PASTOR S PAGE My Dear Friends, This past July Carolyn Mueller, our parish receptionist, informed me that she would be leaving her position to go back into the nursing field. She had been a nurse for many years and when she retired she had accepted my offer to work here at Holy Spirit. I told her I would accept her resignation but I would prefer that she reconsider and let me know for sure in August. At our next meeting in August she notified me that that she loves the parish but that her heart is in nursing. Carolyn was an excellent employee. She is smart, very good with detail and she was a very conscientious worker. When I hired Carolyn, she was agreeing to be a part time employee working as a receptionist. As time progressed, she became the bulletin editor, the overseer of Religious Education and she was still working the front desk. It was a job for three people, but she did it all. She will be missed by many, especially me. However, I will miss her most as an employee not only because she was very loyal to the parish and had an extremely good work ethic but, most of all, because she is a wonderful human being. She has a strong faith in Jesus Christ and lives according to the moral values of our faith. Fortunately, for all of us, she will remain a parishioner here at Holy Spirit parish. Carolyn, thank you for your commitment to Holy Spirit parish. Be assured of our prayers. Please see our new, and permanent, office hours on the front cover of the bulletin. Please take note that we are now closed on Friday. Our two newest employees are Anna Rose Regan and Ann Koszalka. Anna Rose s hours are Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 A.M. 5:00 P.M. and she is also the editor of the bulletin. Ann s hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 A.M. 5:00 P.M. Please stop in and say hello. Earlier in the summer Daniel McGuigan completed his Eagle Scout project here at the rectory. Dan expanded the food pantry and reinforced the shelving. We now have additional space and some heavier shelving. This is perfect timing with the holidays right around the corner. During the next few months, and especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas we will receive more food than any other time during the course of the year. The project is very well done and it will get much use for many years to come, however, what impressed me the most is his maturity and professionalism. Dan worked hard and has certainly earned his Eagle Scout! Dan, thank you for a job well done! Last week we had two Masses to honor those who lost their lives 15 years ago on September 11, 2001. At our family Mass the teenagers read names of some of our local heroes, and after each name Fireman Ed Waldron rang a bell followed by a brief moment of silence. I thank our young people for having the courage to be involved last week and every week. This is where God wants them to be. At the 11:00 A.M. Mass, in addition to acknowledging those who lost their lives, we also acknowledged our New Hyde Park Fire Department, many of whom were here at Church. Our men and women who volunteer their time as firefighters are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice every day. We want them to know how much we appreciate them and how fortunate we are to have them. May God bless them every day! This week is the start of religious education classes. There is still time to register. If you need to register, please contact John Hogan, our new director of religious education, at 354-0359 ext. 132 or send him an email at: jhoganhs@gmail.com Stay well and be assured of my prayers. Fr. Grieco -2-

DEACON LACHLAN Next week, on Wednesday we celebrate the feast day of St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. Matthew was a tax collector when he was called by Jesus to come and follow him. He seemed, to most, to be a very unusual choice. Tax collectors were known to cheat those from whom they collected. Essentially, the Romans would tell the tax collector how much they expected from a particular area. The tax collector kept anything he collected above that number, so they tended to overtax everyone, and therefore, as a group, they became very unpopular. One of my favorite artists is Caravaggio who was active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Three of his works, depicting the life of Matthew, are on display in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. The three paintings are The Calling of Matthew, The Inspiration of Matthew and The Martyrdom of Matthew. Each in its own way is a remarkable work of art, and highly regarded as such. My own favorite is The Calling of Matthew (left) where Matthew has a look of... Who me? on his face...as Jesus points to him to come follow him. Matthew is at his table counting up his illgotten gains when Jesus approaches him. As I mentioned earlier, tax collectors were despised, regarded as no better than thieves...considered to be among the worst of sinners. Hence the look of surprise on Matthew s face. It may be difficult to see in this picture, but while Jesus points to Matthew, his feet are turned towards the door... to suggest that he is leaving immediately and that Matthew must also leave immediately and come with him. Matthew feels as though there must be some mistake, but Jesus obviously knows what he is doing. When he is accused of dining with tax collectors and sinners he tells the Pharisees I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Jesus calls all of us to follow him. We tend to be like Matthew...who me?...but the answer is yes...to each of us the answer is yes. Like Matthew we are all sinners, but we are called to repentance...called to change our ways...and.. like Matthew...called to spread the Gospel message of Jesus. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

To help celebrate Respect Life Month the program will begin the first weekend of October. The purpose is to have the parish community pray for unborn babies in danger of abortion and educate parishioners about the development of the unborn child over the nine-month period before birth. The members of our parish family will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived. In filling out the prayer card, a commitment is made to pray for this child. In addition, everyone is invited to name the child for whom they will be praying. This helps to give the baby the humanity he or she deserves. The sign-up cards will be available at each of the church entrances. -6-
