Stewards of the Doctrine; Teachers of the Nations (MT 28:18 20) Enough of this! There were twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Twelve would have also been has also lived a whole cycle of her life ostracized from others. Twelve years she hemorrhaged and was now sufficiently desperate (and broke) where she would risk being in public in her condition and even risk touching a Jewish man. Such would have been extremely taboo in the Jewish culture. To heck with convention; she wanted to be healed! Similar types of life cycles can also be expected in our times. Individuals have life cycles, institutions and communities have life cycles, parishes have life cycles. There are points in time when changes are necessary and inevitable. They are necessary for growth and generativity (a concern for establishing and guiding the next generation). In the second reading from 2 Corinthians 8, Paul tells us, though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. Not that others should have relief while you are burdened, but that as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their needs, so that their abundance may also supply your needs, so that there may be equality. As it is written: Whoever had much did not have more, and whoever had little did not have less death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living. He fashioned all things that they might have being; and the creatures of the world are wholesome, and there is not a destructive drug among them nor any domain of the not want us to be unbearably burdened or miserable; He has created us (all of us) for joy. Once we realize that we -focused attention, we enter a new cycle of life and see more clearly the needs of others. The more attentive we are to the true needs of others, the more effectively we can respond and shoulder to protect what is possibly not improving ourselves in the long run anyway. Summer can be a nice disruption to normal patterns and a natural time for re-evaluation or the beginnings of a new life cycle. -Fr. Rick Building the Kingdom an be quite complex, but we have many tools to help us. One such tool is the Prayer and Action Network from the Diocesan Office of Justice and Peace. This regular e-mailing offers a Biblical perspective on the many and timely social issues of our times. There are answers and strategies to actually restore order in our times in a way that transcends any human intelligence. THANKS BE TO GOD! Please consider subscribing (for free!) to the Network by contacting jean.hill@dioslc.org and become more acquainted with our tradition of Catholic Social Teaching. -Fr. Rick
