Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council No. 4483 15 North Hickory Avenue Arlington Heights, IL 60004 (847) 255-4483 www.kofc4483.org July 2015 Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Grand Knight. For those that could not make the installation, I have included it as this month s newsletter article. It was probably better in person, but I still wanted to share it with you. In any case, you ll most likely get plenty of opportunities to hear me talk in the next 12 months. Reverend Father, Worthy District Deputy, Brother Knights, Honored Guests, Family and Friends It is an honor and a privilege to be installed as Grand Knight of Holy Rosary Council for the new Fraternal Year. It is humbling to walk the path of our Past Grand Knights, some sitting in this room and others on the wall through that door. Their accomplishments and dedication needs to be recognized and acknowledged. Not the least of which are the achievements of our immediate Past Grand Knight Mike McNicholas. He led us with innovation, determination and vision. Like all Past Grand Knights, we owe him a debt of gratitude and respect for the work he did and the leadership he provided. In the coming Year, I look forward to building on Mike s and previous Grand Knights accomplishments and instituting our own. I appreciate and treasure the advice that I have received from Past Grand Knights and longtime members of the council. I think one of the most valuable came from Past Grand Knight John Naylor, who advised, As long as you don t go to New Haven and kick the Supreme Knight in the shin (ok, he didn t say shin) you will be fine. Sage advice and I intend to follow it to the tee. I hold the principals of our order; CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY and PATRIOTISM sacred and intend to apply them in what we do. Charity has never been a problem or question for this council. Last year we donated over $6,000 to deserving organizations and individuals, we and our partner organizations raised over $19,000 in our annual Tootsie Roll drive. Members of Holy Rosary also supported Catholic men as they further their vocations in religious life. We have shown open hearts and wallets. Unity and fraternity are also practiced. Annual events like the Turkey Shoot, Christmas Party, Breakfast with Santa, Past Grand Knights Dinner and Fish Fries Have brought us together and will continue. We will also use our monthly meetings to instill the tenants of Unity and Fraternity. Our extraordinary cook, Chuck, will continue on to make sure we will not go hungry at least twice a month. I do feel that our social meeting should be true social events with speakers and presentations of interest to our fellow Knights, their families and members of our 4 parishes. Our gatherings should have meaning and purpose. Stay tuned, but know that as I believe PGK Phil Kruger has said in the past, If everyone does a little, nobody has to do a lot. We are going to have great events, but we will need member participation to make them happen and successful. This too is part of unity and fraternity Holy Rosary members have also readily demonstrated patriotism by joining the 4 th Degree and Seton Assembly. We have marched in parades and contributed to organization like SALUTE to support veterans.
GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE Our founder, The Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney, had a vision of a Council in every parish. I don t really know if he foresaw parishes established with in just a few miles of each other as we have today. Holy Rosary Council is affiliated with four parishes and I believe our increased participation in each of those parishes is critical to our mission and the council s survival. When I look out into this room, I don t see St. James Knights, St. Edna Knights, St. Collette Knights or Our Lady of the Wayside Knights. I see Holy Rosary Council Knights of Columbus. We as a council have a responsibility and duty to each of our parishes. I want to make sure that each Knight has the ability to serve their parish in a meaningful and productive way, and the council will provide all the parishes with the support in fulfillment of Fr. McGivney s vision. We are the strong right arm of the church. I want to thank my fellow officers for their dedication, trust and leadership. We are servant leaders and dedicated to the advancement of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Rosary Council. I ask a favor of you all, Please pray for me and your officers, that we act justly and fairly as catholic gentlemen in all our decisions, and we as a council uphold the traditions of our order with honor and dignity. Thank you for coming tonight to celebrate another chapter in the legacy of Holy Rosary Council. God Bless You and God Bless the United States of America and the Knights of Columbus. Grand Knight Ray Cordell Deputy Grand Knight s Report Brother Knights, We are embarking on another fraternal year and I am honored to serve as your Deputy Grand Knight. I look forward to a renewed spirit of Unity and Fraternity. I am excited about to helping our council in the role of the Charity Committee Chairman. Chaplain s Report With this being the July newsletter, I m sure many of you expected to read about Patriotism or Independence and, those are both great topics to speak and write about. Earlier this month I was visiting someone at Loyola Hospital and saw this Image of the Holy Trinity. This particular Icon is from the 11th or 12 th century and the comments on this work was that the faces of the Trinity are all the same. This was done to not only explain that there is one God in three persons but, that there is no distinction between the three. While we all have our visual images of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the great mystery and truth of our Catholic faith is that they are all one in the same and one true God. As I stared at the image I couldn t help but think of us as a council and how, as a council may have lost our sense of unity, of being one in faith, love and good works. We will always have our differences and as mature and responsible Catholic gentlemen we can and will resolve these differences for the good of the order and for the good of all. During these days or remembering our fight for independence and freedom, let us remember our history as a nation and as Christian people "E Pluribus Unum", "Out of many, one". A safe and blessed Holiday Deacon Joseph Yannotta Chancellor s Report If anyone has any ideas for fundraising events or for speakers for our social meetings, please contact me, Tom Reed.
