Forgiveness e are heading toward Lent this week, and one of the W themes that will be prevalent in these next seven weeks is the one of forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace. I share with you this touching story that is much more common than you think. I ve seen many families collapse because they were too proud to ask for forgiveness, and too arrogant to say a simple sorry and move on. Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding, and it grew into a major difference until it finally exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence. One morning there was a knock on John s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter s toolbox. I m looking for a few days work, he said. Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you? Yes, said the older brother. I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That s my neighbor. In fact, it s my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us. He took his bulldozer to the river levee, and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I m ready to take revenge. See that pile of lumber resting by the barn? I want you to build me a fence an 8-foot fence so I won t need to see his place anymore cool him down, anyhow. The carpenter said, I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post-hole digger, and I ll be able to do a job that pleases you. The older brother had to go to town for supplies, but he first helped the carpenter get the materials ready, and then he took off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, and nailing. About sunset, when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer s eyes opened wide, and his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge a bridge that stretched from one side of the creek to the other a fine piece of work, handrails and all! And the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming with his hand outstretched. You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I ve said and done. The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each others hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox onto his shoulder. No, wait! Stay a few days. I ve a lot of other projects for you, said the older brother. I'd love to stay on, the carpenter said, but, I have many more bridges to build. et s hope we can spend more time building bridges L instead of building fences. Let s hope we can reconcile with enemies during this Lenten season. Remember that nothing beats a failure but a try! God bless you, Father Julian

A Grateful Heart... In today s world, we take much for granted. There are many who would love to spend more time with Jesus in Adoration but who are housebound, sick, or striving to provide for their families. Then there are those around the world who risk their lives for the Eucharist in places where they are persecuted for their faith. When you remember those who walk for hours or days in dangerous situations in order to be present with Jesus, you realize what a gift it is to be able to pray openly. Not to mention having good shepherds our priests to minister the sacraments. Ruth Baker, St. Francis Church, Sherwood, OR Clean Slate at Bethlehem Inn! Please join Girl Scout Shannon Moyer in supporting the 82 residents at Bethlehem Inn. Shannon will be collecting detergent pods, unscented drier sheets, and bags to make packets for her Gold Award Project. Her goal is to make enough packets for 10 laundry loads per resident. There will be laundry baskets in the Narthex for your donations until February 21st. Thank you for your support! Married Couples The Gospel today shows us that trusting in Jesus and doing what He tells us to do can make a powerful difference in our lives!
