SIDROT, SITES AND SOURCES A SHORT SERIES LINKING ISRAEL AND THE PARASHA OF THE WEEK Tazria-Metzorah Shaarei Tzedek Medical Centre This week s sidra begins with the laws surrounding the birth of children and it - not unnaturally leads us to look at one of Israel s foremost medical institutions dealing with pre- and post-natal conditions, Shaarei Tzedek Medical Centre. Opened originally in what was then a state of the art facility in Jaffa Road Jerusalem (in the presence of the Turkish Governor, Chief Rabbi and German Consul) the hospital became famous for its work with expectant mothers and babies, as well as general medical cases. This continued with the move to a new location close to Mount Herzl and Bayit Vegan some 30 years ago. As well as being the most centrally located major hospital in Jerusalem, with a new department of Emergency Medicine recently opened, it also houses a unique Woman and Infant Centre and the largest neonatal intensive care unit in Jerusalem, dealing with upwards of 1000 births every year. For those wanting to stay near loved ones over Shabbat and Chagim, there is even a nine bedroom mini hotel and the hospital s 95 seat synagogue is a well-used facility for patients, visitors and staff alike. With an international staff and patient roster, the hospital can offer interpreting in almost 40 languages, from Norwegian to Mandarin!
