Christ Lutheran News January, 2017 A New Year s Meditation ~God of our yesterdays, our today, and our tomorrows ~ We praise You for Your unequaled greatness. Thank You for the year behind us and for the year ahead. Help us in Your new year, Father, to fret less and laugh more. To teach our children to laugh by laughing with them. To teach others to love by loving them. Knowing, when Love came to the stable tin Bethlehem, He came for us. So that Love could be with us, and we could know You. That we could share Love with others. Help us, Father, to hear Your love song in every sunrise, in the chirping of sparrows in our backyards, in the stories of our old folks, and the fantasies of our children. Help us to stop and listen to Your love songs, so that we may know You better and better. We rejoice in the world You loved into being. Thank You for another new year and for new chances every day. We pray for peace, for light, and for hope, that we might spread them to others. Forgive us for falling short this past year. We leave the irreparable past in your hands, and step out into the unknown new year knowing You will go with us. We accept Your gift of a new year and we rejoice in what s ahead, depending on You to help us do exactly what You want. I say it again, we rejoice! In Jesus name, Amen. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Ted s Desk... Since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. ~Romans 3:23-25a As we move into the year 2017, you will be hearing a lot about Martin Luther! There has already been a display at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts of artifacts from Luther s house, and articles in the secular press about him. That is because this year is the 500 th anniversary of the events that began what is called the Protestant Reformation of the Church. Martin Luther was a monk in Germany in the early 1500 s (around the time the Western hemisphere was being discovered, and the printing press was being invented). Through his study of the Bible, he became disturbed about several of the practices of the Church of his day particularly the sale of indulgences which it was claimed could absolve sin and get a person out of purgatory early and into heaven. Luther saw this as contradicting God s grace God s undeserved love through Jesus Christ as he read about it in the Bible. Romans 3, quoted above, was especially meaningful to Luther how could the Church be selling the gift of forgiveness that God was trying to give as a gift? On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther posted a list of topics about Church practices that he thought should be debated a list that is now known as the 95 Theses. The fact that a lowly monk would dare to question Church practices and challenge the power of the Church authorities caused quite an uproar. And, when Luther refused to back down without evidence from the Bible that he was wrong, he was excommunicated kicked out of the Church that he just wanted to improve! Martin Luther was far from perfect and we certainly do not worship Luther! His courage, though, and his focus on the authority of the Bible as the revealed Word of God changed both Church and society in many ways. Even today, his followers (yes, we Lutherans) bring to the larger Church an insistence on the grace of God as our only hope for salvation that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. May you have a blessed new year, and as we remember the events of 500 years ago, may we continue to put our hope in the forgiveness that God gives to us as a gift, through Jesus death and resurrection! ~Pastor Ted 4 5

Financial Information Giving Options... On this page you will find a brief overview of the month s offerings. It is our goal to provide you with actual, updated information about Christ Lutheran s financial status. Following our annual meeting, the congregation voted on the 2016 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $21,634.78 each month to cover our anticipated ministry expenses. In addition we will need $1,982.02 each month for our Synod Mission Support. ~Luther Onken, Treasurer & Dawn Mouw, Office Manager Many of us have discovered how helpful automatic electronic payments can be for those really important commitments we don t want to forget the mortgage, insurance, utilities, etc. Our gifts to the Church are also really important matters which could be budgeted and scheduled in this way. Our donations are a response to God s blessings, and fund the ministry of the Church in our congregation and throughout the world. Automatic electronic giving assures that our support of the church continues even when we are vacationing, home sick, or snow-bound. Dec Nov Oct Here s a look at where we ended November, 2016: Beginning Balance: $ (4,256.99) Receipts: $ 20,866.58 Expenses: $ 18,533.68 Borrow from Savings: $ 0 Ending Balance: $ (1,924.09) The gray bar shows our actual offerings through December 30. The black bar is our budgeted offering total. General Offerings: October - December, 2016 $5,000 $10,000 $15,000 $20,000 $25,000 $30,000 $35,000 Oct Nov Dec Actual $20,610.73 $14,878.00 $31,016.75 Budget $21,634.78 $21,634.78 $21,634.78 Online Giving Recognizing that some of us prefer to use our credit card for most transactions, the Stewardship Committee is encouraging you to use your smartphone to scan this QR code which will take you directly to the church website christinslayton.weebly.com. You will be able to quickly add your personal information on this secure site. Automatic Giving Another option for automatic giving is to withdraw your donation directly from either your checking or savings account. You can choose to have your donation taken out either on the 15th, or on the last day of the month, or at both times. Forms are available on the shelf in the narthex or on our website. Once you have completed the form, please return it to the church office. IRA Distributions If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can make "qualified charitable distributions" to the church and not include the IRA distribution as part of your taxable income. This can help people make direct gifts to ministry and save taxes! Could this help you? For more details talk to your tax person, or call Amy Bigot, Regional Gift Planner with the ELCA at 763-443-3750 or email at amy.bigot@elca.org There is no charge for her service. 8 9

Annual Meeting Set For Sunday, January 22 The annual meeting of Christ Lutheran Church has been scheduled for Sunday, January 22 nd, immediately following worship. A Fellowship and Service group is planning a lunch to follow the meeting. At the meeting we briefly review our congregation s ministry of the previous year, and set our budget for the coming year s ministry plans. We elect officers for the congregation, and new people to serve on our various ministry boards. We will also be voting on a request from the Endowment Fund for a change to their policies (see below). Thank you for your cooperation in planning to attend worship that day, and staying for the meeting and lunch to follow. In the event of bad weather, the meeting will be rescheduled for the same time on January 29 th. Weather Policy When school is let out early because of stormy weather, we will automatically cancel after-school and evening events that night. We will rarely (almost never?) cancel Sunday morning worship, as people appreciate the radio broadcast even more in stormy weather. Sunday School may be cancelled, however, as may Saturday evening worship. Listen to KJOE Radio for news of storm-related cancellations, or check the Slayton Christ Lutheran Church Facebook page. Always, of course, use your own judgment about whether or not it is safe to go out on stormy days. Radio Broadcast Ministry Thank you to everyone who has supported our Radio Broadcast Ministry in 2016. Checks ($65) can be made out to Christ Lutheran with Radio Broadcast in the memo or you can pay online by visiting our website. January 22, February 5 and 12 are currently available. 10 Endowment Fund Request Our congregation has an Endowment Fund, the result of some generous bequests and special gifts. This permanent fund is invested to promote and enhance the church s mission, and the outreach and ministry of the congregation. A portion of the earnings of the fund each year are available for special ministry needs, with the principal being maintained to help the fund grow. Endowment Fund guidelines currently say that the Endowment Fund Committee can only approve requests up to $500. They have found, though, that while they have not had a lot of requests for funds, some qualifying requests have been for more than $500. They are requesting that this limit be raised to $1,250. Our Executive Council thought this seemed reasonable, but this change in the Endowment Fund Guidelines needs to be approved by the congregation. It will be on the agenda of our congregational meeting on Sunday, January 22 nd. Mission Support Jesus said, Go and make disciples of all nations ~Matthew 28:16 Our Mission Support offerings go where we cannot travel. Our ELCA has 305 mission personnel serving in 45 countries! 120 new congregations are under development in the United States. Your gifts to Christ Lutheran designated Mission Support will help this work! Designated envelopes are available in the church narthex or use your own. 11

(1John 3:22) Life is a mission; I will live it helpfully: "Be ye kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another. (Ephesians 4:32) Life is a contest; I will live it earnestly: "Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong." ( 1 Corinthians 16:13) Life is a battle; I will live it courageously: "Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid; for the Lord thy God is with thee."
