St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Fr. Vernon. It didn t take long for the news to get around that Fr. Vernon is being asked to accept a transfer to Sr. Francis Solanus Parish in Quincy. His move was a major topic of conversation at the picnic last Sunday. Here s how the situation developed: Our most-recently ordained priest is Fr. Duc Pham who served in Quincy as a deacon and expected to stay in Quincy after ordination. However, when the Provincial Council was unable to identify someone willing to work in the Vocation Office, Fr. Duc volunteered for that very important ministry. (He had served in the office previously, so he pretty much knows the ropes. ) His move will leave St. Francis Solanus understaffed. The Provincial was determined to leave Fr. Vernon here, despite the fact that Fr. Thinh s arrival meant that some might consider us overstaffed. Unfortunately, our province is running short on parochial ministers; and that led to the Provincial asking Fr. Vernon to accept this transfer. The plan is that Fr. Vernon will go to Quincy for one year and then return to T-Town. That part of the plan is dependent on one of our younger friars making his solemn profession, being ordained to the diaconate, and then being ordained to the priesthood sometime in the spring of 2014. There are a lot of what ifs in that plan. Everybody who knows Fr. Vernon knows that he is a hard worker. Most people don t realize just how much he is doing, though, not only for the parish but also for the friars and for the larger community. His departure will leave a void that will not easily be filled. Fr. Vernon, we know that you are accepting this transfer for the good of the larger Church, but you will be sorely missed by the people of St. Francis and St. Rose. May God bless you in your new ministry and speed your return to us. Catholic Charities. We will have a speaker at SFA this weekend to give the annual appeal for Catholic Charities. The collection will be taken up next weekend. Speaking of Collections The Diocese of Springfield sent out a summary of our participation in the various special collections taken up in the just-ended fiscal year. Of the seven collections listed, St. Francis was the top contributor in five of them. Thank you for your generosity! A closer look at the figures reveals some interesting information. Our per family contribution averaged a total of $13.05 which made us 11 th out of 22 parishes. (The households at St. Michael in Sigel, by contrast, averaged $33.34.) So even though we had good contributors at SFA, not everyone is on board yet. What a Day! Many thanks to those who prepared, volunteered, and participated in the parish picnic last Sunday. What a great day! Let s continue to work together for the building of the parish and the larger Church. Wisconsin. Br. Tom and I had a great vacation with our family up in northern WI. The weather was ideal chilly at night, warm during the day. My sister Anne got back from Mayo Clinic a couple of days after we arrived. The growth near her brain proved to be cancerous; but it was compact, and the surgeons were able to completely remove it. The other tumors were treated with a gamma knife. I was amazed at how good she looked it was impossible to tell that there was anything wrong with her. (My father died of brain tumors back in 1990. At least three of my sisters have been to Mayo to have brain tumors worked on.) Anne went back to Mayo for a follow-up this past week, but I don t have the results as this is being typed. Your continued prayers are appreciated. I didn t get fishing, but I did play plenty of golf. The strawberry season was late, and I wasn t able to get any berries until just a couple of days before heading south again. We made strawberry preserves, but they didn t set like they usually do. I think the frequent rains up there caused the berries to soak up too much water. Going up, we stopped at Manitowoc to visit the friars, including Fr. Maury Hawickhorst who had just arrived. Coming back, we stopped in Marathon, WI, to look at a retreat center that is being run by the Capuchin friars. The Caps have asked us to consider taking over that particular ministry. All in all, a great vacation. It IS a Small World, After All. While I was standing on the 10th tee in Ashland, I met a guy that I had golfed with last summer. Turns out that it was Bill Leakey, the son of a well-known Ashland dentist. Further conversation revealed that Bill is living in Dieterich. He is the founder of Ashland's Deer Creek Seed Company (which I passed while I was up there), and DCSC is now the parent company of Schultz Seed in Dieterich. As I write this, Fr. Joe, Fr. Thinh, and I are at a clergy workshop in Nashville, TN. The workshop is sponsored by the Dominicans. Last night at supper, I sat next to Fr. Allen Moran--the brother of Paul Moran from St. Rose Church. What are the odds? Every morning tell Him, Thank you for your kindness, and every evening rejoice in all His faithfulness. Psalm 92:2

