January 28, 2018 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time V i s i t S t. R o s e a t w w w. s t r o s e a n t h e m. c o m GOSPEL MEDITATION - FINDING DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the Scribes. Those gathered in the synagogue where Jesus taught had never heard anything like this before. They were used to the preaching of the well-educated scribes, but Jesus possessed something that those men lacked: authority. Instead of merely interpreting the laws of the prophets, Jesus presented a new vision, indeed, he shared the good news of the Gospel with his listeners. We do not have the opportunity to stand in the presence of Jesus in the same way that those first-century Jews did, but nonetheless we can also stand in awe of his authority. His teachings are available to us through the sacred Scriptures that the Church has preserved and through the sacred tradition that the Church carries on. And in a Special way, Christ s authority continues to inspire and guide us through the ministries of the papacy, episcopacy, and Priesthood that Jesus established on our behalf while he was yet on earth. As Catholics, we have a special share in the astonishing authority of Jesus through the hierarchy of the Church, Although this structure is often misunderstood or misinterpreted, it is actually an authority rooted in service and modeled After Christ who told his apostles, The greatest among you must be your servant. (Mt. 23:11) The humble exercise of authority is contrary to the worldly search for power. And whenever we find ourselves In a position of authority, we too should strive to lead and direct others in the true spirit of Christian love and service. Chances are, if we truly imitate Christ in this way, people will be astonished at what they see. LIVE THE LITURGY Jesus had a way of amazing the crowds. There was something very different about not only what he taught but how he taught it. He brought an authority to what he said that gave it a credibility that was not experienced elsewhere. His words were not only prophetic but rang true to the experience of the people, especially those who were poor, marginalized, victimized, lost, or forgotten. Do Jesus words ring true to you? The Gospel message transcends time and space and has a profound relevancy in every generation. Jesus is still trying to point us toward our truth and have us see and accept who we are in God. Are you ready to hear this? We are asked to bring credibility to this same Gospel message by how we live our lives. Discipleship Pg.5 The Rosary: Who, What, Why, How & When The Rosary is a meditative prayer that implores our Blessed Mother to intercede for us with her Son, our savior Jesus Christ. The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops says the Rosary is at heart of Christocentric prayer and it has all the depth of the Gospel message in its entirely. At Fatima, Mary implored the world to pray the rosary daily to help People return to her Son and for world peace. The rosary is all about unity and peace. It s meditative, in that it repeats common prayers ( Our Father, Hail Mary & Glory Be ) while meditating on one of the four Sets of ten mysteries of Christ s life and ministry ( e.g. Christ s Birth, the Transfiguration, the Crucifixion, etc. ). The Repetition allows one to pray the prayers while being immersed in the mystery s grace. The Rosary can be said privately or communally and it is especially powerful when prayed as a family. In 1941, Venerable Father Patrick Peyton started the Family Rosary Crusade (http://www.familyrosary.org) in building and sustaining healthy and holy families. The family that prays together, stays together. Here at St. Rose and Good Shepherd, we gather 30 minutes before every weekday and weekend Mass ( except Sunday At 4pm) to say the Rosary as a community. All are invited to participate. If you have never said the Rosary before, We have guides available in the vestibule. You can also find several online resources such as the United States Catholic Conference of Bishop site ( http://bit.ly/strose_rosary ) and even free Catholic apps like Laudate ( available For Apple & Android ). Bring one of these guides and come pray with your parish family, What better time than during our Stewardship of Prayer season, to discover, or rediscover, one of the most powerful Catholic prayers. Try it weekly ( or daily) as a family; it will transform you, your family and the world! WWW.STROSEANTHEM.COM Pg. 6 LAUGH OUT LOUD If God is watching us, the least we can do is be entertaining. Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) Feast Day January 28th St. Thomas Aquinas was an Italian Dominican Friar, Catholic Priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was the foremost classical proponent of Natural theology and the father of Thomism: of which he argued that reason is found in God. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, Natural law, metaphysics, and political theory. Unlike many currents in the Church of the time, Thomas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle -whom he called the Philosopher and attempted to synthesize Aristotelian Philosophy with the principles of Christianity. The Catholic Church honors Thomas Aquinas as a saint and regards him as the model teacher for those studying for the priesthood. Thomas Aquinas is considered one of the Catholic Church s greatest theologians and Philosophers. Quotes Antheism is a non-prophet organization. If God is your copilot, swap seats.
