Smooth Sailing by Father Michael Hopefully, this will be my final parking lot progress report. We lost Monday as a work day due to the weather. The workers also needed to accommodate two funerals this week. I am assured that, in spite of all of this, we should be completely finished by the weekend. Last weekend before the 8:00 Mass, I volunteered to be on traffic patrol out on Nichols Rd. I made one interesting observation as I stood in the street waving my arms. Far more cars approach the parish from the south than those that come from the north. That is my fascinating fact for the week. Many thanks to all of you who have given to our fundraising effort. Our thermometer (on page 11) is approaching the halfway point. We appreciate your help with this project. Last week I received a call from the Bishop s Office asking me if I would serve as the Dean in this corner of the Diocese. Rockville Centre is broken up into fourteen clusters of parishes called deaneries. Our cluster is known as the Smithhaven Deanery, which consists of eight parishes. The Dean has a few specific duties such as an annual review of the sacramental records as well as officiating at the installation of a new pastor. But beyond that, the deans also serve as a consultative board to the Bishop and may have input into Diocesan policies. I am very happy to have been asked and look forward to serving the wider Church in this capacity. Normally, at this time of year we begin our raffle basket fundraiser. We have new leadership in the Fundraising Committee, and this year the raffle baskets will take place in the spring rather than around Thanksgiving. The one exception is for the prize of my cooking dinner at the house for the winner and seven of his or her friends. I like being able to host dinner at my house near Christmas when all the decorations are up. We will be selling raffle tickets for this prize in the coming weeks. More information about this will be coming. This week our Nation remembered and honored all our Veterans who have served in the Armed Forces. So many men and women have sacrificed tremendously for the sake of serving our great land. We are most appreciative to all those who have dedicated a part of their lives to this important work. We pray for those who continue to carry physical and emotional scars as a result of their service. Please keep our young people in your prayers this weekend as they are on their Fall Retreat. Continue to pray for peace and for an end to all senseless violence. 3

PARISH OUTREACH BE AN ANGEL THIS CHRISTMAS! ANGEL TAGS are available this weekend in the baskets on the small marble pillars on the Altar. Once again we are requesting gift cards for both clothing and toys for the households in our area that Outreach assists. Therefore, the BLUE angel tags have requests for a store gift card on them. We encourage you to consider providing a holiday gift card so that our neighbors are able to purchase the items that best fulfill their family s needs. When you purchase a gift card, please put it in an envelope and place it in the Gift Box on the table near our Angel sign. Gift cards do not need to be wrapped. PLEASE BE SURE THE AMOUNT IS NOTED ON THE GIFT CARD OR ENVELOPE. THIS INFORMATION IS NEEDED SO PARISH OUTREACH CAN DISTRIBUTE THE CARDS EQUALLY. (Remember: Gift cards need to be activated at the store register.) The Angel tags are coded as follows: BLUE: Families of the Holy Cross Outreach Program RED: Our friends at Olsen s Rest Home PURPLE: Talbot House, the Catholic Charities crisis center for those struggling with addiction GREEN: Toys for children in the Brentwood area serviced by Pronto ORANGE: Mercy Haven, an organization that provides community residence housing for those living with mental illness PINK: Supermarket cards to enable a family to have a special meal If you choose a tag listing a gift item for Olsens or Mercy Haven (red or orange), please wrap and attach angel to top of package. Items for Pronto and Talbot (green or purple) do not need to be wrapped. Gifts and gift cards can be returned for the next 3 weekends. PLEASE NOTE: Sunday, Dec. 3rd is the last day to return gifts and gift cards. Many thanks to our Holy Cross Angels who give so generously each year to make our Angel program successful!! 6

BANNS OF MARRIAGE Second Time Megan Bayley & Alexander Cranshaw Kathleen Lank & Harry Wareing SPECIAL COLLECTIONS This week at the offertory we will also be collecting for our Renovation and Major Repairs Fund. Thank you to all who have supported this collection and also to those who have responded to our request for donations for our parking lot! Next weekend, we will also be collecting for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development which includes Home Missions (CCHD). CCHD was founded 40 years ago by the bishops of the United States when they realized that the lives of those in need would not improve until the systems and policies that keep people in poverty were changed. For 40 years, CCHD has funded community groups that seek justice and create lasting change. Your contribution will help fight poverty in America and defend human dignity. Thank you for your support of these important collections! ATTENTION LITURGICAL MINISTERS! We know it seems early, but we are starting to plan for the Christmas schedule.
