we surrender our wills to God s and be transformed into Jesus disciples every day. Being a Christian is a marathon, not a sprint. Paul A. Gulig Chair, Service Committee and Parish Council 3

From the earliest days of the Church until present time, the formulation of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can be found centrally in prayers, writings, and the liturgy. This belief is that there are three persons in one God, each of which is God, of the same nature and essence. And yet, also distinct from one another in origin: the Father generates, the Son is begotten, and the Spirit proceeds. (CCC # 249-254) 4
