Week of October 12, 2014 Twenty-Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time The Pastor s Page The Week at a Glance Dear Family in the Lord, I think we all have favorite quotes. Often, these are words of wisdom that we ve come across, sometimes from famous people, other times from ordinary folks we have been blest to encounter. In a few words, these quotes really seem to pull it together, inspire us, keep us in focus, or lead us into deeper understanding of life s reality. One of my favorites is from St. Teresa of Avila. The now-famous quote is referred to as Lines Written in Her Breviary. She wrote: Let nothing disturb thee, nothing affright thee. All things change. Only God remains. For me, these words not only keep me focused on the big picture, seeking all passing things in light of eternity, but have helped me at various transition points in my life when I ve been challenged to look back with gratitude and then move forward in hope and holy curiosity at what God has in store. I quoted them when, after eighteen years, I said goodbye in my former parish and prepared to come here to share the joys and challenges, the opportunities and adventures, of parish life with you, the united community of Corpus Christi. These words once again become a focus as we move forward in our efforts to become all we need to be as the Church in this area, in these times, reaching out to the challenges and needs that surround us. Many of you look back with gratitude to what you shared as part of three distinct parishes in this city prior to the 2006 merger. Many of those who are now part of our community have only known Corpus Christi are were led here after the merger. Over the past few years, we have been able to resurrect aspects of parish life from the diversity of the parish, and it has enriched our blended community. We ve also been richly blest with new ministries, new programs, and good things that were not part of prior history, but are now enjoyed and enriching, inspiring and challenging us to greater efforts at being contagious Catholics. We can rejoice in the reality that many who formerly were not actively living their faith are now doing so. They felt welcomed! They experienced inspiration and healing! They are now part of the Body of Christ here and are enriching us with their gifts. This weekend, I will be speaking about our parish vision and our efforts to more effectively meet the challenges and opportunities that are before us, to be good stewards of material resources, and to step out in faith, embracing a future full of hope. But, certainly, we need those words of St. Teresa to ring in our hearts as we move forward, embrace change, and discern the best way to move forward. Our focus can be summed up simply: we are seeking to move more deliberately from maintenance to mission. We are seeking to invest our time, talent, and treasure in the most effective way possible as we live out our Mission as a Catholic Community today, grateful for the past, and trusting and enthusiastic for the future. I am grateful to our Parish staff, Building Committee, Finance Committee, and Parish Council for their involvement in the process that brings us to this point. On Tuesday, October 23 rd, I invite you to join us for Evening Prayer and Benediction at 7:00 PM at St. Catherine Church. Afterward, we will gather to answer any questions and listen to observations as to how we can continue to move from maintenance to mission. Let s be united in prayer as we move forward together, embracing the opportunities and the challenges that come with change. WEEKLY ADORATION DAY The more we understand WHO the Eucharist is, the more we will find our desire growing to spend time with Jesus, present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, in the Most Blessed Sacrament. In addition to our churches being open for your visits to Him every day, we are given a great opportunity to come for some oneon-one time in personal prayer and quiet adoration as Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place on the altar of our St. Catherine Church every Thursday from 8:30 AM until 7:00 PM. What a great way to recall, and give thanks, each week for this great gift on the day Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper on that Thursday night before he died! Vespers (Evening Prayer) and Benediction at 7:00 PM bring the day to a close. This brief, communal prayer can be a great mid-week refresher! If you re not free during the day, why not drop in after work and stay to join in the closing at 7:00 PM. And if you are free why not make a weekly appointment with Jesus? FEAST OF ST. Oremus Prayer Study Want to deepen your prayer life to prepare for Christmas? The Catholic Prayer Study, Oremus, will run for 8 weeks starting October 17th. This study teaches you the essentials of an effecttive and fruitful prayer life. In Scripture we read of profound interactions people have with God. We hear of Saints who seemed to have a direct line to Him their entire lives. But most of the time we feel like this is far beyond our reach. After all, we re not prophets, and certainly not (yet) Saints! In our busy lives, prayer is seen as a luxury, when in reality it is at the foundation of a healthy spiritual life. The good news is you can overcome your difficulties with prayer, and it is easier than you might think. Oremus will be offered at St. Michael Parish in Exeter, costs $20, and will provide the beautiful workbook. To register, please contact Corpus Christi parishioner Julia Hoenig at 614-404-6366 or JulieMayHoenig@gmail.com. Worldwide Marriage Encounter Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. Let your Sacrament of Marriage or Holy Orders be the rock for your vocation. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend is October 24-26. For more information, call Jim and Elaine Richard at 1-800-710- WWME or visit www.wwme.org. Attention Veterans: A terminal diagnosis can be a lonely experience for anyone, but for a veteran, that diagnosis can present unique issues. At a time when understanding is needed most, many veterans find themselves isolated, even from family and friends. You can help end that isolation by becoming a Veteran to Veteran hospice volunteer. Who better to support those patients at the end of life than another veteran? Hospice Volunteer Training Sessions will be offered beginning October 20 and continuing each Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:30, through November 24. Must have minimum of five people for training to be held. Classes will be held at Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road in Exeter. To register or for more information, call Martha Carlson at 800-540-2981, X 140.
