Parish Pilgrimage: Part 2 T he second of the most important attractions of our pilgrimage is Lourdes. It is a village in France where Our Blessed Mother appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. Her messages to Bernadette are ageless and apply to all of us today. On February 11, 1858, Bernadette was gathering wood with her sister and a friend on the outskirts of a village in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. As they walked, the girl heard a noise like a gust of wind and looked up to see a woman dressed in white and glowing with light, standing in an opening in the rock above her. The woman smiled at the girl, who later said that the lady was the loveliest thing she had ever seen. Over the course of the next five months, the woman would appear to the girl 17 more times, bringing a series of messages that would make Lourdes one of the most famous pilgrimage places in the world and the girl, Bernadette, a saint. During the ninth apparition, Bernadette astonished the hundreds of people who were present by suddenly falling to her knees and digging in the dirt. The lady had told her to dig and, when she did, a spring appeared. A few days later, a woman immersed her injured arm in the water, and she was miraculously healed. Once the word of the healing spread, even more people flocked to the grotto. The lady continued to give Bernadette messages, saying that she wanted people to repent and do penance. During the 16th apparition, she finally gave Bernadette an answer to the question of her identity: I am the Immaculate Conception. Today more than five million people stand before that same rock each year, seeking healing in a place that has become synonymous with miracles. They light candles, march in processions, and drink from the water that flows from the grotto. Most of all, they pray following the example set by the simple peasant girl, Bernadette. Apart from Lourdes and Fatima, we will be visiting Santiago de Compostela where the remains of Apostle St. James the Great is interned; Loyola the birthplace of St. Ignatius, Zaragoza where St. James had a vision of Our Lady standing on the pillar, encouraging him to continue his apostolic mission in Spain; Montserrat Catalonia s most important shrine where the Black Virgin is venerated since medieval ages; and Barcelona Spain s most cosmopolitan city and the home of the beautiful Basilica of Sagrada Familia under construction since 1882. I am very excited about celebrating Masses at all these holy places and we will be praying for each of you. If you have any special intentions to pray for, please write them on a slip of paper or on the card available in the Church, and drop them off in the basket at the back of the church TODAY. I will be happy to take them with me. Your prayer intentions will be placed on the altars and prayed for during the Masses. Keep us all in your prayers for a safe and spiritually enriching trip. Fr. Jose Thomas

Instead of death, though, Gianna survived a late-term saline abor on and entered the world two months premature and weighing just two-and-a-half pounds. Her story of overcoming unspeakable challenges, and message of hope, has been shared all over the world including at the Bri sh and Australian parliaments, and before the U.S. Congress.
