Christ Lutheran News October, 2016 Pumpkin Prayer Dear Jesus, As I carve my pumpkin, help me pray this prayer: Open my mind so I can learn about You; (Cut the top off the pumpkin) Know that the Lord is God. Psalm 100:3 Take all my sin and forgive the wrong that I do. (Clean out the inside.) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us. 1 John 1:9 Open my eyes so Your love I will see; (Cut eyes shaped like hearts.) Open my eyes that I may see, wondrous things from your law. Psalm 119:18 I m sorry for times I ve turned up my nose at what You ve given to me. (Cut a nose in the shape of a cross.) Create in me a clean heart O God. Psalm 51:10 Open my ears so Your Word I will hear; (Cut ears shaped like the Bible.) Incline your ear and come to Me Isaiah 55:3 Open my mouth to tell others You re near. (Cut a mouth in the shape of a fish.) declare the works of the Lord. Psalm 119:18 Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen. (put a candle inside and light it.) (Jesus said) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven Matthew 5:16 Ask God to fill you up so He can shine brightly through you. Share your faith with your friends and neighbors as you tell them about your special pumpkin! We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Ted s Desk... You have heard of this hope (laid up for you in heaven) before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the first day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. ~Colossians 1:4-6 as people face their own coming death, or as they mourn the death of their family members. You would see the comfort that a Christian funeral and that lunch time afterwards brings to those who mourn. You would see a group of faithful women who meet regularly to make discarded material into beautiful quilts to be given away some as a gift of love to our graduates, some to local people in need, and others to Lutheran World Relief to provide warmth, shelter, and privacy to people in a refugee camp. In his missionary journeys, the Apostle Paul had the privilege of seeing the larger picture of the growth of the Christian Church. He saw the Gospel bearing and growing in the whole world, and he told the Christians at Colossae that he could see it has been bearing fruit among yourselves Sunday morning worship is an important time for us as Christians as we gather as a community, hear God s Word, and share in the sacraments. That time, though, gives only a small glimpse of the work of the Church in our community and throughout the world, and you might wonder how important your offerings are, and for what they are used. I wish that you all could go with me and Pastor Dawn and see some of the ways that the Gospel is bearing fruit among yourselves. You would see over 70 children in our Sunday School, learning about the God who loves us and came to us through Jesus Christ. You would see the 41 students in Grades 7-9 studying the basics of the faith in a deeper way as they prepare for Confirmation. You would have seen the energy of 100+ students at Vacation Bible School this summer, and heard their voices as they belted out some newer songs of faith. You would hear the stories of faith from our shut-ins who care deeply about the Church, though they can rarely attend worship, and hear how they appreciate your prayers and visits. You would see the life-changing ministry of summer Bible Camp at Shetek Lutheran Ministries as children spend time outdoors with caring, Christian young adults thinking about their faith. And you might see couples preparing to be married, or seniors coming to be Road Scholars, or any of the other retreat offerings at the camp. You would see people serving faithfully on our various ministry Boards and Church Council to plan and implement the ministry of our congregation. And, if you went with us to Synod Assembly or other gatherings of the larger Church, you would hear about the partnership that we have with others in the Gospel. You d hear of the new congregation in Hutchinson, and the mission start in Montrose, MN. You d hear about the people preparing at Luther Seminary to be leaders of the Church in the future and some getting their first exposure to rural ministry at Shalom Hilll Farm. You d hear about our partnership with the Lutheran Church in South Africa, and plans to visit there next year. Yes, it can still be said that the Gospel is growing and bearing fruit throughout the world, and in our own community of faith. Thank you for your gift of time, the use of your talents, and your faithful offerings that help to make these things, and so many other ministries of the Church, possible. In Christ s love, Pastor Ted Kunze You would see the hope that Christ s victory over death brings 4 5

Women of Christ Lutheran Church Parish Nurse Ministry Our Mission: To mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. October Visitation: Faith Make Your Illness Count I never like it when I am sick., but I suppose no one LIKES to be sick. We don t like how illness makes us feel, we don t like how it limits our energy or what we can accomplish. We all deal with it during our lifetime, some illnesses more serious and miserable than others, but we all get ill. Bible Study Leaders Thursday, October 6 at 5:15 pm Peace Circle Wednesday, October 12 at 9:30 am Bible Study Leader Laurel Nelson Hostess Lorna Bader Faith Circle Wednesday, October 12 at 1:30 pm Bible Study Leader Ruthie Nelson Hostess Alice Beattie Love Circle Monday, October 10 at 7:00 pm Bible Study Leader Marcia Kunze Hostess Carolyn Gillette Quilting Monday, October 24 and Tuesday, October 25 at 1:00 pm I have just read a book that says we should Make Your Illness Count written by Dr. Vernon Bittner, a Chaplain. It has made me look at illness a little differently. Dr. Bittner says that when you accept your illness, you accept that you are human and have limitations. Then you can move forward and move beyond the negative and anger and the fear that goes with illness to focusing on joy and service and love. Illness can help us realize we don t live forever on this earth and can help us grow in our relationship with God, the one who called us by name in Baptism. It can remind us that our value comes from being a child of God. We are valued just for being who we are, not in what we can accomplish. An illness can be an opportunity for growth. So think positively about your illness, it can bring you closer to your Lord and make your time here on earth more meaningful. II Corinthians 12:9: My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Handmade Greeting Cards are available in the Library for $1 each. Proceeds will go to WCLC. 16 17

Prayer Requests Has something come up in your life recently that you want your church to pray about? Perhaps you have received some difficult news. Or, maybe you have a reason to rejoice and you want to share this good news. Regardless of what your concern is, we want to hear from you and pray with and for you. Whether your concern is personal or a shared concern about something happening in the world, please communicate to us your concerns and prayer requests. Please be sure to indicate if this is something you want included in the more public church prayers of intercession, one of the church prayer chains or if this is a more private concern that you only want to share with the pastors. We will honor your specific request. You may make prayer requests by speaking with one of the pastors, or, if it is during the week, to the church office secretary, Dawn Mouw. If your concern arises over the weekend, you may give your written prayer request to an usher and ask them to pass it along to a pastor. This is especially helpful if there is late-breaking world or community news. As the pastors prepare for worship and lead services at Faith before coming to Christ Lutheran they may not be on top of the latest news. Thank you for helping us to be a community that lifts one another s concerns to God in prayer.
