In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude Come Holy Spirit Johann Sebastian Bach Words of Welcome Choral Call to Worship Adoration The Reverend Pen Peery arnsberg God, reveal your presence; gladly we adore you, and with awe appear before you. Holy is your temple; all within keep silence; humbly bow with deepest reverence. You alone now we own as our God and Savior. Praise your name forever. *Hymn No. 33 Praise the Lord, God s Glories Show llanfair Litany of Confession Confession The Reverend Chuck Williamson One: I confess to Almighty God, and before this congregation, that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed: not loving God, nor caring for creation, nor respecting God s people. I admit my failures and seek God s pardon. All: May God forgive you, Christ befriend you, and the Holy Spirit renew and change your life. One: Amen.

The Litany of Confession is adapted from the Iona Community in Scotland. Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. All: We confess to Almighty God, and to you, that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed: not loving God, nor caring for creation, nor respecting God s people. We admit our failures and seek God s pardon. One: May God forgive you, Christ befriend you, and the Holy Spirit renew and change your life. All: Amen. One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation Scripture Acts 2:43-47 pew Bible pg. 120 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Time with Children Children in kindergarten through 2nd grade may leave for First Church. They will return to the sanctuary during the last hymn. Younger children may go to the nursery. It is grace, nothing but grace that we are allowed to live in community with Christian brothers and sisters. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer The Nicene Creed, originally adopted in the year 325, is the most widely shared statement of belief in the worldwide church. We use this creed on Sundays when we share the sacrament of communion in order to remember our unity in Christ with Christians of every denomination. Scripture Luke 24:13-35 pew Bible pg. 90 Meditation Life Together The Reverend Pen Peery *Hymn No. 252 Day of Arising raabe Choir sings first stanza. Congregation joins for stanzas two through four. Response *Affirmation of Faith Nicene Creed (Ecumenical) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Reverend Chuck Williamson The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9, this morning and streamed live at www.firstpres-charlotte.org. Offertory Anthem On Emmaus Journey John Ferguson Who are you who walk in sorrow down Emmaus barren road, hearts distraught and hope defeated, bent beneath grief s load? Nameless mourners, we will join you, we who also mourn our dead. We have stood by graves unyielding, eaten death s bard, bitter bread. Who is this who joins our journey, walking with us stride by stride? Unknown Stranger, can you fathom depths of grief for one who died? Then the wonder! When we told you how our dreams to dust have turned, Then you opened wide Scriptures till our hearts within us burned! Who are you who breaks the bread? Christ the victim, now the victor, living, risen from the dead! Great Companion on our journey, still surprise us with your grace! Make each day a new Emmaus; on our hearts your image trace! Who are we who travel with you on our way through life to death? Women, men, the young, the aging, wakened by the Spirit s breath! At the font you claim and name us, born of water and the Word. At the table still you feed us, host us as our Risen Lord! Alleluia! is the Easter hymn we sing! Take our life, our joy, our worship as the gift of love we bring. You have formed us all one people called from ev ry land and race. Make your church your servant Body, sent to share your healing grace! Invitation to the Table The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper The Great Thanksgiving One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name. The anthem follows today s Gospel reading and outlines the progression from sorrow and mourning on the Emmaus road to joy and gladness when Jesus is revealed in the breaking of bread. The rosebud in the sanctuary celebrates the birth of Lily Kathryn Cook, daughter of Susannah and Trevor Cook. Sanctus No. 552 land of rest Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. Prayers of the People and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Words of Institution The Bread and the Cup The congregation is invited to partake of the communion elements as they are served. Age to age, God s mercies trace, Alleluia! Praise God s providence and grace! Alleluia! *Hymn No. 252 Day of Arising 1 Day of arising, Christ on the roadway, unknown companion walks with his own. When they invite him, as fades the first day, and bread is broken, Christ is made known. 2 When we are walking, doubtful and dreading, blinded by sadness, slowness of heart, yet Christ walks with us, ever awaiting our invitation: Stay, do not part. 3 Lo, I am with you, Jesus has spoken. This is Christ s promise, this is Christ s sign: when the church gathers, when bread is broken, there Christ is with us, in bread and wine. 4 Christ, our companion, hope for the journey, bread of compassion, open our eyes. Grant us your vision, set all hearts burning that all creation with you may rise. *Hymn No. 65 1 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but thou art mighty. Hold me with thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more; feed me till I want no more. Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah 2 Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow. Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield; be thou still my strength and shield. 3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death, and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to thee; I will ever give to thee.
