CENTENNIEL Here for Good 2015 I want you to take a moment and think about this who are the people in your life who have made a lasting impact? You remember them. you are still learning from them and what they taught you. You can look at your life and say: I m here because Mrs. Jones didn t give up on me in the Second Grade because Ms. Ruth and Mrs. Mamie Jones loved me through years of Vacation Bible School and Sunday School lessons- through gum stuck in my hair and all of my precocious questions. I m here today because Coach Adams cared enough to ask the right questions That s just a short list. Our list goes long before us. We are here and we have faith because of those who made an impact on us. Hebrews 11 lists those who made sure that we would know faith in God by living not for themselves but for a faith in God and for a faith that was beyond themselves. Faith is indeed the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not see as Hebrews 11:1 tells us. We have faith in Jesus Christ who calls us to live in a faith that will be here long after us. We have a hope that what we do now will lead and encourage others in faith. Who are we here for? We are here not only for ourselves, we are here for Christ and we are here for others. Jesus says in Matthew 25 that he expects us to be here for the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, and those in prison. Jesus pulls the children into his lap and tell us to be here for the little ones, He welcome those who were rich, poor, young, old, outcast, and popular Jesus came not only for some, but for all. When the angel announced Good News to the shepherds in the fields on the first Christmas the message was I am bringing good news of great joy for all the people! How are we here for all the people? How are we here to build faith as those saints who came before us? 60 years next year, we celebrate that God placed Bermuda Hundred UMC on this hill in the Enon community with a purpose to be here for God s people to spread this good news. We are not only here for 60 years we re here for good! John Wesley described our purpose was to Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. Continued on the next page

Continued from the previous page In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can. We re here for good and we re here to do good for the glory of God! How do we ensure that this can happen? How will we leave a lasting impact for the generations that follow us just as those in our faith before us made it possible for us to grow in faith? One way John Wesley suggested we can carry out the mission of Jesus Christ is to Earn all we can, Save all we can, and Give all can! In this way we can Reach all we can for Jesus Christ! During the Month of October we ll explore this in our Here for Good Sermon Series. I hope you will join us each Sunday and participate in a small group studying Earn. Save. Give. Wesley s Simple Rules for Money by James Harnish either on Sunday mornings in the Sojouner s Class in the Grundy Parlor or on Wednesday nights in the Grundy Parlor (childcare provided). Sunday, October 4 : If You Could Ask for Anything Sunday, October 11 Money The Excellent Gift Sunday, October 18: You Can t Take It With You Sunday, October 25 How Far Will You Go? 4 Stepping Out in Faith : An Interview with Edna Sherrill, Chair of Worship Team Pastor Beth: When asked to be the Chair of the Worship Team what did you think? How did you feel? Edna Sherrill: The first thing I felt was honored. The second thing I thought was Oh my goodness, I don t think I can do this. Pastor Beth: How did come to say yes? How did you know this was something God was calling you do to? Edna Sherrill: I prayed about it a lot and thought about it. Finally I decided that I would give it a shot. You had an influence on me because you gave me encouragement and I knew you would be there to help me. Pastor Beth: The Living Last Supper earlier this year was something new for the church, our Worship Team, and for you. What was that like? Edna Sherrill: Very scary. But I didn t have time to worry, I just had to take the bull by the horns and get it done. I solicited a lot of help from others to make costumes, be the performers, and so much behind the scenes things like the decorating, getting the parts ready, and organizing rehearsals. It was a huge undertaking and I was afraid I couldn t do it. But, I just worked through it piece by piece until we had it down. Pastor Beth: What did that experience do for you? Edna Sherrill: God can teach you. God is here. You can do anything with God s help. This really pushed me outside my comfort zone. I had never taken on anything of this nature or magnitude. I m not a creative person and I had to think forward and beyond. I am absolutely glad that I did this and had the challenge. Pastor Beth: What did that experience do for the church? Edna Sherrill: We had more people at that Holy Thursday service than we had ever had before. It was wonderful to have so many people involved! It brought to light what was going on before the crucifixion and was very spiritual. It taught us about the disciples and what they were experiencing. Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church Continued on the next page October 2015

