STAFF Five Churches, One Witness Superior s ive ELCA churches have done a few services together in the last two years for the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation, Good Friday, and Advent. After every one people said, We should do more things like this! And we will! On the ive Wednesdays in Lent this year (March 13, 20, 27, April 3 and 10) the ive pastors will preach at a different church each week. Think of it as getting to know the neighbors. Here are the pastors, dates, and topics for Pilgrim: March 13 Dennis Paulson from Our Savior s Love God with All Your Mind March 20 Michelle Rowell from Concordia Hear, O Israel March 27 Will Mowchan from PLC Love God with All Your Heart April 3 Bridget Jones from Bethel Love God with All Your Strength April 10 Pastor Victor St. George, Zion Love God with All Your Soul These themes de ine faith. They were irst mentioned in Deuteronomy 6 in the Old Testament, and then used many other times throughout history in the Bible. The ive church councils are also talking about, and are excited about, inding other ways to work together, to make our one witness in the Twin Ports stronger. Radio Ministry Contributions PLC appreciates each gift and thanks the following members and friends who contributed to the Radio Ministry during February: Rosanne Perala M/M Ray Somerville M/M Dick Porter David Minotte Irvin Rounsville council minutes cont. versus an email version. Don Miller will put something in the bulletin about which option people would like. Also, that if they would like to continue getting a hard copy, that a $12 a year fee would be attached to help fund the cost of making and mailing them. 3) Communication was a big topic of discussion and how to best help with that in the congregation. Ideas were brought up about having a way to attach a name to a face, through a bulletin board. Taking pictures of those go-to people and putting them up on a board so people know who it is they would need to talk to. 4) Dale was going to reach out to someone that could help possibly put together a new congregation directory. 5) Jenny discussed updating the webpage, and will be reaching out to someone about using their services to help us update it. There was discussion about adding a podcast to the website, as a way for people to be able to listen to the church service instead of using the radio broadcast system due to its cost. 6) Discussion about utilizing the message sign outside as a way to advertise more about what is going on at church, such as the Superior Small Batch or Silver Sneakers. A point person to be able to update the sign is in the works. 7) Colleen talked about the meeting that convened on Feb. 5 th with the other ELCA church council presidents in Superior. There are plans on having a follow-up meeting on March 12 th to discuss more ways to work together in the future, in terms of membership, stewardship, and how we go about making those things happen. Also, there are plans through one of the churches to have a Church Picnic on August 4 th, in which all congregations are welcome to attend. 8) Mary and Andrea were added as administrators to the Facebook page, in order to help with communication about what is going on at Pilgrim throughout social media. Closing Prayer: Closed with the Lord s Prayer. Adjournment: Jenny moved to adjourn the meeting. Will seconded. Motion carried. M -W L S March 6 (Ash Wed), 13, 20, and 27 5:00 Soup Supper 5:30 All Age Learning 6:30 Worship Mission Trip News We are currently on the final steps for raising funds for our upcoming mission trip to Puerto Rico. There are 4 adults and 6 youth going on this Mission to help our neighbors in Puerto Rico. Our group will be having a fundraising event open to the public on Saturday April 6 th at Tower Ave Tavern (owners are related to some of the Mission trip team), 405 Tower Ave in Superior. The event will be from 2:00-6:00. We will be having a silent auction that will begin at 2:00 and end at 5:30. We have been reaching out to many of the businesses in Superior for donations and gift baskets. We will also have a 50/50 raffle and a bake sale. We are very close to reaching our goal for all 10 members to attend this mission trip of a lifetime. You are invited to attend and welcome to invite your family and friends. Thank you Pilgrim members for all your support!! WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. M S Pilgrim will host the 69th annual Mariners Sunday on March 3rd with the special offering to be given to the Seafarer s Ministry. QUILTERS Saturday, March 9 9:00 a.m. Pilgrim Mission Team Pilgrim Lutheran Church Council Minutes February 19, 2019 Call to Order: Pres. Colleen Elonen. Jamie Peterson excused, all others present. Opening Prayer: Pastor Will New Business: Shelly Bong came to discuss the next fundraising event for the Mission Team. They will be having a silent auction and bake sale April 6 at the Tower Ave. Tavern (owner of one of the youth). They are asking for Council s support to begin collecting gift basket donations and to keep at church. Pilgrim members will be able to bid on items starting March 31, before opening up to public. The group has raised almost ¾ of the funds needed for their trip to Puerto Rico and they expressed much appreciation to Pilgrim congregation for helping with the fundraising. They will put notices in the Progress and weekly bulletins. Secretary s Report: Time was given to review January s secretary report. Jenny made a motion to approve the minutes. Matt seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer s Report: Don discussed the treasurer s report. He stated that he will be getting emailed the Thrivent financial investment information soon and will compile that information for us next month. It was reviewed that the budget will be in deficit for the first six months of this year. Tanya moved to accept the treasurer s report. Jenny seconded. Motion carried. Pastor s Review: Pastor Will discussed three different things in regards to keeping a big picture in mind as we move forward as a church. 