FAMILY ALTAR ly Passages 2019 Redemption Evangelical Lutheran Church 22500 US Route 11, Watertown, New York All rights reserved. All quotations are from the NIV Bible. The New International Version. (2011). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan All rights reserved. Used with permission. 2

The Family Altar The Family Altar is a routine for personal or family Bible Study. God promises to come to us through his Word and Sacraments and strengthen faith through him. He does this through worship at church. The Family Altar is a connection between what occurs at church at the beginning of the week and what occurs within the home during the week. ly devotional habits connects individuals to God s promises in his Word all week long. This devotional routine will help create lifelong patterns which keep children and adults connected to God s life giving Word. The ly Passage The first component in the Family Altar is a weekly single Bible passage. A list of 52 passages, one for each week of the year, can be found in this booklet. Each passage is connected to the particular week of the church year. Individual passages can be reviewed throughout the week and be committed to memory. Begin by speaking the passage out loud at each dinner time starting on Sunday. Consider purchasing a white board. Place the white board in a commonly seen place and write the passage out at the beginning of the week. Review the passage in the mornings and in the evenings before bed. 1

Why Memorize Bible Passages? 1. The passages provided give clear conceptions of Biblical truth. 2. The Word is our primary weapon against temptation. 3. Memorization equips us to witness to others about the way of salvation in a clear and concise manner. 4. Memorization provides us with strength in the face of life s hardships (and helps us strengthen others when they experience hardships.) 5. Memorization provides us with comfort in times of sorrow (and helps us comfort others when they experience times of sorrow.) Tactics for Memorization Memorization can be hard work, but it is not impossible. Here are some tips on committing passages to memory: 1. Frequently remind yourself and your children why memorization is important (see above.) 2. Try to engage as many sense as possible. Begin by reading the passage out loud. Then write the passage out by hand. Each time the passage is written read the passage out loud. Try to erase certain words until the passage can be said by memory. This technique could be used on the family white board erase a couple words each day until, by the end of the week, the passage can be said without help. 3. Repetition is the mother of learning. Repetition of the technique above is helpful. Repetition should be frequent but spaced throughout the week. 4. Recall the passage reciting the passage in the morning, at dinner, and in the evening helps with this. 5. Know the meaning of the passage. Being able to paraphrase the passage can be helpful. Parents will need to teach children what the passage means (reading the passage in the context can help with giving the parent a better understanding of the passages meaning.) 6. Have fun with learning make a game of it. 2
