Order of Worship 11:00 a.m. June 12, 2016 ~ Gathering before the Word ~ Prelude Jupiter Holst Welcome & Service of Friendship Pastor Darryl Evans *Call to Worship Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is still near. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I am." *Hymn of Praise No. 427 How Firm a Foundation FOUNDATION *Prayer of Confession O Lord, great God, filled with mercy and steadfast love, we are embarrassed to come before you, for we have preferred the ways of this world to your ways, we have rebelled against your wisdom and we have gotten into trouble, we have rejected your fatherly guidance and have gotten lost altogether. Forgive us, not on the ground of our own righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercy in the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. It is in His name that we pray, for He is our Savior and the mediator of the covenant of grace. Leader: People: *Song of Response (Please continue in a moment of silent, personal confession.) Believe the Good News of the Gospel: In Jesus Christ we are all forgiven! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. ~ Proclaiming the Word of God ~ Anthem How Can I Keep From Singing? arr. by Richard Walters David Hamilton, tenor Kay Yates, piano *Psalm 96 A Call to Worship O sing new songs unto the Lord, With shouts God's name adore; Proclaim salvation day by day, God's glory evermore! Our God to whom all voices rise Is worthy of our praise; Who formed the earth beneath our feet, The sun to light our days. All lesser idols fade away, As wisdom intercedes; The greatest feats our minds conceive Are pale beside God's deeds. O heav'ns, be glad; O earth, rejoice! Your deeds and praise accord To God, and with creation sing The glories of the Lord. ELLACOMB Scripture Reading Acts 17:1-9 Leader: People: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon The Perfect Storm Darryl Evans "And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, 'These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus. Acts 17:6-7
~ Responding to the Word of God ~ *Affirmation of Faith Revelation 3:14-16, 19-21 And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. Summer Sunday School begins TODAY: Summer Stories for youth and adults 9th grade and up - Who doesn t love a good story, especially one that tells about the amazing love and healing power of Jesus! Each of us has stories to tell, even as we may struggle with feeling ordinary or not good enough. That s what is so amazing--god meets us right where we are; and so often we know this truth personally, yet we do not share in the joy of experiencing it together. Summer Stories gives us a relaxing space to talk about the encouraging ways God works in our lives. This summer we will continue with the beloved Summer Stories of last year as we share not only our lives together, but help one another see how God is working in us today. It is a wonderful time to make or deepen friendships while learning about God. The men will meet in the Session room and the women will meet in the Drummond classroom. SHINE for children 3 years - 4th grade will be led by a rotation of teachers during the Sunday School hour in the Children's Church room on the 3rd floor. Hands on Psalms for youth in grades 5 through 8 will be led by Tracy Caskey in the 5 th & 6 th grade classroom on the 3 rd floor. VBS is scheduled for THIS WEEK, June 13 through 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with dinner and group worship in the fellowship hall and children's class rotations in various classrooms.