Continued from the previous page Pastor Beth: Looking back, what fruit do you see God has produced in you through the experience of serving as the chair on the Worship Team? Edna Sherrill: It has made me more involved in the church and activities and in the worship scene. I m more involved with everything in the church and with more people. It has made me pray more and ask for God s guidance. Pastor Beth: What encouragement would give you to others about stepping out and trying new things? Edna Sherrill: You ll always have people in the church that will help you and support you. When you take on a challenge it gives you a new sense of self-worth for yourself and for the church. Try it and you ll like it. 6 United Methodist Youth Fellowship The youth kick off was amazing in the true sense of the word. It was wonderful to see new faces and visit with old friends. Check out the picture below to see the awesome t-shirts our youth made! Do you think these look fabulous and you wish you had one of your own? You re in luck! During the month of October the youth will be taking t-shirt orders as a fundraiser. The design will be slightly different with BHUMC on the front, but smaller, and you will be able to pick your colors for the back. If you only want one simple color that is fine too. They will be $10 each. Order forms will be available the first Sunday of October. Youth Schedule: Sunday Oct 4 th 6-8pm meeting Sunday Oct 11 th 6-8pm meeting Children and Youth Ministry Saturday Oct 17 th volunteer at Stop Hunger Now event 2pm Sunday Oct 18 th 6-8pm Movie night! (Reward for all your hard work the day before) Saturday Oct 24 th volunteer and have a trunk at Harvest Fest 4-7pm Sat after Harvest Fest or Sunday have a spooky event! (Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens, corn maze etc.) Children s Ministry The fall kick off was tons of fun for all of our children! Face paint, sack races, bubble snakes, corn hole, and of course yummy food! If you have friends will small children I would strongly encourage you invite them for special events like this. Do you know some of our new members have originated from events like this! Why not take advantage of our next one, Harvest Fest on October 24 th 4-7pm. It will be a spooky good time with games, crafts, food and Trunk or Treat! Check out the fun with snake bubbles below! For the parents that were asking, all you need to do is cut the end off of a water bottle, put a sock over that end, and secure with a rubber band. For the bubbles add half liquid soap (I used dawn) and half water. Stick just the sock part of the bottle into the soap and blow through the other end! You can even add a drop or two of food coloring to the sock for a rainbow snake! Who would like to volunteer for Children s Church just once every 2 months? My goal is to have 8 set people to volunteer on a rotating basis for Children s Church. This will cut down on some of the last minute confusion that happens once in a while. We will still need additional volunteers to cover having two people each week, but this will give us a core group of people that we can count on each week. Please let me know if you are interested. Love and Peace, Laurel Sage Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church October 2015

