PRELUDE WELCOME STEWARDSHIP FOCUS 2 Ann Crocker INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Kneel as you are able, or remain seated P: Heavenly Father, C: I cannot deny that I sin every day, in spite of my best efforts to stop. Help me to see the only remedy for my sin: the cross of your beloved Son, and to cling to that remedy with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. P: The Almighty and merciful God grants you forgiveness of all your sins for the sake of Christ Jesus, and freely gives you his Holy Spirit so that you may walk in faith and newness of life. C: Amen; thanks be to God! Stand PEACE P: We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1) May this peace be with you all. C: And also with you. All are free to move about and share God s peace HYMN: God of Grace and God of Glory LBW #415 1. God of grace and God of glory, On your people pour your pow r; Crown your ancient church's story, Bring its bud to glorious flow r.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the facing of this hour, For the facing of this hour. 2. Lo! the hosts of evil round us Scorn the Christ, assail his ways! From the fears that long have bound us Free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the living of these days, For the living of these days. 3. Cure your children's warring madness; Bend our pride to your control; Shame our wanton, selfish gladness, Rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Lest we miss your kingdom's goal, Lest we miss your kingdom's goal. 4. Save us from weak resignation To the evils we deplore; Let the gift of your salvation Be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Serving you whom we adore, Serving you whom we adore. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you P: Let us pray. Almighty God, King of Creation C: help us always to remember that the wages of sin is death; and to believe and proclaim that death which 3

destroys sin the death of your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom we cling in faith, until our faith is met with sight in your glorious kingdom. Amen Be Seated FIRST LESSON: Numbers 11:10-17 R: The first lesson is from Numbers, the 11 th chapter. 10 Moses heard the people weeping throughout their clans, everyone at the door of his tent. And the anger of the Lord blazed hotly, and Moses was displeased. 11 Moses said to the Lord, Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? 12 Did I conceive all this people? Did I give them birth, that you should say to me, Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing child, to the land that you swore to give their fathers? 13 Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me and say, Give us meat, that we may eat. 14 I am not able to carry all this people alone; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If you will treat me like this, kill me at once, if I find favor in your sight, that I may not see my wretchedness. 16 Then the Lord said to Moses, Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. 17 And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone. R: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God 4

SECOND LESSON: James 5:13-20 R: The second lesson is from James, the 5 th chapter. 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. R: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God CHILDREN S MESSAGE Stand GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 9:38-50 P: The Holy Gospel, according to St. Mark, the 9 th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord 38 John said to him, Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us. 39 But Jesus said, Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty 5

work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward. 42 Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. P: The Gospel of our Lord C: Praise to you, O Christ Be Seated SERMON Stand HYMN: Take My Life that I May Be LBW #406 1. Take my life that I may be Consecrated, Lord, to thee. Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise. 6

2. Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of thy love. Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for thee. 3. Take my voice and let me sing, Always, only for my King. Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from thee. 4. Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I withhold. Take my intellect and use Ev ry pow r as thou shalt choose. 5. Take my will and make it thine, It shall be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is thine own, It shall be thy royal throne. 6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour At thy feet its treasure store. Take myself and I will be Ever, only, all for Thee. APOSTLES CREED P: Together with the saints of all times and places, we confess the one, true faith, using the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He 7

descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Be Seated PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH OFFERING Stand OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray. God, Creator and Owner of all things; C: help us to give freely and confidently to the work of your Church, trusting that your hand is guiding it all, and that you will abundantly provide whatever we need; through Christ our Lord. Amen THE LORD S SUPPER WORDS OF INSTITUTION LORD S PRAYER Be Seated DISTRIBUTION Stand POST-COMMUNION BLESSING ANNOUNCEMENTS BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift his countenance upon you and give you peace; in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 8

C: Amen HYMN: Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise 1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. LBW #526 2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love. 3. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small, In all life thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish, but naught changeth thee. 4. Thou reignest in glory, thou dwellest in light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; All laud we would render; oh help us to see 'Tis only the splendor of light hideth thee! DISMISSAL P: We go in peace, to fear God, love God, and trust God. C: He is to be feared and loved, and He can be trusted. Amen POSTLUDE 9
