BILL s BLACK BOOK At Christmas for the past several years I ve given a devotional to each of my family members. In December I gave the ladies a devotional journal called Secrets of the Proverbs 31 Woman: Fresh Perspectives on Biblical Wisdom for Women by Rae Simons. The title intrigued me because of the two words fresh perspectives. I m always looking for fresh ways to relate timeless principles in a relevant manner. So I read through the few sample pages online and decided that this devotional would be a good fit for my daughters and daughter-in-law. I went ahead and bought one for myself as well so I could discover more of what the author had to say on this fantastic subject. I was very fortunate to be married to a Proverbs 31 Woman for 36 years. I loved her for her beauty (inside and out), her wisdom; her strength of character, courage, integrity, perseverance, excellence, sense of adventure, bravery, fun, creativity, passion and her love; for me and for life. I am thankful for the life we shared and I could not have asked for a better life partner. She would have loved this book and shared it with her friends. My purpose in reading this devotional (written for women) is to better understand the truths, principles and mindset of a virtuous woman in order to encourage the women I care about to be contemporary Proverbs 31 Women. The principles are indeed timeless and relevant for 2019. Let me share a little of what I m learning about virtuous women. A modern definition of virtuous is to be righteous, morally upright, saintly, principled and ethical. In the 1600 s (King James time) the concept of virtuous was someone who is strong and courageous, filled with power to bring about good. Modern Bible translations use the words excellent, capable, diligent, noble and worthy to translate the Hebrew word chayil which is used in the book of Proverbs. The Strong s Concordance defines chayil as strong, effective and brave. A virtuous woman is marked by her active goodness, strength to fight confidently and bravely, as well as wealthy, which through the energy and courage they possess, helps them to build strong nations, churches, communities and families. A virtuous woman is good enough, talented enough, smart enough, and capable enough to live a godly life and impact the hostile world around them. Wow! Thank God for virtuous women! Virtue, for all people, is rooted in our trust in God, which is supported by our active goodness which is inspired by virtue. Faith is what inspires us to take action. I ve already noted ten implications for men and how we can help the women in our lives. Be radical in your view of women and how you treat them. In marriage, embrace the idea of being a teammate with your wife. Value the contributions of the women in your life. Understand women s roles and men s roles for spiritual warfare in a fresh way. A Proverbs 31 Woman will make a godly man stronger. A godly man will make a Proverbs 31 Woman stronger. Do all you can to help women know that they are good enough, talented enough, smart enough, and capable enough as they strive to be virtuous women. Lead men to join together with women to build a strong nation, church, community and families by becoming and acting as godly men and women. Lead our church to grow in faith and trust God completely and thereby inspire us to take action. Men and women TOGETHER can be an unstoppable force for the Kingdom of God. Remember to cultivate love, choose progress and cherish civility. Father open our eyes to your truth that we might see clearly to encourage each other, especially the women in our lives. I recognize that I am a novice in understanding women. May I be an appropriate influence in this next journey through life. May FBC be a force for reconciliation and civility in our community, church, families and world in 2019 and beyond. Until Next Time, God Bless You! Pastor Bill 3

Randolph s Random Reflections to pursue righteousness. I imagine the Transformed series has already presented encouraging truths for you to respond to. The following paragraph presents a series of propositions about transformation we will be exposed to in the hopes of promoting healthy growth in obedience to God. Reject placing trust in fellow humans instead choosing to trust God. Take initiative to get right with God so I can live a life that is all in for God. Take responsibility for the choices that I make. Transformation may be something God does, but you are as close to God as you want to be. Transformation is promoted when we embrace the rest involved in taking Jesus yoke upon us. Transformation is realized when we live life differently due to being renewed by the truth. Transformation extends to altering the way we think about and manage our emotions. Transformation is realized when we gain a greater understanding of how much God really loves us. Transformation is revealed by how we utilize the resources God gives us including money. Transformation requires us to overcome obstacles by God s power. Some of the other truths we will be exposed to and challenged by include but are not limited to: Jesus Christ gives us new life. The one true God operates so as to strengthen His people. Taking care of your body and managing it well pleases God. Guard your heart and your affections. Renewal of the mind enables living a life pleasing to God. Blessing is bestowed upon those who trust in God. Jesus Christ gives us rest. There are consequences for the choices we make. Deep love accounts for and often overcomes sin. Full surrender to God renders a bold, confident Christian. Wealth is to be utilized to honor God. Idol worship repulses the one true God. The child of God does all work as if doing it for God. Perhaps some truths about how God operates will stick out to you such as: God remains sovereign as He draws people of all nations and backgrounds to Himself. God is merciful, but He still treats us in accord with our ways. God opposes the self-righteous and hypocritical. Allow a sense of excitement to denote you as you both appreciate what God is doing currently in and around your life and anticipate what He will continue to reveal to you in the upcoming weeks. Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare Perhaps some overarching action steps will come to the to ask or even dream of infinitely beyond our highest forefront: prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes. Ephesians 3:20 Be alert and intentional in avoiding evil instead choosing (TLB) 4

For Kids returns on Wednesday February 13th @ 6:00 pm. Join us for the Second Session of this great program for kids! Upcoming Lessons For The Dugout Sunday mornings continue to be a time of fun and learning for the children. For quite some time the team has been taking them through the Bible with some amazing stories, starting with God s creation, moving through the Old Testament all the way to the New Testament. The month of February finds us learning about God s plan for Paul. The emphasis for this month is that even though Paul faced many hardships, including being arrested, being shipwrecked, being held as a prisoner, and facing many kings and governors, through it all Paul continued to make much of Jesus. He knew that all of what he endured was a part of God s amazing plan for his life and he never failed to share God with all of those he encountered. He reminded everyone he met to stay encouraged, to stay faithful, to continue loving one another, and to continue to await, eagerly, Jesus return to earth for His family. The hope during this unit is that the children will begin to understand that they don t have to be afraid to share Christ with others and, in fact, it s their responsibility to share Him with others. The Sunday morning team is excited to be able to share Christ with the children of FBC. They understand it s a blessing to bless others, and inspiring these young hearts for Him is a true blessing. 2/3 THE SHIPWRECK 2/10 PAUL S JOY IN PRISON 2/17 PAUL MADE MUCH OF JESUS 2/24 PAUL S LETTER TO PHILEMON 6

God never intended for his followers to live the Christian life separated from the rest of the body of Christ. The church must provide an environment where people can share the real stuff of life and find support, encouragement, honesty, openness, grace, and biblical trust. The most effective way to do this is through small groups. Principle 1: Every Christian needs a spiritual family. Principle 2: Every Christian needs a laboratory for life.
