PILGRIMAGE OF MERCY KNOWN AS THE PATRONESS OF PURITY, the major relics of St. Maria Goretti will make a pilgrimage to the United States from September to November of this year. In anticipation of the Holy Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis, a tour of the remains of St. Maria Goretti seemed a natural choice to promote the Holy Year. THE DECISION TO HAVE HER REMAINS TOUR THE US WAS A LOGICAL CHOICE based on a relationship that American soldiers had with the people of Nettuno, Italy dating back to World War II. The city of Nettuno, the town where St. Maria s body reposes in the Basilica bearing her name, was the site of a massive landing of US soldiers during the Second World War. Fighting with incredible bravery to liberate the area of its German occupation, the Americans not only liberated the region, the city of Rome was subsequently liberated. WITH GREAT EXCITEMENT, THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF OUR LADY OF MERCY RECEIVING HER REMAINS was made at the unveiling of our master plan. Receiving the remains in our parish is certainly the greatest of honors as Our Lady of Mercy is the only stop between Florida and Texas. We anticipate guests from all over our region to join us in public veneration. As our parish prepares for the tour, a special collection will be held on Sunday, September 13. We ask for your prayers at this time as we prepare for the Pilgrimage of Mercy. To learn more about St. Maria Goretti and for the full tour schedule, visit www.olomchurch.com. PILGRIMAGE SCHEDULE Saturday, Ocotber 31 Public Veneration of St. Maria begins following a special 12:00 noon Mass Public veneration will continue through the night into the next day in our Sanctuary Our regular weekend Masses will be celebrated as scheduled. Sunday, November 1 Public veneration of St. Maria continues from previous day A special 3:00 pm Mass will conclude our celebrations. BATON ROUGE, LA 3

SAINT OF THE WEEK St. Giles (650-710) FEAST DAY: September 1 Despite the fact that much about St. Giles is shrouded in mystery, we can say that he was one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages. Likely, he was born in the first half of the seventh century in southeastern France. That is where he built a monastery that became a popular stopping-off point for pilgrims making their way to Compostela in Spain and the Holy Land. made his popularity spread. Giles was soon invoked as the patron of the poor and the disabled. The pilgrimage center that once drew so many fell into disrepair some centuries after Giles death. Patron Saint of beggars and the disabled. Source: www.americancatholic.org In England, many ancient churches and hospitals were dedicated to Giles. One of the sections of the city of Brussels is named after him. In Germany, Giles was included among the so-called 14 Holy Helpers, a popular group of saints to whom people prayed, especially for recovery from disease and for strength at the hour of death. Also among the 14 were Sts. Christopher, Barbara and Blaise. Interestingly, Giles was the only non-martyr among them. Devotion to the Holy Helpers was especially strong in parts of Germany and in Hungary and Sweden. Such devotion 8 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
