March 31, 2019 THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT 8:00a.m. & 10:30am WHILE WE GATHER In today s Old Testament reading, notice how guilt s cold fist tightens until all Joseph s brothers realize their sin. Though more than 20 years have passed, time has not erased the debt they owe their Lord for their sins again him. Note how God uses Joseph s test to produce true repentance in the brother s hearts. Our sins will always find us out, however faraway we look for refuge. But Christ has redeemed us-bought us back from the curse of guilt and of having to keep the Law! In Christ and His Cross, we find favor with God! C: Amen. P: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. C: Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. P : That we may receive the blessing of Christ s forgiveness, let us draw near to God, confessing the brokenness of our sin and receiving the fullness of our Father s mercy. Together, we pray: 2

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P: I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity; C: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: In Holy Baptism, almighty God, our merciful Father has declared you to be His children and has gathered you into His family, the Church, in which He daily and richly forgives all your sins and the sins of all believers. This new life is yours today! As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen! P: Steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord. C: Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! (10:30am continues here) INTROIT Psalm 51:2 6; antiphon: v. 1 P: Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; C: according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. P: Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, C: and cleanse me from my sin! P: For I know my transgressions, C: and my sin is ever before me. P: Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, C: so that You may be justified in Your words and blameless in Your judgment. P: Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, C: and in sin did my mother conceive me. P: Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being, C: and You teach me wisdom in the secret heart. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. 3

P: Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; C: according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. Though we deserve only punishment, You receive us as Your children and provide for all our needs of body and soul. C: Grant that we may acknowledge Your merciful goodness, give thanks for all Your benefits, and share Your love with all those who, like us, are lost and hopeless without You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 7:37-44 Pew Bible - page 864 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventh chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner. 40 And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he answered, Say it, Teacher. 41 A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more? 43 Simon answered, The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt. And he said to him, You have judged rightly. 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE DAY: Jesus Sinners Doth Receive 1 Jesus sinners doth receive; Oh, may all this saying ponder Who in sin s delusions live And from God and heaven wander! Here is hope for all who grieve: Jesus sinners doth receive. 2 We deserve but grief and shame, Yet His words, rich grace revealing, Pardon, peace, and life proclaim; Here our ills have perfect healing. Firmly in these words believe: Jesus sinners doth receive. 4 I, a sinner, come to Thee With a penitent confession. Savior, mercy show to me; Grant for all my sins remission. Let these words my soul relieve: Jesus sinners doth receive. 5 Oh, how blest it is to know: Were as scarlet my transgression, It shall be as white as snow By Thy blood and bitter passion; For these words I now believe: Jesus sinners doth receive. THE MESSAGE OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD'S PRAYER ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 6
