November 4 is the feast day of our parish patron, St Charles Borromeo. So we will celebrate his day all this weekend. Although he lived in the sixteenth century, the circumstances of his time and of our time are very much alike. Charles was the cardinal-archbishop of Milan; he had to implement the teachings of the Council of Trent, much in the way that we continue to live out the expectations of the Second Vatican Council in our day. Both Councils called for a renewed appreciation for the liturgy of the Church the way we worship. Both Councils called for an emphasis on proper education of the laity; in our day we are calling for a new evangelization. It was Charles who first established religious education classes for children. Charles also designed the rigorous seminary training now required of the clergy. Although born to a noble and influential family as well as achieving high rank in the Church, Charles never forgot that he was like all other Christians and that God would require more from those who had been given more. Charles was a hands on bishop, much in the mold of Pope Francis s model who has the smell of the sheep in his care. Charles always emphasized the corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, care for the sick Our parish--that bears St Charles s name--fittingly has a proud tradition of basic, old-fashioned charity. The windows in our Merici Chapel were a gift from Bishop Pilla twenty years ago; they portray twelve events from the life of Charles Borromeo. Those windows were once in the Oratory of the former Borromeo High School; they are true works of art and we are blessed to have them. St Charles Borromeo! Pray for us! There is a St Charles Day Pancake Breakfast after the 8:00am and 10:00am Sunday Masses today. A great meal at a reasonable price in the Lower Parish Hall. See you there! The days are shorter and cooler, the clocks have gone back, and the Scripture readings at Mass tell us of the final things. What a fitting time of the year to offer a workshop on final life decisions and funeral planning. This Wednesday, November 8, from 7:00 till 8:30pm in the Lower Parish Hall we will offer Of Last Things. Topics to be covered will include hospice care, use of extraordinary means to extend life, wills, durable power of attorney for health care, funeral rites, and burial planning. I ll deal with pastoral questions, Attorney Joseph McCafferty will handle legal issues and representatives from Catholic Cemeteries will answer your questions. Don t wait until the issues force themselves upon you; see you this Wednesday evening at 7:00pm. Our November Canned Food Drive continues all this month. Please check the article in this bulletin detailing the items we need the most for our St Charles SVdP Emergency Pantry and for Our Lady s Kitchen at Our Lady of Peace Church. Leave your gifts in the church lobbies at any time our church doors are open Monday to Friday, 6:00am to 8:00pm, Saturdays 7:00am to 6:00pm, and Sundays 7:00am to 7:00pm. And bring your gifts to our Thanksgiving Day Mass, Thursday, November 23, 9:30am! Parish Council meets this Thursday, November 9, at 7:45pm, John Paul II Room of the PAC.
