Theology of the Body (Column 30) Marriage as a Sacrament a study of Ephesian 5:21-33 The grace that God gives us in the sacraments is invisible to us. However, it is not only the grace that is invisible to us in the sacraments, but the reality that we partake in. The sacraments make present the mystery of Christ s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. What took place in time nearly 2000 years ago is eternally present to God. In the celebration of the sacraments, the reality of those events present to God are made present to us. What is visible is united to the invisible, what takes place in time is united to what is eternally present to God. In baptism, for example, the person is really joined to the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection. The person is incorporated into Christ, made one with Him, sharing with Him in His Divine Life. The person truly becomes a child of God in the order of Grace. This invisible reality is present in the visible sign of the person being baptized with water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We will return to this because this goes to the heart of what St. Paul is speaking about in his letter to the Ephesians when he says: For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one. This is a great mystery, and I mean in reference to Christ and the church. The sacraments are mysteries. However, I do not us this term mysteries in the generic sense like a mystery novel, but in a historical sense in which the word mystery has been applied to the Paschal Mystery of our faith in Sacred Scripture, namely St. Paul, by the early church fathers, and throughout the history of the Church to Pope St. John Paul II s Theology of the Body. The word sacrament can be, and has been, used in a more generic sense for anything that is an outward sign of an invisible reality. The Church is called a type of sacrament. It is not one of the seven sacraments in the strict sense of the word. Jesus established seven sacraments, giving us the outward sign to designate the sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Confession, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders. The outward sign of each sacrament was chosen by Jesus Christ and consists of matter and form. Matter is the stuff of the sacrament: water, chrism, bread & wine, confession of sins, anointing with oil, man and woman, laying on of hands. Form is the word of the sacraments that make the stuff of the sacrament a sacrament rather than a bath, a fragrant oily forehead, still bread and wine, confession without absolution, oily hands and forehead, still two, or just another man. Rather, the words I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with the pouring of water over the forehead means the person has been bathed in the Paschal Mystery of Christ s death and resurrection in a real but invisible manner as with each of the sacraments, including marriage, when a man and woman stand together and freely profess the vows of marriage. When they do so (all other necessary requirements being fulfilled) then they are no longer two but one. However, the sacrament is not complete yet. Just as in Mass when the priest consecrates the bread into the Body of Christ, the reality of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity are truly present, but the sacrament of the Eucharist is not yet complete. The dual consecration of the Body and Blood must take place. In so doing, not only is the reality of Christ s Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity made present, but so is the mystery of Christ s death. The Sacrament is still incomplete until it is consummated consumed at least by the priest but also by the faithful, for the Sacrament of the Eucharist is the Sacrament by which Christ is made present, His sacrifice offered, and He is received. So too in marriage the vows do not complete the marriage. The sacrament of marriage is incomplete until the couple consummates the marriage in the conjugal act. When the couple consummates the marriage, then they become one flesh. Now it can be said they have been joined by God. I get ahead of myself. I will return to the nature of marriage as a sacrament later on. I first wanted to explain the meaning of a sacrament. Now to return to St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians. In Jesus and Mary,
