Missions It s time for school to start again and that means it s also time for the Backpack program. This program is designed to help feed children on the weekends during the school year. The guidance counselors from Enon, Marguerite Christian and Elizabeth Scott Elementary schools determine which children need some assistance. Our church along with other churches from the community provide food for this program throughout the school year. The following items are needed each week: Chef Boyardee cups, Vienna sausages, chicken and tuna kits, ramen noodle, mac and cheese cups, individual soup cups, fruit cups, applesauce, pudding cups, breakfast bars (no peanuts), pop-tarts, mini muffins, oatmeal packets, individual size snacks (no peanuts). If you would like to make a monetary donation instead please make your check payable to Bermuda Hundred UMC and in the check memo put backpack. We will begin the second week in September. Thank you to everyone who helps make this program possible! Your response to the school supply drive for Marguerite Christian Elementary was amazing! Our donations plus those of other churches should help sustain the supplies needed throughout the school year for students in need. Thanks to everyone for your support. As you know there is a lot of devastation in Texas from Hurricane Harvey. If you would like to help by giving a monetary donation, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is a safe organization and 100% of the monies will go towards helping the people of Texas. Please use the advance number 901670 when placing your donation online. When giving through our church with a check made out to Bermuda Hundred UMC, please place advance number 901670 or Hurricane Harvey Relief in the check memo. Please continue to keep the people of Texas and all of those affected by Hurricane Harvey in your prayers. Ann McNinch, Missions September 2017

Operation Christmas Child We have officially started up our Operation Christmas Child event for 2017, beginning with raising just over $146 towards shipping fees for our boxes! There are several ways to get involved with the shoebox ministry, including: 1. Pack a shoebox! Pick up a box downstairs in the fellowship hall and follow the instructions on the brochure inside the box. No liquids, candy, toothpaste, used items or war-related items, please. Make sure to include $9 to cover shipping of your box. 2. Donate money! Collect your spare change and add it to the collection boxes upstairs and downstairs or make a larger donation using the red envelopes located by the change containers. Checks can be made out to BHUMC with Operation Christmas Child noted in the memo section and placed in the collection plate or given to the office/jessica Mathis. Our goal is to collect at least $900 to cover shipping fees for 100 shoeboxes. 3. Donate your time! We will have a packing party with the youth group in mid-november and we will have opportunities to volunteer at the collection center (Crestwood Presbyterian Church) from November 13-20. 4. Pray! For the shoebox packers, processing center workers and for the children who receive the gifts. If you would like to hear firsthand how a shoebox gift can change a life, Crestwood will have a shoebox recipient speaking at their kickoff event on September 15. For more information on all things Operation Christmas Child, please contact Jessica Mathis: 2hokiefans@comcast.net or 804-571-6250. Chesterfield Food Bank Although the youth group is still on summer break, several members and their families volunteered at the Chesterfield Food Bank on August 18 and August 23. The kids had a great time breaking down boxes, restocking items and packing lunch and breakfast items for local children on Wednesday! We hope to schedule another date to volunteer in the near future. September 2017

United Methodist Women YARD SALE - It is finally time again for the fall yard sale! Don't forget the date - Saturday, September 30th starting at 8AM. Bring your "for sale" items on Friday, the 29th from 10AM to 6PM - we are looking for warm, fall/ winter clothing for this sale. Remember - no TVs. Clean out your closets and support the United Methodist Women. We are also looking for "willing hands" to help on Friday and Saturday morning. Please take the opportunity to sign up - we do have fun and make a lot of money as we sell all the "treasures" that have been brought in for sale. RAINBOW GIVERS - we are very pleased to report that we had three Rainbow Givers this year in our UMW chapter. Mary Simmons, Doris Morefield and Betty Forbes made additional gifts in honor of someone special in their lives and to missions and the World Thank Offering. We appreciate the giving hearts of our members. OUR NEXT MEETING - Diana Harbarger, President of the James River District UMW will be our speaker on Monday night, September 18th at 7PM in the Grundy Parlor. Make plans now to attend and hear about what is happening in the James River District. This will be Diana's first visit to our chapter and we want a large group to welcome her. Diana is a member of the Wesley UMC in Colonial Heights and is very active in her own church and does a lot of mission work for Methodist groups. DISTRICT UMW MEETING - on Sunday, September 24th, 3PM, Chester UMC, Chester will be hosting the James River UMW District Annual meeting. Since this meeting is so close to us, we will not be carpooling. Please mark your calendars to attend since the district meetings are always informative and because this is the annual meeting, awards will be distributed. We have worked hard this past year and hope to be recognized with lots of awards. Also because we are so close, it is an opportunity for lots of you to attend. We want a good turn out from our Bermuda Hundred group and if you need a ride, just contact Betty Forbes or Doris Morefield. THANK YOU - we appreciate all of you who helped with Pastor Mike's celebration luncheon, Vacation Bible School, and Charles Woodard's celebration of life reception. We have a busy church and we are so pleased to have so many who are willing to help. COME JOIN US - remember all women of the church are invited to be members of the UMW. We would love to have you attend one of our meetings and get involved in our mission work. Hope to see you on September 18th. Doris Morefield, President September 2017

Earn. Save. Give. August 2017 Continued Stewardship Success BHUMC, Stewardship Summer is coming to an end hopefully everyone has enjoyed some sun, fun, family and friends. Through the month of August our giving has remained steady and on target; both with sharing of our gifts of time and money. This is all true and inspirational, even in the times of normal attendance and presence issues the summer tends to bring. Some giving # s fun facts to consider all of which are perfectly consistent and a great demonstration of BHUMC s commitment to giving. Through 35 weeks of 2017 (*8/27/2017*): While attendance is down 9% from last year, Our tithes and offerings are within 5% of 2016 s YTD. We are 67% of the way through 2017 and our pledged amount giving is 68% of the pledge goal right on! Through August we have funded 100% of our apportionments and full budget for the 30 th consecutive month. Currently we remain right on target to fully fund apportionments for the 5 th consecutive year. Side Note If you made a giving pledge for 2017 (and we are doing a good job keep pace with those pledge goals) and you would like to see your results of actual compared to your pledge through 8/2017 let me know and I will be happy to share your 2017 progress with you, anonymously. You can reach me at: dsteinbraker@hotmail.com. If you did not make a pledge for this year, considering joining the commitment pledge process for 2018 it is a great way to add another layer of commitment to God and all he has shared with us (more on 2018 pledge season coming this fall). The regular reminder WE NEED YOU anyone interested is joining the stewardship committee? Please jump in we would love to expand the team for 2018 (see/contact Dave Steinbraker to inquire about becoming part of the stewardship committee).
