Newsletter Editor: Gloria Teague, glorchid@iglou.com From the President Hi KOS members... Orchid News Kentucky Orchid Society, Inc. June 2018 Louisville, KY June Speaker: Stephen Benjamin, Growing Sarcochilus Wednesday, June 13, 2018 Immanuel United Church of Christ 2300 Taylorsville Road 6:15 pm, Social hour, 7:00 pm Meeting WE DID IT!!!! Locust Grove was a TOTAL success. We succeeded in every way possible: a. We had a great location with a slight breeze; b. The weather WAS perfect EACH day; c. The people who were on staff there were extremely accommodating to the vendors; d. We signed up 6 new members to sign up on the spot; e. We marketed our society which will open up many doors; f. People have even stopped me and said, "Weren't you the lady on TV with the orchid society? AND G. WE PROFITED $1400. YAY!!!!!! Everything about it was spectacular!!!!! One of the most important aspects to Locust Grove is spending time with many KOS members that I never knew well before. This comment was made by several members. You don't get to know people by sitting in a meeting! That was definitely one of the special things about being there 3 days straight!!! (along with Linda Solley K) We really did work as a KOS team each of us providing different items to make it what it was. Thank you to each of you for doing what you signed up to do. Real TEAM WORK. Some of us celebrated at LouVino's Restaurant Friday night and had a great time. Every person associated with Locust Grove deserved a pat on the back - along with super food and beverages!

There were only about 14 Phals. left from our sale. It was a crap shoot for what I ordered for this event. More Phals from Florida than the Hawaiian plants. If any KOS member wants to purchase a small or large Phal. at super prices email me. Moving along, the bus from the nursing home broke down and they had planned an excursion to Locust Grove. Needless to say they were upset. If anyone has any ideas of another volunteer project...nursing home, school...email me. Our 2nd large fundraiser will be in October at Jan Smith's house. Thank you Jan and John for having having the KOS picnic this year. There will be a plant auction too. We'll discuss this at our meeting. We will now be teaching about orchids at TWO Lowe's locations. They both want us, the Lowes at the Paddock and Hurstbourne Lane. As you guys know my mission as President is to have 2 fundraisers, do volunteer work and get new members. At Locust Grove as I mentioned 6 new members. My belief has always been educational to LEARN about orchids but we have to have FUN while doing it. Our club has kind of been at a standstill over the past couple of years so I am TRYING to open up some new venues and make this a team to whatever we might do!!!! Guess your orchids are outside now!!! Mine are. Good job KOS! Hope to see EVERYONE at our next meeting June 13th. Ruth Schneider, President rblschnei@gmail.com From the Vice President Locust Grove Gardiner s Fair, May 2018 Ruth Schneider, Keith Kaiser, reporter WDRB tv; Sal Locascio I am glad to have May behind me as it was unbelievably busy! But, it was full of orchid fun with orchid friends. So glad I have gotten to spend time with many of you! I am also glad that all my orchids are outside

for the summer. The benches are scrubbed and bleached but won t be used until October. It s wonderful to see my orchids swaying in breeze. I know they love being out for the summer as much as I love them out. I hope everyone enjoy Janet Lamborn of Agdia Inc. talk about orchid viruses last month. Don t forget that there is a promo code in the literature she passed out for a 20% savings on test kits ordered. June s speaker will be Stephen Benjamin of Oaknob Orchids. Steve will be speaking on growing Sarcochilus. This is a relatively new genus of orchids so Steve expert insights into their culture will be a help for many of us who have yet to try our hand at growing them. Steve will also have plants for sale. Don t forget that Plant Doctor and Beginner s Corner will begin at 6:15 pm. So, bring in any ailing plants or plants that you may need some tips on repotting. Speakers for 2018: JULY 11: Russ Vernon: Growing Cool Growing Orchids and Lycastes; AUGUST 8: Edgar Stehli: Central American Beauties: Epidendrums; SEPTEMBER 12: Show chairman, Rick Willias: KOS Show Prep; OCTOBER 20: KOS Annual Picnic; NOVEMBER 14: Jim Franz: Phragmipediums: South American Slippers and their Culture; DECEMBER 12: Annual Christmas Dinner Pam LaRocco, Vice President pamlarocco@hotmail.com Minutes The KOS monthly meeting held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ @ 7:00 pm. There were 35 members present. Two new members received free raffle tickets, Ann Hurst and Michelle. No Treasurer s report was presented. President Schneider presented the April meeting minutes via the monthly newsletter. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as presented by the membership. Old Business President Schneider reviewed a recent event, Cherokee Park Rehab visit chaired by Liz Smith went very well. She contacted AOS and sent some pictures to update them. On June 30 th from 10 am 2 pm, we will hold an orchid info event at the Lowes at The Paddock. We will consider doing it again later in the summer at the Hurstbourne store.

Vice President Pam LaRocco updated us on the new computer we are about to purchase for the Society. It will have the Orchid Wiz program and ACCESS to use with the Jim McCulloch s Show Program. Gloria Teague presented 5 or 6 items for silent auction with proceeds going to the Society. Vice President Pam LaRocco introduced our speaker, Janet Lanborn, an orchid specialist, speaking on testing your plants for a virus. A very interesting topic, thank you Janet.
