St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Denton, Texas Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost October 14, 2018, 10:30 a.m. Hearing devices and large print Bibles and hymnals are available. Ask an usher. Gathering around God s Word Prelude Fanfare Jacques Lemmens Welcome and Announcements Please sign the Ritual of Friendship pad in the pews. Ringing of the Bell Gianna Haddad Call to Worship Adapted from Psalm 22 Here in this great gathering for worship I have discovered reasons to sing God s praises. And I have made promises that I will fulfill. Down-and-outers sit at God s table and eat their fill. Everyone on the hunt for God is here, praising God. Future generations will be told about the Lord, They will proclaim God s deliverance to a people yet unborn. Opening Prayer Lisa Patterson *Hymn 399 God Welcomes All (2X) themba amen Prayer of Confession (unison) Generous, gift-giving God, we confess our lack of generosity. Even as we experience your generosity of grace, we judge others harshly with little grace shown. We celebrate the generous gifts you give us, and then hoard them so we do not have to share with others. We see the poor in spirit and do not offer a word of hope; we see the poor in material wealth, yet do not share with them. Forgive us our greedy, uncharitable ways and transform us into people with generous hearts. In Christ s name, we pray. Amen (Time of silent confession). Sung Response Lamb of God Hymn 604 Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us (2X). Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us peace; grant us peace. Declaration of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Summary of the Law (Adapted from Matthew 22: 37-40) Our Lord Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

*Sung Response Goodness Is Stronger than Evil Hymn 750 Goodness is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death. Victory is ours; victory is ours, through God who loves us. Oh, victory is ours, victory is ours, through God who loves us. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Presentation of Tithes & Offerings Offertory *Doxology Hymn 609 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. The Sacrament of Baptism for Jacob Thomas Green Son of Natalie and Keith Green October 14, 2018 Words of Preparation Hear the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. In baptism, we are graced with a new beginning. Baptism is a sign and seal of God s covenant of grace still with us today. In baptism we are engrafted into the family of God. It is a relationship that endures for a lifetime and beyond. In baptism we are marked as Christ s own; it is a visible sign of God s continuing faithfulness and proclamation of our intention to dwell in covenant with God and one another. Let us remember with joy our own baptism as we celebrate this sacrament. Presentation of Jacob Thomas Green Elder Marissa Glasschroeder: On behalf of this congregation and its Session, we present Jacob Thomas Green to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Natalie and Keith, do you desire that Jacob be baptized? Questions for the Congregation In receiving this child of God, do we as members of the body of Christ, on behalf of the church universal, promise to guide and teach Jacob so that one day he may confess Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior? Do we promise to nurture him with love and prayer and encourage him to know and follow Christ and be a faithful member of Christ s church? Questions for the Parents Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior? Relying on God s grace, do you promise to live the Christian faith and to teach that faith to Jacob? *Profession of Faith (Apostles Creed) Hymnal page 35 Prayer Over the Water of Baptism Baptism Who stands with this child? Jacob Thomas, child of the covenant, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Welcome Ministers introduce Jacob to the congregation. Elder Marissa Glasschroeder: We have just received Jacob into the one holy catholic and apostolic church through baptism. God has reaffirmed the covenant made to Abraham and made to us in baptism. People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome Jacob into Christ s church, and we reaffirm our own baptismal vows, committing ourselves to the service of God. Sing first verse of Jesus Loves Me.

*Hymn 549 May the Love of the Lord soon ti *Benediction *Postlude Bold Text indicates congregational participation. *Those who are able are asked to stand. The flowers in the chancel are given to the glory of God and in celebration of Robert Hankins 80 th birthday. Wills Blosser is serving as acolyte this morning. St. Andrew sends the following team to the Houston area for hurricane relief: Adele & Bob Stewart, Susan & Steve Danbom, Diana & Kim Warner, Carolyn Wilson, Marc Brown, Roger Lewis, Todd Lewis, Leslie & Richard Culp, and Lisa Patterson. Youth Worship Bellringer Orientation: New Ringers Welcome! As we gather each Sunday morning, a member of the St. Andrew Youth invites us to focus our hearts and minds on worship by ringing a handbell three times. We are very grateful to our youth ringers for this meaningful service! We invite new volunteers from grades 6 through high school, as well as adult volunteers, to join the group. No previous bellringing experience is needed: if you can shake hands, you can ring the bell! A 15-minute orientation for both returning and new ringers will be held in the sanctuary after the worship service on Sunday, October 21. This will cover technique, timing, and new procedures for 2018-19. For questions, or to request one-on-one training at a different time, contact Emily Hagen: emily. june.hagen@gmail.com. Presbyterian Women Please join us on Tuesday, October 16 at 9:30am in the Parlor as we welcome The Reverend Angie Mabry-Nauta, Development Officer for the Presbyterian Pan-American School. This dynamic speaker will share the remarkable story of PPAS with an overview of this Texas school s 106 year history and an update on current programs. Commitment Sunday Reminder Next week you will receive a letter from the Annual campaign committee along with a pledge card. We will dedicate the pledge cards in worship on Sunday, October 21, 2018. Jordan Foundation of Yoga Room 207/209, 6:30pm Jennifer Kepke Give a Meal a Month September Results September was our second highest month for donations this year. The congregation donated $135 and Circle #1 gave $71. With our donation of 103 pounds of food and a total monetary donation of $206, we provided 92 people with food for a week. So far this year, St. Andrew has fed 496 people for a week. Remember, just $2.29 or 54 pounds of food feeds one person for a week. Keep up the good work everyone! Food Fact #1: Fresh food items are alluring, but they may stay good for only a day or two, while the frozen versions can last pretty much indefinitely. Plus, freezing has improved over the past few decades so frozen foods may be better quality than fresh foods. Food Fact #2: Store yogurt, eggs, and milk on an interior shelf, not in the door where temps are the highest. Food Fact #3: Give milk the sniff test! Sell by dates are not based on any safety test. Most are just manufacturers suggestions for quality. If you pitch things whose dates say they ve just expired, you re probably throwing away foods that are perfectly fine to eat. October Give-a-Meal $2.29 A monetary donation of $2.29 feeds a person in need for a week. Donations can be made in your weekly offering, online, or in the church office. Please write Give-a-Meal-a-Month on the envelope or check. If you would prefer to purchase food, suggested items are: (Basic Needs Month - Your Pick) Macaroni and Cheese, Tuna, Peanut Butter, Canned Fruit, Canned Vegetables, Dried Beans, Rice, Soup, Tomatoes, Tomato Sauce, Spaghetti and Canned Sauce Optional: Cereal, Coffee, Dry Milk, Cooking Oil Please return your non-perishable donations for the Denton Community Food Center to the collection bin in the hallway near Fellowship Hall. Welcome! We proclaim that ALL people are created in the image of God and affirm that each person is a beloved child of God, worthy of God s love and grace. We welcome all, celebrating our differences while finding unity in Christ. No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. Join us in the Narthex following worship so that we can get acquainted. If you wish to join St. Andrew today, please speak to one of the ministers. Children s Chapel During the worship service, children ages three years through kindergarten go to chapel immediately following the Children s Sermon. The Ten Best Ways Jessie and Will Hooper Godly Play seeks to tell the stories of the faith so that children hear and remember these stories and become engaged in them. It also provides a place and opportunities for children to begin exploring the purpose and meaning of worship. Parents may come upstairs to the Children s Chapel to pick children up following the worship service.
