Na'hman says (it is the new year) for divine judgment, as it is written [Devarim 11:12]: From the beginning of the year till the end of the year, i.e., at the beginning of the year it is determined what shall be at the end of the year (Babylonian Talmud, Rosh Hashanah, p. 13). This year, in conjunction with Selichot and courtesy of a grant from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater (UJFT) and the Simon Family Foundation, Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH), the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, hosts a Scholar in Residence on 15 and 16 SEP 2017. Rabbi Jason Rubenstein (our former student rabbi), Dean of Students and Alumni at Yeshivat Hadar, begins our conversations with an Erev Shabbat dinner on Friday, 15 SEP 2017 following 6:30 PM services. Our studies continue through a Kiddush luncheon on Saturday, 16 SEP 2017, and conclude with Selichot at 8:30 PM that evening. Please send your RSVP to arrive at the synagogue by Sunday, 10 SEP 2017 for the Erev Shabbat dinner. The cost is $18/person for ages 19 and older, $10/person for ages 11-18, and free for those under 10. You may request a vegetarian meal and indicate a need for babysitting services in our building. You may also register online at http://tinyurl.com/kbh-registration1. To assist with the event, please contact Ms. Alene Kaufman via kbhsynagogue@gmail.com. KBH hosts local Tidewater Conservative congregations for Selichot on Saturday, 16 SEP 2017. The program, Remembering, Forgetting, and Repenting with our scholar in residence begins at 8:30 PM in the KBH sanctuary. At 9:30 PM we break for refreshments, with area clergy conducting the joint service at 10:00 PM. The synagogue reinstitutes High Holiday tickets for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Members receive tickets, along with additional details about our Scholar in Residence weekend and all the holidays, via a separate mailing. If you desire tickets, or know someone who may, please ask the person to contact the synagogue via e-mail at kbhsynagouge@gmail.com or mail their request to the synagogue. As a reminder, no person, other than a law enforcement officer with jurisdiction that includes the City of Virginia Beach, shall bring any dangerous weapon within the building, without the explicit written consent of the Board. Joint Erev Shabbat Service with Beth Chaverim Friday, 08 SEP 2017 6:30 PM KBH Sanctuary Volunteers Requested for Sukkah Construction Sunday, 01 OCT 2017 10:00 AM Rain or Shine You have many options when purchasing a lulav and etrog for Sukkot. One is via Chabad of Tidewater at goo.gl/mpyan7. Consider participating in a joint Erev Shabbat service with Beth Chaverim at 6:30 PM on Friday, 08 SEP 2017, in the KBH sanctuary. Homeowners and renters insurance typically fails to cover flood damage. More than 20% of flood claims come from properties outside the high-risk flood zone. 59.4% of Virginia residents seeking Hurricane Matthew Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance did not carry flood insurance, (better than the national average). Did you purchase a separate flood insurance policy? Visit www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program for more information. Yom Kippur Book of Life Information 30 SEP 2017 / 10 Tishrei 5778 Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH), the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, distributes a Book of Life on Yom Kippur. Participants dedicate this pamphlet in memory of family and friends, whose names we read during the Yom Kippur Yizkor (Memorial) service. By honoring their memory through gifts of tzedakah, their contributions become a living memorial and support the continuity of Jewish life and community. Yom Kippur starts the evening of 29 SEP 2017 on this year s secular calendar, with Yizkor occurring around noon on Saturday, 30 SEP 2017. The Book of Life automatically includes those you memorialize with a synagogue yahrzeit plaque. If you wish to include an additional name in the KBH Book of Life, we request a donation of $36 for the first two names, with $10 for each additional name. Please neatly print the name of the person you wish to include, and the person(s) remembering the name we shall read. We assume you wish the names grouped together unless otherwise indicated. Kindly include your donation with your request to arrive no later than Monday, 25 SEP 2017 to: Kehillat Bet Hamidrash Attn: Book of Life 952 Indian Lakes Boulevard Virginia Beach, VA 23464-5655 We cannot guarantee acceptance of verbal requests or publication of submissions that arrive in the synagogue building after 25 SEP 2017.
