Page 1 Volume 11 ~ Issue 8 Counting Blessings Jeff Bender, Community Lay Director August is here, and that means football is just around the corner. The NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremonies were the weekend of August 6 th -9 th. I usually don t watch speeches, but I am a Steelers fan. Jerome Bettis (aka The Bus) was being inducted, so I DVR d the ceremony and listened to the speeches. I was happy to hear the speakers reference the Bible and make constant references to being blessed. The Bus story was particularly filled with blessings that changed his life. I suspect each of us can identify people and events that were such blessings that it changed our lives. My list would specifically include my family members, coaches, friends, and events (including the Emmaus Walk). My list includes what one would call negative reinforcement. For instance, my kidney disease led me to assess my priorities and focus my energies. While it is not a good thing to be at 20% functioning today, my overall condition (especially my heart) compared to my male ancestors at my age is significantly better. When thinking of all the twist and turns, it becomes obvious that God has blessed me so much it is mind boggling. God s understanding truly is beyond my feeble attempts guide my way. So, I thank God for the many blessings that He has bestowed upon me. I especially thank God for the Walk to Emmaus. It has been a tremendous blessing to serve in whatever capacity as God s hands and feet. Equally, it has been a blessing to serve with and serve the wonderful members of our community. De Colores, Jeff Bender Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings see what God has done; Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count you many blessings see what God has done!!

Page 2 Nuts and Bolts Jeff Bender, Community Lay Director As everyone should know by now, the board meetings and gatherings are at The Plains United Methodist Church. The next meeting/gathering is August 30 th. The Board meeting is at 2:00 p.m. and the gathering at 3:00 p.m. The meeting/schedule for the rest of the year is September 27 th, November 1 st, and December 6 th (Christmas Party). The Women s Walk is September 17-20 and the Men s Walk is October 22-25 th. Education Day is November 14 th at The Plains UMC. However, not everyone likely knows that we have established a connection with Chrysalis Cares. Their next Chrysalis Flight is the girls flight in February, 2016. The boys flight is in June, 2016. If they get the turnout that they did for the girls flight in 2015, then they are considering a second girls flight around Labor Day next year. The flights take place at Stonybrook UMC in Gahanna. They will take youth as young as 14 and a freshman in High School. If you have a youth to sponsor, our board can make the connection or you can go to www.chrysaliscares.org for an application. De Colores, Jeff Bender Prayer Vigils Emma Hockenbery, Community Worship The prayer vigil's are online for the Women's and Men's Walk. Search for Southern Ohio Emmaus and you will be able to sign up for a time slot...or two :) They will also be at the August 30 th gathering. De Colores!!! Please update your information if it has changed in the past year. Send to rbharkless@yahoo.com Something to think about God s Law is perfect. It is His tool to convert the soul. When a sinner is confronted with God s Holy Law, his conscience affirms its truth. The Law makes wise the simple by giving understanding to the unregenerate mind. It reveals God s true and righteous judgments and therefore produces the fear of God, leading to repentance. It is of great worth. It is sweet to the converted soul. Its function is to warn sinners of the wrath to come and lead them to shelter in the Savior. Psalm 19:7-11
