From Father Simon The most common decoration for Christmas is the tree. However, in India, almost all Christian homes put out a star - a sign to others that Christ is the light of the world and a reminder to Christians that they are to reflect the light of Christ through their words and works. The story of the Magi touches our Catholic imagination. We print it on Christmas cards, sing about it in carols; reenact it in pageants; and, today, celebrate it in liturgy. In some ways it symbolizes the journey each Christian must make. Three strange figures follow a star. Kings perhaps. Probably they are priest scientists from ancient Persia who observe movements of stars in the heavens. The ancient world regarded stars as signs of the supernatural; as capable of affecting human destiny. In any case, the Magi go on a journey. It leads them to Bethlehem and to the Christ child. The Magi take expensive gifts. They expect to meet someone of cosmic importance. Instead, they meet a poverty stricken child in a stable. Yet, the meeting is a moment of profound spiritual illumination. These givers of gifts are given a gift the gift of recognition. This child is both their destination and their destiny. He is the ONE they seek. He is the light of the world - the revelation of God to humankind. Gold, frankincense and myrrh pale into insignificance compared to this gift of recognition. The journey of the Magi is a journey from darkness to light, from ignorance to recognition, from material attachment to spiritual fulfillment, from doubt to faith. It is a journey of conversion. Each of us must make the same spiritual journey. Often we do not know exactly what we are looking for in life. As best we can, we seek authenticity and ultimate meaning. We follow our own interior lights and inspirations. But, ultimately, we know that we need to be enlightened by a light brighter than even our best intuitions. The feast of the Epiphany, coming as it does at the start of a new year, is an opportunity to direct our inner gaze on the Christ child and allow him to call us out of darkness into his own marvelous light, to be given the gift of recognition by the One who is the light of the world. The journey of the Magi continues in each Christian. Update on Construction Projects: The comprehensive renovation of the Benedict Center continues to be on schedule. Last week a crane was employed to lift up the rooftop units for air-conditioning. Ionia Avenue has been trenched for the new water connection that will feed the sprinkler system in the building. This work had to be done while the school was on a break. The old elevator has been decommissioned and removed and the shaft is being readied for a new elevator. The new windows are in, the framing completed on the second and third floors and we are awaiting an inspection before we proceed with insulation and drywall. The bell tower renovation has been shut down for the winter. We have sealed the flat roof area around the west side of the tower that was the source of water infiltration into the choir loft. We have also completed the through-wall flashing as well as some rebuild of the deteriorated brick structure. The major part of the work will resume in spring when the rest of the tower will be scaffolded. This will enable us to complete the project by fall. 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

Regarding the transepts - while working on the ceiling last year, we noticed that the marble on the side altars was cracked and deteriorated to the point that they could not be salvaged. When we removed the marble we noticed that the brick was damp. On further exploration we were advised to address the sources of the leak before we put back the marble. After receiving a scope of the work to be done from our structural engineers Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, I am happy to report to you that work on the east transept will begin this week. Fixing the roof leaks, tuck-pointing and removal and replacement of sealants will be part of this project. The work on the west transept will be done in spring. Only after we are satisfied that the water infiltration issues have been addressed will we then replace the marble that is already cut and ready to be installed. The sketch gives you an idea of the work that is being done. Blessings! The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019 3

f tewardship The Community of Queen of All Saints is committed to Christ, sharing God s gifts and building the Church together, through word, worship and service. Epiphany of our Lord January 6, 2019 the Gen les are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. (Ephesians 3:6) Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He has given each of us unique gi s. We all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Pray daily and ask God how He wants you to use your gi s so that we may all be one. Stewardship in the New Year The start of a new year is a great me for us to take another look at our support of our parish. Commi ng to stewardship of me, talent, and treasure is an important part of living a Chris an life, and real Chris an living asks a lot of us and is not easy. Making a commitment to stewardship is a serious challenge with today s emphasis on materialism, the me genera on, taking care of ourselves before others, and focusing on wants instead of mee ng needs. It is important to invest in our rela onship with God and recommit ourselves to the life of a good steward by making a promise of our me, talent and treasure for the coming year. In order to do that, we must enter into our decision to give inten onally, plan to make good on the decision we make, and budget our me, talent and treasure so our gi s are propor onate to what we have been given. As we decide on our personal giving decisions, let s keep this in mind: Inten onal If we give just because, that is not inten onal. That does not show understanding of our call to stewardship. As a steward, we make a deliberate decision to live out the Chris an life in a certain way. That way is to thank God for all His blessings by returning to Him a por on of our me, talent and treasure. December 13 to 19, 2018 Sunday Stewardship Dona on Type Amount Users Envelopes $20,454.77 513 Loose Dona ons $3,002.00 n/a Electronic Giving $5,643.00 144 Total $29,099.77 YTD Total $680,769.44 December 20 to 26, 2018 Sunday Stewardship Dona on Type Amount Users Envelopes $19,490.00 478 Loose Dona ons $3,723.00 n/a Electronic Giving $5,465.00 131 Total $28,678.00 YTD Total $709,447.44 Planned As with any life event, we must make plans and adjustments to ensure important things take place. This is true in our sacrificial giving as well. We must plan ahead and make stewardship of me, talent and treasure part of our lifestyle and budget. Propor onate In biblical thing, a percentage of one s income is given back in gra tude to charitable causes. But a the applies only to financial gi s. In stewardship, an inten- onal decision is made to give a certain percentage of one s me, talents and one s income. This expands the the to what it should be propor onate giving of ALL gi s. Benedict Center Construc on Progress Please consider adding a pledge, or increasing your current pledge, to our campaign. Contact our business office at 773.736.6060 for further informa on. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not just a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him or her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age may properly receive this sacrament. The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019 9