Scouting News Scout Master s Minute: The Boy Scouts changed their policy to accept leaders who are gay. Chartered organizations like our church can still have the Boy Scouts, but can also choose, because of religious beliefs, to not accept gay members. It is a lot like the proposal Adam Hamilton is putting forth in the church that each church choose for itself. Since we are the chartered organization we could add additional provisions and refuse to accept gay leaders in our troop if the church should choose to do so. At our Church Council meeting, our council voted 10-3 to accept the Boy Scouts new policy of choosing leaders regardless of sexual orientation. In other news, the council at St. Marks UMC approved transferring the scouting equipment they had in storage to BHUMC and the Boy Scouts. Plans are in the works to figure out storage solutions and I want to thank Bill Talley V for his help in this. Yours in Scouting, Marc Wilts Chartered Organization Representative Girl Scout News: Girl Scout Troop 5257 meets on the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesdays each month from 6:30-8:00pm. 9 Joe Plemmons Music Director for the 11am Worship Service Hi, my name is Joe. I've been a Methodist since the cradle, and involved in church music since age fourteen, when unbeknownst to me my mother told the church choir director that I'd just love to join the youth choir. I met my wife in seminary, and she convinced me to come to Virginia. When I am not waving my arms in front of a choir, I often find myself involved in other musical endeavors. I am a trombonist, currently playing with the Northern Neck Orchestra, the Northern Neck Big Band, and a Richmond-based trombone choir called Bonefire. I have recently joined the Barbershop Harmony Society, and I also write music in my spare time. Outside of music, I enjoy learning and keeping my brain active; my favorite thing is random, seemingly useless knowledge. I am working towards ordination in the Methodist Church as a deacon, and am still in the process of discerning exactly what God's calling on my heart is. But what I do know is that music is and always will be an integral part of how God moves through me. Joe Plemmons, Music Director The Community Garden had some problems. The soil, in the garden area, was less than desirable. It was very rocky, had cement chunks, and was almost all clay. So, next year we will install raised garden areas and put some good quality topsoil in those areas. We will be asking you if you would like a raised bed area, early next year. Until then, you can be thinking about what you would like to grow in your garden. Remember that the early crops (i.e. potatoes, onions, etc.) can usually be planted around March 15 th. The warm crops, (i.e. tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.) can go into the ground around April 15 th. We will update you as information becomes available, Charles Woodard. The Church Council along with the Visioning Team will meet on Saturday, October 10 from 9am-2pm- just as we did for a Retreat at the beginning of our year of Visioning. This time we will spend time Clarifying and Discerning Goals that have come through the data of Visioning Meetings, The Night to Remember, the Afternoon of Reflection, interviews with Community Leaders, and all feedback we've received. It will be very helpful and important to have everyone from Church Council present. There will be a congregational wide potluck and meeting on Sunday, October 18 from 5-8pm where we will share goals and make top priorities. We hope to have everyone participate in this event. We invite you to bring a dish to share. Photo from June 28th s An Afternoon of Reflection Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church October 2015

Earn. Save. Give. - BHUMC 2015 Stewardship Program & Consecration Sunday Dear BHUMC, Stewardship You re probably used to hearing people in church talk about giving. But when was the last time in church that you talked about earning or saving? Is it unchristian to earn money? Is it wrong to save for ourselves and our families? John Wesley didn t think so. Wesley, the Christian evangelist and founder of the Methodist movement, gave a remarkable sermon called The Use of Money. In it, he said that the important thing isn t money itself but how we use it. Wesley s surprising advice still rings true today: earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can. During the month of October, our church will experience an exciting new stewardship program, Earn. Save. Give.: Wesley s Simple Rules for Money, developed by popular author and pastor James A. Harnish. The program is centered on a book, in which Harnish describes Wesley s surprising advice and introduces us each week to faithful Christians who, like all of us, struggle with money. Whether you are a regular giver, a sometime giver or not giving currently; we are calling all of you to begin praying about your stewardship, to think critically in regards to challenging yourself on your giving commitment for Additionally, we would like to invite any and every one to participate in the Earn. Save. Give. Small group meetings each Wednesday in October from 7:00-9:00pm, at BHUMC (Parents of young ones GREAT NEWS - child care will be offered) so please join us. This Stewardship drive will culminate with Consecration Sunday on November 1st by turning in our 2016 commitment cards and a Celebration of Sharing pot luck lunch. So as we build to that day (11/1/15), soak up the all the great, relevant sermons, join the Earn. Save. Give. group and think/pray about challenging your stewardship commitment for The 2016 Consecration if very important. BUT, let s not forget about our current giving and stewardship goals as we finish out GREAT NEWS here too our giving allowed us to fully fund our August budget AND apportionments. Giving was down a bit in August compared to last year, but we still succeeded in covering apportionments for the month. As we consider 2016, let s make a strong, committed push to reach our goals and be the best at giving we can be for the remainder of Again CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU. We continue the challenge to achieve our 2015 goal of funding 100% of our budget and apportionments for the 3 rd consecutive year. Continued on the next page Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church October 2015

Stewardship Continued from the previous page As normal, below is a snap shot of our year to date success and progress. Just 4 months remaining and a little less ground for us to make up. We can do it, we will do it! Thanks you to all and In God s Grace, Your stewardship committee Dave Steinbraker, Dorothy Mooney, Ann McNinch, Charles Woodward and Bill Talley V Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church October 2015
