Mr John Braven Cambell Rathbone Dear Parents, Children and Friends, COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY Last week we joined together as a community and planted over 300 native trees and fruit trees at the front of the school. Every child from Kindergarten to Year Six had the opportunity to plant at least one plant and we were blessed to have many parents join us for the morning. We thank Mrs Kim Eckert and her helpers from Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group who not only donated the native plants, but took the time to teach every child how to suc cessfully plant with love and educate every child about the importance of actively caring for nature. We also thank our parents for their very generous donations of the fruit trees, mulch and soil. We especially acknowledge Mr Mark Baroni from the School Board for his vision and immense practical assistance, Mr Nick Baroni for donating his time to care for the plants in their infancy and Mr Nick Whitbread for donating his time and expertise to assist with the reticulation. We look forward to adding mulch and pea gravel to our garden in the coming months and developing a reflection area and Australiana garden. Miranda Swann Principal CURRICULUM NEWS USING DATA TO DRIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING At St Joseph s School, we place a great deal of importance on the collection and use of student data, in order to improve outcomes for students. Following with our clear and explicit assessment schedule, teachers collect data from all learning areas. As you would be aware, this year we continue to be involved in the Dr Lyn Sharratt Collaborative Learning Project. As a part of this program, we are able to learn how to further enhance the use of our data through discussions with Lyn and other schools in the project. Discussions around data and how teaching and learning can be enhanced based on the data collected occur on a regular basis. Our weekly Curriculum Meetings are driven by current data and provide a wonderful opportunity for staff to engage in a professional dialogue, seek advice, share student celebrations and offer suggestions. OPEN NIGHT SAVE THE DATE! Our annual Open Night will take place on Wednesday 21 September from 5.00-6.30pm. This is always an exciting event as it provides another opportunity for students to share their work and learning from the term. More information regarding Open Night will feature in future newsletters. Have a great week! Luke Shaw Assistant Principal RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CANDIDATE/PARENT CONFIRMATION WORKSHOP AND MASS Our Candidate/Parent Confirmation Workshop will be held this Thursday at 6pm. We look forward to seeing you then. All students in Year 6 who are enrolled to participate in this sacrament must attend this meeting with their child. Our Confirmation Mass will be held at All Hallows Church on Sunday 21st August at 5:30pm. TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD The 6th of August celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lord. On the Mount of Transfiguration Jesus reveals to three of his disciples, his glory as the Son of God. His aim is to strengthen their faith in him as they make the difficult journey to Calvary. Jesus does something similar for us in the Eucharist. He invites us to step aside from our daily chores to pray, to listen to his word and be nourished by him. Strengthened, we go out from Mass ready to take up our journey along the way of the cross. WHOLE SCHOOL MASSES We have two whole school masses coming up, 8th August we celebrate St Mary of the Cross (Mary MacKillop) and 12th August is Assumption of our Lady. Both masses will be held at All Hallows 9:30am. Please come along and join us. Sharon Pavlinovich Religious Education Co-ordinator

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION EDUCATION IN FAITH PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Spirit of wisdom and understanding, enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries of the universe in relation to eternity. Spirit of right judgment and courage, guide us and make us firm in our baptismal decision to follow Jesus' way of love. Spirit of knowledge and reverence, help us to see the lasting value of justice and mercy in our everyday dealings with one another. May we respect life as we work to solve problems of family and nation, economy and ecology. Spirit of God, spark our faith, hope and love into new action each day. Fill our lives with wonder and awe in your presence which penetrates all creation. Amen. P & F NEWS Movie Night/Date Night Extravaganza!! Kids will be treated to a movie, pizza, juice and chips. There are limited spaces available so get in quick. $10 per child. Please fill in the below slip and return to the school by Friday 12th August. Name of Child/ren: Year level/s: Allergies: As members of the Year Six class will be receiving and celebrating the sacrament of Confirmation this term, our attention in class has turned to gaining a better understanding of the Holy Spirit, and the gifts that are bestowed upon us. In discussing the sacrament of Confirmation, I find myself reflecting upon my own experience and understanding of Confirmation. I recall the discussions in class about strength, the special strength of the Holy Spirit, though far more vivid is the memory of the strength of the community. Here we were, receiving a sacrament that our parents, grandparents, sponsors and teachers had received and celebrated. In celebrating the sacrament, we had a shared experience, one that was larger than just school or home, but included the community in which we lived. We were a part of something, and in being a part, there came strength strength of family and community.
