10:45 Orders of Worship September 14, 2014 (See a separate bulletin for 6:30 & 8:30) Today is Holy Cross Day. This festival, which originated in the fourth century, celebrates the triumph of the cross. Paul reminds us that Christ crucified is the power and wisdom of God. As Moses put a serpent on a pole to be a source of healing for the Israelites, we lift high the cross as the sign of our health and salvation. Each time we make the sign of the cross we remember our baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ. Helena, mother of Roman Emperor Constantine, made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and found what may be the actual site of Jesus' crucifixion. Her son built two churches there, and the dedication of one of them gave rise to this celebration of our Lord's victory on the cross. ANTHEM The Shepherd Medley - arr. Camp Kirkland The Trinity Brass Ron Marenchin, director Mark Koehler, piano A medley of Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us - William Bradbury Gentle Shepherd - William and Gloria Gaither Shepherd of Love - John W. Peterson Oh How He Loves You and Me - Kurt Kaiser + + + WORD + + + God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song. FIRST READING Numbers 21:4b-9 Pew Bible, OT pg. 154 From Mount Hor the Israelites set out, 4b But the people became impatient on the way. 5 The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food." 6 Then the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD to take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live." 9 So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 98:1-4 Sung responsively Tone 7 1Sing a new song to the LORD, who has done marvelous things, whose right hand and holy arm have won the victory. 2O LORD, you have made known your victory, you have revealed your righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3You remember your steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 4Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; lift up your voice, re- joice, and sing. SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 1:18-24 Pew Bible, NT pg. 173 4
18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23 but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, Alleluia pg. 151 *GOSPEL John 3:13-17 Pew Bible, NT pg. 96 The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said: 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated SERMON A CURE FOR SNAKE BITE Pastor Jeff Messner HYMN OF THE DAY Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus 5
APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, 6
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION After each portion of the prayers: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. OFFERING God So Loved the World - Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), arr. The prayers conclude either: For your Word of life, O God, we give you thanks and praise. or:...be honor and glory forever. Amen. *LORD S PRAYER pg. 145 7
