The Fourth Sunday of Lent Saturday and Sunday March 30-31 2019 www.stjudecatholic.org The greatest story ever written The Fourth Sunday of Lent 2019 Will You Come to the Party? (Fr. Trey Nelson) At least, that s my opinion. The Parable of the Prodigal Son, which Jesus tells in today s Gospel selection, is, for me, the most powerful parable he told and the most powerful story ever written. Again, this is just my opinion, and it s based in large part on my own life experience. For example, the story begins with the words,...a man had two sons. (Lk. 15:1) Given that I have one brother, these words always cause me to stop right in my tracks. I can personally relate to much, if not all, of the emotion felt in this story. While it is a long story, one of the longest of Jesus parables, it is fairly straightforward in its lesson. God s love for us is excessive. One of the definitions of the word prodigal is excessive. If you look at the story, you come to see that all three of the main characters were excessive in something: the younger son was, at first, excessive in his selfishness, then later in his repentance. The father was excessive in his love. And then, right there in the middle of the whole thing is the older brother, who was excessive in his anger, resentment, and probably jealousy as well. At different points in my life I have found myself able to relate to each of these characters. While I knew that my father loved us all as we needed to be loved, I also knew that my relationship with him and my brother s relationship with him were different. It wasn t a negative difference. It was just simply different, as relationships are in every family. Let me suggest for you, however, one of the most significant parts of the story and then how this story perhaps challenges each of us. We know how the story turns out for everyone except the older son. The father and the younger son are reunited. A party of thanks is thrown in his honor. His relationship with his dad is healed. The brokenness, bitterness, and distance are gone. We do not know, however, how things turned out for the older son. Picture that final scene. It s the end of the day. The sun has gone or was going down. From the house the house in which they grew up and had probably been born is filled with the sound of music, dancing, singing, and laughter. The warm evening light of lamps and candles shines through the windows to the night outside. And there at the front door, outside not inside, stand the father and the older son. The son stands there, still angry and bitter. The father stands there asking, no begging his son to let him love him. The father asks him, won t you come in, son? Won t you come to the party? Does the older son give in? Does he let go of his anger, trust in his father s love, and go in to the party? We will never know. And frankly, I really don t think were suppose to know. All we can do is decide for ourselves Sincerely, Fr. Trey Nelson Pastor