July 22 is the feast of Mary Magdalene. Who was she and is it true that she was a prostitute who followed Jesus around in his ministry? A. Recent biblical scholarship has been trying for a long time to correct Mary Magdalene's misconstrued reputation as a prostitute. Biblical information reveals her as one of the most important disciples of Jesus, following and financially supporting him during his ministry. She is also a faithful witness both to the Crucifixion and the first to see the risen Jesus. Further, in John's Gospel, she is commissioned by the risen Jesus to announce the good news to his disciples. Thus, she becomes the first evangelizer and proclaimer of the risen Lord. Her reputation as a prostitute arose from the misunderstandings of certain texts in Luke. Luke 8:2 reports Mary as being a follower of Jesus "from whom seven demons had gone out." This passage follows Luke's story of the sinful woman, a prostitute, who bathed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. Since that woman is not named, there came to be an association of that woman with Mary Magdalene, "from whom seven demons had gone out." Thus Mary became known as a prostitute. The readings and prayers for her feast day make no mention of her reputation as a sinner. Rather, they emphasize and highlight her role as the first witness to the risen Lord, and the first one commissioned by Jesus to tell of the good news to the disciples. Let us continue to be Mary Magdalene to the world. 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc CCW quilt winner Janet Probst from Teutopolis Thanks so much!!! Officers of Holy Name and CCW Scott Brumleve, Holy Name President Diana Althoff, CCW President Lost and Found. There were two billfolds and a pocket knife and an earring found during picnic clean-up. Come to the parish office to claim these items. Quote from Porta Fidei Through faith, we can recognize the face of the risen Lord in those who ask for our love. As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me (Mt 25:40). These words are a warning that must not be forgotten and a perennial invitation to return the love by which he takes care of us. -Pope Benedict XVI, Porta Fidei (On the Year of Faith ), no 14 Holy Humor...The Tate Family Members Do you have any idea how many members of the Tate family belong to your congregation? There is old man Dic Tate who wants to run everything, while uncle Ro Tate tries to change everything. Their sister, Agi Tate, stirs up plenty of trouble with help from her husband, Irri Tate. Whenever new projects are suggested, Hesi Tate and his wife Vegi Tate want to wait until next year. Brother Facili Tate is quite helpful in church business. Cousins Cogi Tate and Medi Tate always think things over and lend a helpful, steady hand. And, of course, there is the bad seed in the family, Ampu Tate, who has cut himself off completely from the Body of Christ.

July 21, 2013 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time In any household with more than one child, parents have to deal with sibling rivalry. The more benign forms find expression in simple competition, in which one child strives to do better than another in contests or sports. At other times, the rivalry shows itself in a negative light, offering up comments on who's not doing what, whether that is schoolwork or household chores. The supposedly aggrieved child has a heightened sense of justice, often proclaiming that the other child seems to get away with doing less. It almost seems as though this is what is playing out in the Gospel story today between Martha and Mary. Martha wants Jesus to be the arbiter of the dispute, much as if she would be running to Mom or Dad. Mary seems to have found the sweet spot, sitting at the Teacher's feet. Plenty of German-inspired stained glass windows show exactly that, portraying Mary with an almost beatific quality to her face, while Martha stands in the background with a rather sour grimace. Jesus sits between them as though he is the referee between the two feuding sisters. Since the time of Augustine the story of Martha and Mary has often been interpreted as a commentary on the difference between the active and contemplative lifewith the contemplative winning out. It's hard to imagine that a Gospel such as Luke's, so filled with stories of compassion and assistance, would profess that view. It is Luke's Gospel that includes the story of the good Samaritan, the classic example of active love of neighbor. Maybe a better way for us to understand the story of Martha and Mary is this: Mary's example is a reminder that we must clearly hear what Jesus is teaching. We cannot just run about acting as we always have. Rather, we need to take his teaching to heart, and in that way ensure that our actions are based on his commands. 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc Looking for Confirmation Service Hours or just want to help out?
