Most Holy Trinity May 26, 2013 3 This weekend we celebrate Trinity Sunday. It is also Memorial Day weekend. We also bid farewell to Fr. Anand who is returning home to India after his four-year stay with us. At the same time we are preparing to welcome Fr. Solomon who will be succeeding Fr. Anand. So there s quite a lot to do. OLB s Food Outreach One Shopping bag of food Per household Per month. Most feasts of the Church commemorate articles of faith based in time. The Incarnation is observed at the Annunciation and at Christmas, the Resurrection at Easter, the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Saints Days acknowledge our relationship with our predecessors in faith: they lived at specific times in specific places. Today, Trinity Sunday, and next Sunday, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) are observances of dogmas that transcend time and place. We cannot locate the Trinity temporally or spatially: it is eternal, without beginning or end. The Sacrament of the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist, while instituted on the Thursday of the Pascal Event, is an ongoing reality, ever-present to the Church. It is not limited by time or place. Memorial Day honors those members of the armed forces who died in battle. The observance seems to have arisen spontaneously in the South during the American Civil War. By the 1880 s it was widely observed and honored all fallen troops, both Union and Confederate. It was originally known a Decoration Day since the graves of the fallen were decorated with flowers on that day. Flag etiquette calls for the American flag to be raised briskly to full staff and then lowed to half staff and flown there until noon when it is returned to full staff. Memorial Day is sometimes confused with Veterans Day which honors all who have served, the living and the dead. Finally we wish God-speed and good luck to Fr. Anand as he returns home to become the pastor of Holy Family church in Chittoor, India. The priest he is succeeding is Fr. Solomon, who is coming to Our Lady of the Brook this week. While we will miss Fr. Anand, we look forward working with Fr. Solomon and the unique gifts he will bring to the ministry. Peace, now and always, You can make donations for tornado relief at the website for Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Catholic Charities. Www.catholiccharitiesOK.org Don't Forget! The Women's Club will be hosting a Farewell Reception for Fr. Anand in the Social Area after the 11:15 am Mass THIS WEEKEND (Sunday, May 26th) Be sure to come back and bid Fr. Anand Farewell and sharing his gentle spirit with us these past five years. Last Call! This weekend will be the last Sunday Hospitality until September 2013. Thanks to all who helped make our Sundays more special, as we enjoyed Fellowship and delicious baked goods. If you wish to help out with this ministry, contact the Women s Club!

Most Holy Trinity May 26, 2013 5 Bulletin Building Blocks - Holy Trinity TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on the mystery of God in three persons. At baptism, we are initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism, when a new believer was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters. Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham s hospitality to angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit.