1) Discussed what Elizabeth Eaton had said, What is the Spirit doing? And to keep that question in mind as we move ahead. Pastor Will met with synod staff members and heard that there are more retirements than new people coming in to take positions. And that in the whole Twin Ports area, there are only about 3-4 pastors available to work with if he ever needs a substitute, which is something to keep in mind as his hours change over time. 2) Discussed with whom and where we do ministry, which is something that can change in the future. We are starting to get a taste of that this Lent with the 5 ELCA Superior pastors preaching at each other s churches. 3) Discussed different ways to make sure that we have a building that is largely sustaining itself. Possible options were discussed for renting out other areas in the church, which could ultimately grow into helping sustain itself. 4) Pastor Will also had a hand-out about equipment for using a service through the synod that can be kept in the narthex for giving an offering by using a debit/credit card. There is a $45 dollar charge for equipment and a small monthly processing fee, which is significantly cheaper than a previous option that was looked at by Council last year. Property Committee: Dale Johnson gave an update on what was discussed at the property committee. 1) Purchase of a new vacuum cleaner. 2) Discussed the changes that will need to be talked about in terms of repairing the roof and ceiling this coming spring. 3) Cost saving measures were talked about, for example, turning off the lights in all areas of the church when no one is around, and about putting up signs to remind people. Discussion regarding the cost/benefit of having some automatic light switches and the type of bulbs that we currently use could be changed; and having an energy audit to see if there are ways to help with energy savings in the church. 4) Asked for rules for the kitchen to be displayed, so everyone knows what to do when and after they use it. Pastor Will stated there are some being drawn up right now and will be available soon. Other Business: 1) Colleen brought up the topic of committee structures and if the same committees need to be kept or re-evaluated. It was decided that instead of separate groups, it would make more sense to have go-to people for different topics. That way, if the congregation has questions or ideas, they can contact the person that is in charge of that topic and go from there. 2) Discussion about cost savings via getting a printed copy of the Progress 3 8 council minutes cont. on pg. 9

We had our kickoff meeting at Concordia in February and agreed to meet monthly at rotating churches to discuss ways that we can support each church s programs and activities, worship services and outreach. Going forward, you will see notes in the weekly bulletins and monthly Progress of the activities and we encourage your participation in the events! The Church Council is looking at all aspects of the Church ministry. We are wondering how many people are listening to our radio broadcast. If you do listen to the broadcast or know someone who does, please let the office know. We are not necessarily looking for names, just the numbers. If anyone who listens to the broadcast wants a copy of the Pilgrim s Progress who is not currently receiving it, we would need their name and address and be happy to mail them a copy. Please call the office at 715-392-4731 or e- mail officemgr@plcsuperior.org. Highlights from the Annual meeting: For those of you who were unable to attend the Annual meeting, we wanted to give you all some of the key points that were discussed and approved. During the last few meetings of the year, the Council took a hard look at the expenses and income of our church and came up with a plan to keep Pilgrim vibrant and healthy without so much dependence on our endowments. Going forward in 2019 we will be reevaluating committee structures and functions to encourage more interactions, not only with Pilgrim people, but with members of the five other ELCA churches in Superior. In keeping in line with other churches and following Synod recommendations, the Council decided to reduce our Office Administrator and Custodian positions to half-time starting June 1 and the Pastor position to three-quarters time. Some of the work and responsibilities currently being done by these folks will have to be picked up by volunteers, so we are asking each of you to think differently about how you can help move the church forward while helping to keep it running! We are excited to think about all the new possibilities, and all options are on the table so the Council members appreciate your support and feedback on how we can accomplish all we envision to promote God and our church to the community and the world. Installation and recognition of your elected Council members for 2019 will be held on March 10 at the 9:30 AM service. Please come meet and greet at the mini reception afterward as well. Q Q The Quarterly Quilters will meet again on Saturday March 9 from 9-12 in Fellowship Hall. Everyone is welcome to help pin quilts together, or to make a fleece tied blanket. We will try to assemble as many as possible this month in anticipation of National Quilting Day (March 16 th ). It celebrates quilts and those who make them annually on the third Saturday in March. The National Quilting Association started National Quilting Day in 1991. On Sunday, March 17 we will have many of our quilts on display in the sanctuary. We encourage anyone who has a suggestion of where to donate quilts, from shut-ins, home-bound folks to local charities, please let Colleen Elonen or Jan Cummings know. 4
