C o m m a n d e r s O u t l o o k With the coming of spring our thoughts turn to Elections, change of Command, new thoughts and new leadership. We will be holding Officer nominations at our April and May meeting. Elections will follow nominations at the May meeting. Probably the most important time of year and your most important duty as a member of The American Legion is to vote at these upcoming elections. It is up to you, the membership, to insure that we have the best possible people in place to run our Post. Another way to insure a good leadership is to run for office yourself. We have positions open with no one interested in running. Your Post needs you and your help. We all enjoy the functions that the Post provides but these functions and countless others that we have not begun to think of do not happen all by themselves. I also hear all the time from members which are not happy with the way things are done or how they are going. These are the people who need to step up and be counted. If your ideas are not heard until after the fact they can not be put into motion. I would make a personal challenge to any member of the Post that if your are not among those who have to make the decisions, don t complain to any Officer who is trying to make a difference by at least running for Office and making his voice and ideas heard. Don t forget, actions speak louder than words, so make a difference and step up to the plate. 1

T h e N e w s o n M e m b e r s h i p R o b e r t S h a f f n e r S r. V i c e C o m m a n d e r I have mailed out six continuous membership certificates to the following members of Post 615. Mr. Cyril A. Horky 75yrs membership, Mr. Samuel S. Stive 60yrs membership, Mr. Lloyd E. Brandau 50yrs membership, Mr. Patrick C. Gunnell 50yrs membership, Mr. Thaddeus Kush 50yrs membership, and Mr. Richard H. Morin 50yrs membership. All the members of Post 615 would like to thank you for your many years of service to the American Legion, and for your service to our country. Our post has reached a total of 474 members now on our roster. We have signed up 14 new members this year. I'm showing that 30 members have not paid their 2011 dues as of yet. I have sent out letters, post cards, and Joe Lepore has been making phone calls. So please lets get your dues paid. It behooves the post to get 100%. We also have some new people transferring into our post and we welcome you. I would like to thank Ron Seiner for the new members he has signed up so far this year; he has signed 6 of the 14 new members. I wish everyone a safe summer, and GOD BLESS AMERICA AND OUR TROOPS. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 615 Katrina Scheidler, President Happy Spring Ladies!! Today it was almost 90 degrees out and I m thinking of summer. However, it s just the beginning of spring and I need to readjust my thoughts to the upcoming functions. We cancelled the April meeting due to lack of participants, but we did get all the reports filled out. This year we have done a good job in fulfilling our monetary and community service obligations. Our organization relies on volunteers and the graciousness of our community. To keep up with the television theme of department this year, I will quote Star Trek. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. This is the basis of any organization like ours. Poppy Days are coming up on Friday, May 20 th and Saturday, May 21 st. Sign-up sheets will be at the post. We understand there are a lot of members who can t make meetings, and can t volunteer their time. However, to make this Poppy season shine, we are asking if you can send a donation to the post, please have it to us by May 19 th. Any amount is GREATLY appreciated!!!! Our Sunshine Lady, Lois Frietag is looking to complete her list of birthdays. We may be sending you a quick note to complete her information. If you would like some Sunshine added to your life, please send in your info. We re not concerned with age, but we do want to celebrate the fact you are here with us. Membership is Mandatory for our Auxiliary to function to its fullest. Please, if you have any dues to send in, or any questions about membership, get in touch with Deb Melchert. She s our Sergeant of Arms and our Membership Chairwoman. You can reach her by phone at 708-610-3398 or by email at mlchrt4@comcast.net. Nominations are coming up in May. If anyone is interested in running for an office, please attend our next meeting on May 4 th at 7 pm. This meeting will be a little longer than normal as we will be Draping the Charter in remembrance of members who have passed this year: Doris Johnson, Carol Jordan, and Margaret Mitchell. We thank these ladies for their years of service. Our Unit will join the Post in enjoying Memorial Day, serving our Veterans at our Post Picnic and celebrating our country on the Fourth of July. As always, if you have any wisdom to add or questions to ask, please feel free to contact me. You can reach me by mail through the Post, by phone at 708-785-7432 (please leave a message if you get voicemail), or by email at katscheidler@yahoo.com. Enjoy the renewal that spring brings, and take the time to smell the roses, walk barefoot in the grass, and dance in a warm spring rain. It does wonders for the soul. Katrina 3
